Ben (of Questing Beast) and I (Brendan/ Necropraxis) have created a survey exploring the meaning people attach to OSR. You can take the survey here: b.link/osrFeel free to share this link with anyone you think may be interested.

I don't appreciate it when people try to establish a relationship between my gaming preferences and my ethnicity, sexual orientation or political outlook. So I stopped the survey at that point. This kind of stuff only breeds division between OSR people.

The point is to provide some sense of how to generalize the results, not to criticize any group. For example, if respondents skew older, we shouldn’t assume the results say as much about younger players. And so forth.
If we limit the discussion of generalizability to age, geography, and gender would that address your concerns? (Re: geography I think it’s useful to be able to say how representative the results are of people outside the USA.)
(Copying a lightly edited version of a comment from another conversation.)

Brendan---
How long will the survey remain open?
Also, do you have plans to share the raw data in addition to the summary of the results?
Allan.

I plan to close the survey on Friday.
Ben and I have access to the raw data. I have no plans to share the data further, as I did not ask participants for permission to do so.
If you think the data could speak to particular questions that you have, let me know and I can look into it.
Given the high level of participation (more than 1500 completed responses at the time of this comment with more than 1300 answering yes to the question "Do you participate in the OSR?"), I will likely put out a general request for comments regarding how we administered the survey and what people would like to see in the future.

On some of the questions I'm not sure what you are asking. Particularly the "diverse voices" one. Do you mean the voices of diverse people or voices that are diverse? Because I'd agree on one and Strongly Disagree on another.

Because I'd agree on one and Strongly Disagree on another. You can answer the questions to the best of your ability, based on your interpretation of how the question is written. If you feel like you cannot give a meaningful answer based on how a question is written, you can leave it blank and your response will show as a missing value for that question, meaning your answer will not contribute to aggregate results (but just for the questions you leave blank; your responses will contribute for all the questions you answer).

What is the reason that you’re conducting this survey?

I included some suggestions in the feedback at the end of the survey. Feel free to reach out if you want to discuss them further. Allan.

I did the survey (I love surveys). Under sexual orientation, "pansexual" should be folded under bisexual and you're missing asexual. I chose "Human" as my ethnicity.

Can I ask why you chose qualtrics for the survey?

What is the reason that you’re conducting this survey? Primary purposes: - To understand the degree to which there is consensus around the meaning of OSR.
- To see if the attached meaning differs between people that consider themselves participants in OSR, whatever that may be, and people that consider themselves non-participants.
- To compare how people see OSR right now and what people would prefer OSR to mean.
Secondary purposes: - To explore at the content level what people consider to be OSR (games, rules approaches, etc).
- To see what the geographical distribution of OSR participants is (at the crudest level, US versus non-US, but also at a finer resolution).
- To see what people's favorite products are that they consider OSR.
- To see whether people who consider themselves to be OSR participants play mostly OSR games (as determined by these ratings) or other games.
Further questions may occur to me as I look at the data, but that is what I set out to do when I built the survey.

Under sexual orientation, "pansexual" should be folded under bisexual and you're missing asexual. Yeah, I agree; in retrospect I would have liked to include an asexual option. That was an oversight. For pansexual, I know some pansexuals do not consider pansexuality to be a strict subset of bisexuality, and I want to give people the options they prefer to use for expressing their beliefs rather than imposing my own categories, to the degree that is possible given my own limited knowledge and the constraints of survey length. (This is one of the reasons why I will be ignoring the political orientation responses, because many people let me know that they did not feel able to express their beliefs well using the options provided.)
Also, thanks for participating!

The point is to provide some sense of how to generalize the results, not to criticize any group. For example, if respondents skew older, we shouldn’t assume the results say as much about younger players. And so forth. In other words: if the respondents turn out to be 90% Gay and 90% liberal, but another survey (or just a hunch) suggests the general RPG or OSR audience isn't 90% Gay and 90% liberal, it suggests that the survey is biased and either needs to be corrected for or redone. But you might want to answer the question Necropraxis asked after your previous question: If we limit the discussion of generalizability to age, geography, and gender would that address your concerns? (Re: geography I think it’s useful to be able to say how representative the results are of people outside the USA.)
