Okay, I've given my free module series a lot of thought and reached some conclusions. In light of this rethinking, I've decided to edit my existing module Something Rotten in Riverton to be fully compatible with the OD&D rules set. What, pray tell, would actually be different? (other than the nomenclature?)

The "Chainmail-ish" changes to DD are essentially minutia in light of a Chainmail/OD&D based FRPG such as Vey's S&S. DD still exclusively uses the 1:1 "alternate combat system" from the 3lbb's for it's core combat mechanic. I don't see that giving the fighter class few tweaks and some clarifications on dwarfs and halflings really even warrants a "Chainmailish" descriptor. At least no more that 3lbb OD&D, IMHO. :-)

What does this mean, version B? Is this an alternate chainmailish flavor of DD....? As Simon has already answered, no, but.... I'm working on something "unofficial" in this vein. Parallel to that, I'm also working on a "Book of War" mass-troop option tentatively with the BOW author's assistance, that has the potential to become both OGL and "official" for DD. Playtesting both now. The process is slow as I work full-time as a consultant and am teaching 3 courses as an adjunct. So no promises or time-lines! Meanwhile, you can purchase Daniel Collins' Original Delta's Book of War on Lulu.com in both hardback and PDF and enjoy it yourself. I'd encourage you to do so! The CM one is trickier, but is more a labor of love than anything. I'll be using only the "normal" or "troop" combat system from CM. (Not man-to-man or Fantasy combat tables). Some elements will be deliberately changed and simplified, but the end result will be to add, as you stated, a "Chainmailish flavor" to DD as an alternative combat option. It will be playing DD like I run OD&D with CM. Modified and simplified for quick combat resolution, minimal accounting, and optimal play. (I always have kids in mind when I run games) For those Chainmail purists that want to run it by the little blue book... go play Chainmail. :-) That's what I do!

But how does the number figure into that? "Lair nearby" is a column heading on a chart that lists numbers (most seem to be between 1 and 100, but none have percent signs) for each monster type. Is that the chance that there's a lair nearby? Is it the distance to the nearest lair? Is it something else entirely? I believe it is the % chance that the den is nearby. (in random encounters)

Simon, this is exactly what I needed to get our little "Fathers & Sons" gaming publishing efforts off the ground! Incentives and a deadline!
Will you be posting this announcement to the DD Google+ community? I was going to do it but figured that was your prerogative, not mine. :-) I have all the OD&D stuff already, but that T&T box and Arduin stuff sure sounds yummy!
We'll be submitting at least one or more! (My goal would be 3)

Thanks for the encouragement. I will certainly post here what I develop, hoping its not biting off more than I can chew! The key is to to simply not over-complicate things. Do some quick conversions, and then just roll with it. If something comes up that you're not sure how to handle.... fudge it. Keep the story going, keep it simple, and everyone will have a blast, pardner!

I have one in my like-new 2nd edition box that I bought re-bought a year or so ago. Sorry, it'd take a bout with raging insanity to get me to part with it. :-P Here's WaynesBooks, a site I've found has a lot of great stuff that he sells on Amazon. I think that's where I got mine. Can I just say that these kinds of posts are why I totally LOVE this forum? Does anyone know if Fedex/Kinkos can print images this size on paper? Usually, yes, but it's not cheap! I was going to reprint some old Star Frontiers maps and laminate them. Might be cheaper looking on eBay.

You guys do realize, don't you, that the more you speculate, the less like D&D, as played or as written, your speculations become? Sometimes great things can arise from asking "what if"? Personally, the usual way of running combat works fine for my campaign, both back in 1975 and nowadays. I still enjoy mental exercises such as this one. Yeah, I'd say that both of these statements pretty much fit me. I run games pretty loosely with a lot of fluidity of mechanics, but yet, the geek in me, likes to peek at the tweakings that underpin the system.

Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth is our current campaign. I was a bit underwhelmed with the nexus/teleport encounters of the original module and decided to modify them a bit. The penultimate teleportation will send the PC's to the American Old West, arriving somewhere near Promise City, adventuring there for a while, then returning. Still working on all the details. Bravo! Exalt! I look forward to hearing how it goes!

I guess I really shouldn't have put Retro-Clone in the title. Of course when I put house-rules I just got a "don't even bother" response. LOL, that's probably sad but true. Nothing sparks the OSR interest than the "Retro-X" nomenclature! Thanks for posting anyway! I look forward to seeing some of your offerings someday, somewhere. Cheers.

I would do the following: 1, Drink until I forget that I want to write a retroclone. 2, Write down all the cool stuff that would have made it different as a Supplement. I confess, that's pretty much what I've been doing with my spare time. :-) The only phrase I'd add is "Write down all the cool stuff that would have made it different for somebody else's Supplement. :-D

For the record, it's worthwhile restating that the minor differences observed in the numbers and tables are necessary for legal reasons. I might also clarify that Delving Deeper is an SRD-based fantasy role-playing game that emulates the original rules. The original rules do not reside exclusively in the 3LBBs; they are also resident in Chainmail, Outdoor Survival, and other contemporary commentary including The Strategic Review and The Great Plains Game Players Newsletter. Delving Deeper acknowledges that the original rules were still in active developed for a number of years after the 3LBBs appeared, and brings it all together for you in one place. That right there was one of the best and most lucid descriptions of DD that I've read thus far. At least for those of us that understand the various historical references that you make. I need to keep this! Cheers!

Yes we all have greater or lesser compilations of house-rules with varying degrees of separation from one edition or another. While it may be fun to formalize your efforts and publish it, I've thought of it many times, it seems to be more helpful to the community to simply create options as we've already mentioned to existing bodies of work. Perhaps even supporting more than one in the process. Few of our currently well-known "clones" depart that much from either the original or from those that emulate it. Do the work once, tweak it a few times, and give the community more options than they could shake a clone at.
Simon, I'd propose that a Delving Deeper community driven supplement compiled, checked against the SRD/OGL, would be best produced by you and/or others as an "official" Immersive Ink supplement.
Currently, I'm working on the reference sheets/DM screen, minus any artwork, also an additonal class/race or two, and some mass battle or "original wargame" options. ...oh yeah, I forgot some of the non-thief "Greyhawk" combat options I've been exploring. If I ever get back to working only one full-time job instead of two, you'll soon start seeing more than hints about it. :-)

To me: Old School = Booklet :-)
I look forward to reading it, and integrating some of it into our OD&D/Delving Deeper campaign!

In this post (Feb 6, 2009), just one month before he passed, Dave Arneson wrote: PDF away. But be warned you will ALL owe me a large lattes at GENCON. Dave Arneson gave us so many firsts: the first rpg, the first campaign setting (blackmoor), and the first scenario (temple of the frog). Therefore, what about toasting Dave with large lattes on the first day of GENCON, no matter where we are? This year (2013), the first day of GENCON is August 15th. That's 6 months off, but I'm proposing this idea now, hoping it will gain steam (pun intended) before GENCON. There have already been other memorials such as the Dave Arneson memorial gamedays in Manhattan and Minneapolis. This proposal is just another, simple way to memorialize Dave that anyone could do without having to attend a gameday or convention. We ALL owe Dave large lattes!A capital idea! I'm raising my "latte" now! (although it's just sumatra mandahling with skim milk) To Dave! (not.."to blave!)

People easily shell out $50-$200 for many regular board games these days. Cardboard and plastic. I'm really not sure the fuss over a $150.00 box set that's likely limited in its audience.

No Chainmail and/or Swords & Spells. That does kinda suck, but wow, that production value looks amazing! Well worth the $150 they're asking. I'll be ordering a set, just like I've bought all the other reprints. I agree with all of these statements. ;D
