I think using HTML or Plaintext is a much more open solution than using Word, for what it's worth. Textfiles are way more future proof at the very least.

Very cool. I'm working on something similar, Random Carcosa, that would be about generating 6-mile hexes in the same style as those found in the Carcosa text. There are lots of great ideas here.

No, that's actually the next thing I need to work on. It works by using the prime requisite to pick your class. I'd need to make it a tiny bit smarter to pick between all 6/7 classes.

It wouldn't be a gaming forum without a little pedantry!

Good catch on the Base AC. I've fixed that and the fighting-man HD calculation.
I was just being a bit facetious with my comment about war gaming and gender ratios, because the fighter was formally the Fighting MAN. Fighting Man or Fighting Women seems more evocative.

Thanks! This is exactly the sort of stuff i'm looking for. Also, Were there no women war gamers? (Actually, don't answer : I'm guessing that's a discussion that's happened a million times already.)
I'm going to guess someone here could also tell me if Mentzer and Moldvay are more or less identical at first level in terms of rules?

I wrote a random character generator. It defaults to making "Basic" D&D characters. I added support for "Little Brown Books" D&D characters, but as I'm less familiar with that system I was hoping the people here could help point out anything I might have missed. Briefly: its 3d6 in order for attributes, random equipment based on buying things with 3d6 x 10 starting gold, d6 for hit dice, no no thieves, random languages when you have high intelligence, a random spell if you're a magic user. I want to add support for Greyhawk and Holmes D&D as well. The systems are similar enough it should be easy to do. Thanks.

The fellow behind it was talking about doing another campaign himself to get it funded.

When can people who didn't order buy the game?
It seems way to difficult to give someone some money for this thing. Hah!

The second edition PDFs were pretty great. I think it's the stuff that pre-dates that which needs some love and care. I don't know if they have the energy to go through their back catalog and really clean things up, but that would be pretty great. I imagine they might release things backwards: start with 3rd and 4th edition, then move on to 2nd and and then eventually 1st and original D&D. That might give them time to fix things up. We will see, I guess.

If they release nice PDFs, that would be amazing. They didn't actually say they were releasing PDFs though, but that they were going to publish their books in an electronic format. That could mean all sorts of stupidness. Hopefully they are aware of what the RPG fan base wants, and put out nicer versions of the PDFs they had previously published.
It's stupid sitting on IP like this. They have this giant back catalog they could be selling, for what I imagine is mostly pure profit at this point.

$5.00 is pretty d**n cheap. What price do you think is fair here? That's like a Mocha Frapachino at Star Bucks.

Agreed. It felt like what you'd get if you tried to take the early rules and make them work with D20 mechanics. I'm hoping they continue to keep things simple. That seems to be the goal based on the stuff on their blog and the few interviews I've seen with Mearls.

I was hoping he'd ask my other question, which was: "Have you read any criticisms of the rape and other controversial parts of Carcosa that you felt were interesting, valid, etc. (As opposed to shrill, knee-jerk, etc.)" I guess I can just ask you that here? I loved the book, by the way. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, because gonzo scifi isn't really my thing. I have the first of what I think till be several posts about the book on my blog.
