I'm sorry if this has already been addressed, but I'm not sure what "Lair Nearby" indicates in the Monster and Treasure Reference. Can somebody clear this up for me? Thanks in advance.

I've always taken it to mean that the monster had some kind of den nearby that the players could plunder. Though, I would only reference it if they actually went looking (instead of just announcing it). It's the difference between a roving band of orcs running into you vs. catching them near their camp (which might have extra goodies or dangers).
Think of it like the trolls in The Hobbit. They had a lair nearby.

But how does the number figure into that? "Lair nearby" is a column heading on a chart that lists numbers (most seem to be between 1 and 100, but none have percent signs) for each monster type. Is that the chance that there's a lair nearby? Is it the distance to the nearest lair? Is it something else entirely?

Also, is there supposed to be a D (damage) column on this chart?

Damage is d6. Any exceptions are noted in the descriptions.

Yes, the "Lair Nearby" is the percentage chance that monsters encountered are from a nearby lair. Yes, the upcoming errata sheet and version b will have that spelled out explicitly. Thanks Zeraser

Thank you. I figured the damage thing out on my own shortly after posting.
