No problem. I'm hoping to add some of the OSR backgrounds i've seen posted in the next little while. (And actually finish the whole thing so it makes real characters.)

5E seems well suited to be hacked. It seems easy to just drop parts of the game (like skills and backgrounds) and the rest of the game keeps chugging along. In software development we call that idea loose coupling. I'm also looking forward to the DMG. From the tidbits they've dropped so far it sounds like it'll be an interesting book.

I'm also partial to one long page. You should make the headings all anchors so they can be hyperlinked to. (I can / should help with that.) 400k is basically a blip for most people on the Internet now.

*Some* feats come with stat bonuses, others don't. They are presumably making a best effort to make a feat equal a +2 bonus. Presumably min-maxers will still figure out how to break the game. Does that matter? You shouldn't design a whole game around trying to stop annoying players from being annoying.

I have it. I'm reading through it now. I like it a lot so far. Patrick Stuart writes really well (as you can see from his blog). The art is by Scrap Princess. She has a very unique style. I'm not sure how to describe it that doesn't undersell what she does. I guess the video shows you what it looks like, though. The adventure is written such that you could probably just steal the NPCs, events, etc, even if you don't like all the pieces put together. Here is a random quote from a random page. (This is a random venom one of the NPCs has at their disposal. There are 5 others.) 4. Liquid Dyslexia. Lasts for d4 weeks. Can’t be healed as not a disease. Can’t be lifted as not a curse. Used on wizards. Here is an out of context quote I liked because it made me chuckle. Every 6-8 hours a f**k**g huge crab will fall out of the sky and explode on the rock. (Turns out a Roc is dropping the crabs on the ground to eat them.) I'll probably try and write a proper review for my blog when i'm done reading it.

Not sure how we ended up talking bout the RPGPundit here. Anyway, I like Vornheim. I have a review of it on my blarg. It's a very creative book. The second half—the random tables and ideas on randomly and quickly generating a city—is probably of more interest to people than the section about the city as it exists in Zak's game. I'd argue the book is worth getting if you want to learn about how to write (and layout) good random tables.

FYI that PDF is going to be updated with monsters when the monster manual is done and some DM advice when the DMG is done was the word on the street from Mike Mearls. This PDF is just the first set of things they wanted to get out of the door.

Yeah, the starter set is meant for people who have never played D&D before, as I understand things. It's an introduction to table top role playing games.
I'm looking forward to 5e. I liked the really early playtest rules, and it sounds like the "core" game is going to be those simple rules. As I understand things, the DMG includes all sorts of optional rules for people who like more complicated games. I think the PHB adds more classes to mix, etc.

There are rules like this in 5e for the fighter and the thief. (Or there were in earlier play test packets.) I think they called them "expertise dice", and you could spend them on different actions depending on your class.

I want to live in this world where things are so neat and tidy and we can put people in hero and villain buckets. Blume was probably a nuanced man, made good choices and poor choices, and lived his life as best he could. Like most people.

I'm a big fan of Pits and Perils, which has been mentioned on this board before. It's all 2d6 based. It's trying to clone the feel of OD&D, rather than the rules.

Not yet. None of the modules the LotFP kickstarter this was part of have gone to print yet. (FYI they aren't going to be on sale, I think they were just for backers.)

I ended up placing an order with B&N. Hopefully it actually ships.

I messaged Amazon customer service to see what's up. This was (part of) the response:
I'm thinking I might just buy it locally, though I regret not doing so when there were crazy boxing day sales happening here in Toronto. Or from B&N as other people above have suggested. It's currently priced very cheap (compared to the street price).

I got a tracking number from John on Monday, so my package is somewhere between him and me now. I emailed him about all my outstanding orders that morning, which might have been a little push for him to send mine out.

I'm still waiting as well, if it makes you feel better. Hah. The last word was that he expects the first Delving Deeper shipment wrapped up by the end of November. There is another thread here with that status update.

It's a shame they went with glossy paper. I don't mind the new covers at all, but matte paper is much nicer. Still, for < $20 for the hardbacks, it still seems like quite a deal. The books themselves are nicely put together as well. (Proper binding and all that. They'll probably last a good white.)

Gaming Stores have been getting them. I've seen lots of people talking about buying them locally. I am guessing the distributer amazon.com uses just hasn't got them yet.

If you look at the latest play test, there are different options for the fighter that lead to different levels of crunch in the game. So you could play something simple or complex, depending on your mood. And more importantly different players at the table could play games with different levels of crunch on their character sheet. I think the plan is to do something similar for all the classes. The skill system looks easy enough to drop completely from the game if you weren't interested in that as well.
The XP progression makes levels 1-3 about learning the game, as the characters are super-simple before level 3.
I'll add, I was actually playing a D&D Next game online (G+) with people also using characters from other D&D editions. It worked fine. Players with B/X characters had to figure out their to-hit bonus and AC. One guy was playing a Necromancer from OSR supplement, and he would say what his special powers were and the DM used the power of common sense to figure out how things would work.
*update*: Removed some snark.

I think Carcosa has a sub board because it was originally explicitly an OD&D supplement. With Isle of the Uninown that's not quite the case.

The reprint wouldn't be as much fun without confusing references to a game no one owns.
