Having trouble figuring out how to convert AD&D stats to Boot Hill ones. Can anyone lend a hand into explaining converting AD&D DEX into BH Speed and some of the other abilities? Any help appreciated, thanks.

Have you looked at the "Sixguns & Sorcery" section in AD&D DMG pp. 112-113? It's written specifically to your question.

Yes, I have.
Its the conversion from Dex to Speed that doesn't seem to jive with me. As I read it and as an example, an AD&D PC with 18 Dexterity converts to "= % score". Looking at the Boot Hill Speed chart, this would be 18% Average +0. Is this correct?

That's how I read it, yes. In both First and Second Edition Boot Hill, 18% translates as "Average" speed. That isn't too bad for a Fighter or Magic-User confronted with new technology.

That makes sense now that I think on it. And especially since Speed does go up with experience.
Thanks for the replies, Cameron. I appreciate it.

If I may ask, what exactly are you doing with AD&D + Boot Hill?
I'm inferring you're moving FRPG characters into an Old West style milieu? Or are you looking to import gunpowder weapons into a fantasy campaign? Or something else? Just curious.

Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth is our current campaign. I was a bit underwhelmed with the nexus/teleport encounters of the original module and decided to modify them a bit. The penultimate teleportation will send the PC's to the American Old West, arriving somewhere near Promise City, adventuring there for a while, then returning. Still working on all the details.

That sounds like a lot of fun. Again, let us know how that works out in play.

Thanks for the encouragement. I will certainly post here what I develop, hoping its not biting off more than I can chew! The key is to to simply not over-complicate things. Do some quick conversions, and then just roll with it. If something comes up that you're not sure how to handle.... fudge it. Keep the story going, keep it simple, and everyone will have a blast, pardner!

When I did AD&D to BH. I converted Dex to % by multiplying the Ad&d score by 5.

When I did AD&D to BH. I converted Dex to % by multiplying the Ad&d score by 5. I thought of that too but decided to go with what Cameron said up above. Namely that when confronted with the new tech, Boot Hill "Average" Speed for even high Dex PC's makes sense to me. Once they get a few gunfights under their belt (should that befall them ;D) their Speed does go up so not too worried the higher Dex PC's will be at too much a disadvantage. One thing I am looking at is determining the effect of certain magic items that they will most likely be able to still use- Bracers of Defense AC 4 and a Ring of Protection +1. My first thought is that when rolling for wound severity for PC's with the above items, subtract -5% per AC bonus, i.e. -60% for the bracers and -5% for the RoP+1. Thoughts?
