I did the survey (I love surveys). Under sexual orientation, "pansexual" should be folded under bisexual and you're missing asexual. I chose "Human" as my ethnicity.

As an intelligent person with excellent grasp of English grammar, I agree 100% with Stormcrow. The rules were terrific in concept, horrid in "writer's comprehension". Blaring that it's the reader's fault may explain why nobody would admit to not understanding at first. I don't know of anybody who want's to look like an idiot and playing games should not be exclusive only to those with college degrees in "how to read a minus sign as a simple division". Same goes double for OD&D's loose patchwork of unexplained concepts and odd typography that could be read in multiple different ways. Reminds me of the joke about whether you pronounce it data or data

On Mighty Thews is a great game for Sword & Sorcery action. Especially adventures emulating the short stories of yesteryear as opposed to the cheesy 80s films. Very primal, visceral stuff. I LOVE Barbarians of Lemuria, but even that game needs a slight amount of prep work by the GM. OMT is pretty much an group exercise in creative improvisation. Everyone chips in to create a pulpy story and the GM is only there to spur on the action, take the roles of NPCs and keep things moving. I'm hoping to try playing some soon, but the whole "flying by the seat of your imagination" thing can be scary if you get writer's block easily.

I got a couple OCE boxes for about $60 each from eBay years ago. Since then I've sold one, kept one to look through here and there, and otherwise use various compilations or "single-volume" copies from Lulu or such. Here's a pic of my current OD&D collection (not including reprints, etc.):

The color of those d6s is deceptive. Some people's eyes see it as orange, some see it as red. The lighting can change the way it appears, particularly in photos, which I think has contributed to the confusion. That is an interesting thought, and one that I hadn't heard before. To me, my d6's are clearly orange but I often wonder about how we classify colors and what other people see. (For example, school busses are to me clearly yellow, but I've had folks tell me they are a shade of orange.) Anyway, I see orange and so I bought orange for my Chessex dice when I replicated my original sets. (I like the Chesses ones a lot better than the Gamescience dice. I bought sets of both.) Agreed. I've actually seen pics of original d6 dice that looked more "orangy" than the red I have.

Just like to point out that "fan" is short for fanatic and a real Star Wars fan WILL watch AND enjoy everything that comes out for Star Wars. So to all the fakers and haters claiming that Star Wars has been ruined: You obviously aren't fanatics. In short, if you hate on anything Star Wars, for any reason, just admit you're not a fan and move on, so the rest of us can enjoy our fiction

gemini476, I don't know. Probably max HP per character. Also, I just want NPCs to die faster. If they can't save their retainer in an hour, well, hire another retainer. murquhart72, the point is that I am trying to find a way to make the spell "neutralize poison" make some kind of sense. If you just die immediately. What is the good of it? Also, for "realism," some poisons take longer than others to kill you. Last time I used this it also added some suspense, which is always fun. How about if the hit point loss comes at maybe 1 point per round or 1 per turn? That way someone is half dead within minutes, but still alive from making their save, but a fail means they will die in time, unless someone can act fast.

I always figured if you got poisoned, it took away all your hit points. Unless you made your save, then you only lose half your hit points (likely getting violently ill).

That all sounds pretty much like what I've seen and/or done myself over the years. The time of day being an exception; Holy poops that seems like a late time to be gaming! I hate having to get up so early for work sometimes. I remember one weird session that ran nearly 24 hours once. It got a little silly towards the end o.O

I think a lot of people would benefit with the insight answers could give. But the folks that were there "back in the day" never seem to want to talk about stuff like that. At least, not without insulting the questioners intelligence or reading comprehension. I even got barked at by Gary once for asking about stuff that "doesn't even matter anyway".

I feel like Gronan needs to toss in one of his "reading comprehension" insults here. Comes into to play when words typed out with one intent can be read as is, to get an entirely different meaning via a different point of view. It's interesting how many different interpretations you can find in just a few sentences.

And yes I am thinking of ordering a set of uglies for the retro feel. My advice: One set, pre-inked, just for kicks. The bags aren't that great.

My stuff just came in! EDIT: I'm thinking now I should've splurged and had them inked. Oh well. Side note to Piper: the original six-sided were red, the orange in my picture earlier was due to poor lighting. Maybe I'll add pics of those dice another time.

Boy I tell you what; If they would just make a set like this available, I'd buy TONS of 'em! But I can never find them in the right colors or with the right inking. Pictured are the originals on the left (of which I have a few sets of, thanks to Noble Knight Games) and what appear to be the Gamescience equivalent on the right:

Llauranela. Ugh. Ok, so this all makes much more sense. I've had my own unfortunate run-ins with "Llauranela" on other boards. I'm a glutton for punishment and I enjoy a good challenge so that's all on me. At least I now know what all the hullabaloo is about. And FTR, I love this place and I find any debate here to be overall courteous and respectful. Opinions differ, but I've yet to see things ever become personal or vindictive. Without this board, my knowledge and understanding of OD&D would basically be nil. I have only the vaguest memory/sense of Llaurenela, other than some very entertaining posts that kept me glued to the edge of my seat. Sometimes drama is fun to watch. Just not if it's really disrupting the real reason we all come here.

I think Gamescience dice are more for collectors or as curiosities than regular play for the most part. Chessex is by far more popular at most gaming tables. I wrote back to see if I could get a tracking number, but who knows. I ordered on the 5th, I'll try to remember to post here when they arrive and what exactly I got.

I used to have Gamescience dice and thought they were great and kind of "old-school" (at least in an 80's way). Your post inspired me to check out the links and within minutes I ended up ordering 4 sets of "Ugly Starter Dice" (un-inked, I'm not MADE of money) and a lil' green bag to put 'em in

In my OD&D games, small dragons are man-sized or just over, medium dragons are a little bigger than a horse, and large dragons are elephant size or maybe bigger. I go with medieval scenes I've seen illustrated or painted.

So a few mercenaries to provide "back up" are good. But a whole slew mean they're just going to wipe out wanderers and take the PCs gold. This is an interesting, but logical tactic I've never thought of before

My view has always been: Want to classify your dude? Well, if you use magic, you're a Magic-User; If not, you're just a Fighting-Man. This always led me to question just what the hell a "Cleric" was. Vampire slaying mega-knight? IDK. And thief? Well, aren't they all just stealing stuff while trying to avoid confrontation?
