While it has some endearment, I've never truly been satisfied with the name, Dungeons & Dragons.
I find that the term dungeon, and the initial idea of a dungeon exploration game, sounds limited/ing. And the idea of battling dragon after dragon after...well. There are scores more of monsters of equal or more interesting characteristics than dragons.
So, if it had been you, back in 1972-3-4, sitting around and concocting this fantasy-amalgam of a game, what name do you think you would have drumpt up?

"Heroes & Magic" seems like a logical choice. "Monsters & Magic" could work for alliteration purposes. Either of those would attract 10-year-old past me to the game.

every choice you could make, someone can use the same argument.
"Aventures and Monsters". oh, so now i can fight only monsters? and i cant just manage my stuff, and have to go on a adventure?
I think D&D is a very nice name, and represent something

"Pointing and Laughing"? I think D&D is a fine enough name, although foxroe's "Swords & Sorcery" would perhaps be more accurate. For something really broad, "Fantastic Adventures" would work, or "Fantastic Realms" if you are super-worried about people who feel limited by the word "adventure". Although seriously, why are we worried about people who think "if it doesn't mention X, we can't do it"? Weren't they a major part of the problem with the development of D&D?

Not really.
Frankly, I've seen some silly threads in my life, but this one is near the top.

I already think of it this way. It's like Balderdash is really the Dictionary Game (originally).

Ahhh, I think I see the problem with my query. The first part is so opinionated, biased; and just plain brain gas. So, let's strike that.
And, then, consider the second part: And, to make things perfectly clear, I would like to ask Mr. Mornard, to please describe as best he can remember, how the name Dungeons & Dragons was actually so intellectually determined. Just in case there is 1, or 2 guests or members that are not familiar with the story.

Dungeons & Dragons fits so well, I couldn't imagine it being called anything else.
That being said, I really like the names of the three booklets as alternatives to D&D..
"Men & Magic" "Monsters & Treasure" "Underworld & Wilderness Adventures" would be cool. That would probably be my pick.

Well said, Smubee. The booklet titles are all so appropriate for D&D that I would not be surprised if they were the second through fourth choices.

One of Gary's daughters, either 11 year old Elise or 8 year old Heidi, came up with the name after Gary asked them what they thought the game should be called.
Wikipedia says it was two year old Cindy.
I've heard all three versions, but the truth is in any case "Dungeons & Dragons" was chosen by a preadolescent girl.

Dungeons & Dragons is a very, very good name that I strongly doubt could ever be topped. The strong alliteration (there are four “D” sounds total, but especially strong ones at the beginning of both stressed syllables) and the Elegiac couplet make it a pleasure to say. Furthermore, the words themselves are very attractive on the page, and lend themselves to striking logos. Finally, in paints in stark and thrilling imagery a vignette that sings to the very soul of fantasy.
