Advanced Fighting Fantasy perhaps? It's a more involved version of the system used in the Fighting Fantasy choose your own adventure books. They are back in print now. I have the old versions from the 90s.

Yeah, I intend to use my copy as well, since I lack originals in the first place. The reprints are cheaper than beat up copies of the old books.

I'm actually on the other side of the fence. I find A5 books are much nicer to use at the table, if only because they eat up much less space. I find them easier to flip through, etc. I think the nicest rule book I own right now is the Rules and Magic book from Lamentations of the Flame Princess, which is A5. The Dungeon Crawl Classics rule book is your traditional giant text book. I basically always use the PDF on my iPad as a reference rather than the actual book. It's so unwieldy. It's nice to flip through and look at the art, but it's not actually useful as a rule book while playing.
As I understand things, the only reason TSR switched to the bigger format for their books was because they look better on bookshelves in bookstores.

It'd be cool to see a digest sized hardback, similar to how they redid the S and A series in hardback. I don't see it happening, though. I think they'd have done that from the get go if that was their intention. I'm also not sure they'll continue producing these sorts of things once D&D 5e is out.

I've played it a few times now. I like it. I think it'll be good for new players. It's much more straight forward to explain than any of the earlier versions of the game, I'd say. (And you can ignore some of the extra bits, like feats, to keep things even simpler.)

I've always read the title the same way as Falconer as well.
I'm looking forward to this finally coming out. I don't mind the new covers. (Though I like the original M&M cover a lot as well.)

Hey John, do you know the status of my order? As I've mentioned earlier, I am waiting for X-Plorers, a gaming box, and the Kickstarter modules as well. I figured I was doing you a favour by asking it all ship together, but had I known it'd take this long I'd probably have had you ship X-Plorers and the Gaming Box right away. I mean, I paid for shipping when I bought them on your stuff.

I like Delving Deeper the best. It seems to working hardest to stay as close as possible to the OD&D rules, and it's presentation also mirrors the original rule books.

For some reason I thought the release date was updated to December on Wizard's website too, but it's still listed as November there. Maybe Amazon is being crazy. Wouldn't be the first time.

Epic.
If you browse the board you'll see that the box set was announced as being ready to print/bind/ship November of last year, and in December of last year he still thought they'd make it out by Christmas.

I suspect people who want a print edition OD&D are going to pay for this even if they have pirated copies of the game. I put an order in when they were announced, and I have the PDFs. Copies of the original boxed set are basically priced out of anyones reach if you aren't a collector of this stuff. (Never mind it's hard to find a copy of those books in excellent condition.)
I'd also set aside stuff they did in 2009. Clearly they are moving in a new direction. They are re-scanning and publishing PDFs on dndclassics.com.

Has there been lots of wailing about piracy and copyright? I haven't heard anything about that from them in recently.
Do you think people are going to pirate the books now that they have to wait an extra month for them?

I emailed you about Delving Deeper on August 27th, and didn't get a reply. I am waiting for X-Plorers, a gaming box, and the Kickstarter modules as well.

The book is also full of laser guns and alien power armor, so there is a little bit of everything for everyone.

To be clear, I really like Delving Deeper. I think it's really well done, and I recommend it to people all the time. The hardcover version being put together sounds really great, and I plan to pick that up as well. I'm not just not sure i'd have bought this boxed set knowing what I know now. (Even putting it being so late aside.) I ended up printing up my own booklets at home using the no-art PDFs, which I quite like. In hindsight that probably would have been good enough for me.
And it's true I want the OD&D books to read more than use in play. In the OD&D game I play in now I find myself using a players reference PDF because its more neatly organized than Men and Magic. Delving Deeper is also handy in that regard.

I've also ordered the OD&D reprints. I ordered Delving Deeper a little bit over a year ago, now. I think if I had known they were on the horizon and that this would ship so late i'd have skipped my order in the first place.

Agreed. You shouldn't kill yourself trying to mail these things out! I don't think anyone wants that. That said, you're very good at over promising and under delivering. You want to switch that around.

I actually have a blog post about all of this that i've been sitting on, because it's hard to discuss this project and it being late without sounding like an not a very nice person. We are working very hard to make sure every remaining boxed set arrives at it's new home before the end of August so that I can ship the remaining DD materials in September. This line here is the what I think is has been your biggest issue with this project. You've done a poor job managing peoples expectations for the delivery of the project, and continue to do so. We've been told the project has been a couple months away from completely shipping since November. No one is setting unrealistic deadlines for you besides yourself. If it's going to take you 4 more months or 8 more months, you should just say so. I would add the following: you know how long it takes to make a box, and you hopefully know how long they take to leave your hands and end up at the post office. You should probably just have a running tally somewhere of how many boxes are outstanding, and just chart how long they should take to move. Then you could track your progress against that estimate, and both you and your customers could see how things are going. In software we call that a burndown chart. Good luck! I'm still really looking forward to my boxed set, x-plorers, a gaming box, and the DCC RPG adventures as well. I'm sure they'll all be great.

Are UPS or FedEx really much better? Here in Canada I hate getting packages from either, since they charge crazy brokerage fees. Purolator is the worst, because they charge fees and never actually deliver the package, which is kind of their job. I've been home and walked outside to find a note saying, "we tried to deliver your package, come pick up it up at the depot." Liars! CanadaPost is better for most things, and since they handle packages from USPS, I like USPS the most by proxy.
