I don't see how one could make sense of OD&D except as science fantasy, because that's where so many of its core elements come from (psionics, planar travel, teleportation, X-ray vision, golems, blobs, etc.) My White Sandbox campaign has gotten a boost in this regard because the players have started exploring the Anomalous Subsurface Environment module, but previously we've had: - an Ages of Creation setting metaphor that assumes that the gods periodically try to reset the world and hide the flaws in their handiwork that have become evident by burying them in a cataclysm; digging down far enough gets you to the past ages, and the survivors thereof who are crawling out; this allows lots of Dying Sun/New Sun vast vistas of time in a D&D dungeon-level metaphor - a player who created a robot cleric named 23 who worships the Server, a massive computer deep beneath the earth, and has the AD&D monster manuals in his internal database so that when his player wants to use meta-knowledge he says "accessing storage..." - a player who created Adom Firstborn, an intelligent gorilla with an intelligent carbine I adjucate like one of the Culture weapons from Iain Banks' novels that is deeply confused by the local nature of reality and infrequently manages to operate as more than a crossbow - a magic-item seller who is one of a series of internally feuding clones and operates a planar trading empire by teaching potential customers a rhyme, using ethereal telepathic servants to scan for minds reciting that rhyme, and sending plane-travelling shadows to negotiate with these customers - a lich automaton-maker in the Nameless City of Limbo who built the platinum robot liger that was crushed beneath the heel of an allosaur held in a stasis field in the Caverns of Thracia, as well as the robot cat Q-T that is still the familiar of the illusionist Obscura Hah! I love these! Exalt!

I remember my first set of "high impact" poly dice from the late 1970's or so. My sister gave them to me and I still own them and the cloth bag they came in. The d20 was numbered 0-9 twice instead of 1-20, so when I wanted to roll a d20 I had to either use a "control die" or my old soft-plastic one. ...or we would "ink" half of the faces (0-9) in one color, and the other 0-9 faces in another color. One color meant straight 0-9, and the other color meant 11-20.

That sounds a little like handing the players only fights they can win. That's assuming that the PC party is always at full strength. I believe that the intent of wandering monsters is to serve as a resource sink, and to keep the player's from becoming too complacent in the dungeon.

Geez Louise! I've used that feature so many darn times searching other sites, but it never occured to me to use it on pro-boards. I absolutely hate it when pro-boards ignores search terms that it considers "common"! Exalt! ;D

As in the other thread, excellent sheet, Aplus! I like sheets that can be printed out landscape and folded in half. They make for convenient original-box-sized sheets, and one can also shove adventure scraps and maps into the formed "folder"... provided your character survives, of course. Quick question: You have "Luck" listed under the six attributes on your sheet. How does that work IYG?

Does The Rogues Gallery have premade spell lists? It only provides maximum spell level for random NPC classes, but it does provide spell/psionic ability lists for Couatl, Ki-rin, Shedu, and Liches.

I'm sure a few people can relate. Even when BS does make its way to these boards, we can do our part by not feeding into it. As a member here I feel like that's sort of my responsibility - to engage in the good discussions and give positive feedback, and just stay away from the negative stuff. Let that stuff die of starvation or make its way to some other board where people will happily feed into it. Yes...this.

Hmmm. I'd do it shorter... with bunnies. ;D I'm with Falconer on this one. I just couldn't see it working in two hours. It would have to be an epic HBO series or some such, and it would need the meeting with Bombadil, and Saruman's retreat to the Shire.

What did you say? No Smite? I have reluctantly given out three exalts so far on the assumption that I had three smites tucked away to use on Christmas Day. The universe is no longer in balance. I have enthusiastically given out over 200 Exalts, YMMV. ;D I love an out of balance universe! Excellent! Exalt!

Interesting. The players have always made the rolls wherever I've played; however, what's the big deal? If the rolls are in the open, statistically speaking, there is no difference that depends on the roller. The only thing that the players are missing is the "thrill" of rolling 3d6...

One thing I like here is we are encouraged to do thread necromancy. That way we don't get people slapping our hands for thread necromancy, or people continually starting new threads on the same topic and exasperating people. Allowing thread necromancy helps keep things civil! Dude! What were you thinking!! This thread was over 30 minutes dead! Necromancer!!! ;D

tl;dr - I like Moorcock... guess I'm a leper. Can't touch this.
Tekumel (EotPT style) for sure, but I wouldn't mind exploring Carcosa as well.

However, the forum CotI is where the grognards (and esp. the Mods) are heel-clicking, goose-stepping Brownshirts and where advocating something else than the RAW/BtB approach can get a person perma-banned. My very first day there I was banned. I think a few months later I was given a second ban for contradicting one of the posters who happened to be one of the the Mods. I still post there occasionally, but I'm very wary to post any ideas which are remotely creative or innovative for fear that my third ban will be permanent. There was another poster there who was well known for posting *fantastic*, imaginative interpretations of the rules which inspired and excited me to play the game. However, because he was advocating something not strictly in the books, something which did not harmonise with the official Traveller campaign universe, he was banned too. Shame that. Holy Bovine Batman, are you serious!? What did you say? I've never encountered problems at CotI. I've always felt perfectly comfortable discussing the original edition there. I'm assuming you are referring to CT discussion at CotI, BTW. I never prolifically participated in discussion of later editions there.

KKA is too insular. It is one of those public bars in a hick town that feels like a private sitting room. The moderating core turn up their noses at new members with innovative ideas who can write well. There are many interesting folks who have made very few posts there and moved on. You dare not contradict anyone posing as an expert there. I respectfully disagree. As a long-time lurker/member at the Alehouse (and I am not alone on this board in that respect), it's a great place to hang out and discuss 1ed AD&D (and we also have a fondness for OD&D there as well)! Also, I've noted that there seems to be an uptick in membership lately, so it can't be all that bad. From day #1, folks have complimented each other and reminded each other to be nice. The "exalt" function helps this and overall once you start the right attitude then newcomers tend to follow it as well. Don't underestimate this function. I think it's something that defintiely helps define the atmosphere around here! Whether someone has posted once, or a 1000 times, if that person has something to add/contribute, then what better way of showing your appreciation?

Hey!! What are you trying to say!!!? Just kiddin'. ;D There's definitely a pleasant, civilized atmosphere around here. I think a lot of it has to do with the subject material; OD&D is long departed from the "edition warz" and likely has a smaller fan base than other editions, so it's no wonder folks are more openly accepting here. Less rats in the cage.

I know that Bargle over at the K&K Alehouse mentioned this in a thread about NPC wealth, but I'm not sure where he got the figure from (it actually makes perfect sense in this context). I checked the 1ed DMG and the three LBB's and couldn't find it anywhere. Dragon/Strat Review perhaps?

I'm a cantankerous, old Holmes/AD&D player, so I'm used to (and like) the multiple/wacky saving throw categories. But, I understand that some folks are turned off by the "single save" (with bonuses for different conditions), but certainly the single throw method has it's merits, namely being easier for DM's. However, just to point it out (again) to those who still fold their arms, squeeze their eyes shut, and vigorously shake their heads side-to-side, ALL OF THE LATEST ITERATIONS OF S&W HAVE THE HISTORICAL MULTI-CATEGORY SAVE TABLE INCLUDED AS AN OPTION. So this is really no longer an excuse for not liking S&W.
