You'd have to compare them side by side to see all of the very small differences, but most of what you would expect from an AD&D "clone" is there. The big differences off the top of my head: - No Monk or Bard - No psionics - XP progressions are slightly different (for legal reasons I suppose) - Does use exceptional strength for Fighters (but stops at 18/99) - Includes optional rules for weapon specialization (as in UA) - No weapon speed factors or modifiers vs. armor I'm sure there are a ton of other differences, but they are so very, very minor. EDIT: Here's the link that SMKSensei mentions above: OSRIC Player's Guide

...and at GenCon '11 he has already said something concerning old versions (although using murky words). That's the second time I've heard that. Is there a link to this info somewhere?

I'm sure WotC will deny it, but it's as obvious to everyone as horns and giant bat wings on a newborn baby.

However, OD&D dragons are not like in later editions. If a dragon is encountered randomly, HD/age is normally determined randomly. PC's may face a tiny, relatively harmless "newt", or they may stumble upon a huge elder on the hunt for large sources of meat and treasure. Smart PC's assume the worst case and avoid the dragon, biding their time and planning their foray, if they feel they should assault it. Foolish PC's think that the DM has designed a dragon encounter tailored to their needs. After all, the game is called "Dungeons and DRAGONS", not "Dungeons and Easy-XP". Just sayin'.

The implications of this are straightforward, but may be unsettling to players used to the "open frontier" of D&D. I see this as an impetus that would drive the player characters to want to explore Jakalla's (or any other city's) underworld as a way of escaping the normal oppressions of society on Tekumel.

Very cool, Morandir! While some would say that the actions of the party were bordering on foolhardy, I like the way you handled it as DM. Dragons aren't dumb party-fodder. I imagine that dragon is slowly plotting its revenge.

Something else that I find interesting about 0ed dragons (considering your point, Geoffrey) is their treatment in Vol.III. If you look at the Monster Determination matrix on pgs.10-11, dragons don't begin to show up until the third dungeon level. On the Wilderness tables (pg.18) they have a 1 in 6* (and sometimes better) chance of showing up during anything but a city encounter. So in both of these cases, do you determine HD/age randomly, or do you scale the dragon according to the party, or do you base it on “dungeon level”? Great thread idea, BTW! This is a subject worthy of discussing to death. *Not considering lost vs. encounter chances, BTW.

I believe that (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong ) the two adventures are straight reproductions of modules, while the Selections are a collection of articles. I have the Pettigrew Selections and I highly recommend it. The selected articles are fantastic.

I'm sure that I am not alone when I say this. I love the game and I love the hobby. I'm not looking to make money off of it.
I would be willing to rescan/publish/whatever the OOP editions for WotC FOR FREE, so long as I had the legal backing to do it.
It's all about the hobby for me.

I offered more than one option to do a particular thing. Often I tried to include the "real" one and a "how I do it" one. Some folks don't like that aspect of my rules set, others find it to be a bonus. But I think this is what I (and perhaps others) like about S&W... options. Both original rules and common house rules are presented, and this gives the S&W player a good taste of the possibilities that are inherent in either OD&D or S&W. Don't sell yourself short, Marv. S&W Whitebox is a spectacular game!

Here's my interpretation:
Gold dragons can cast spells up to a spell level equal to their HD (so a 1HD dragon can cast only 1st level spells, a 6HD dragon can cast up to 6th level spells, etc.). They know one spell per HD. So, they should have one spell of each spell level (they could have more of any particular level, but they would have to sacrifice a spell of another level to do so).
Sooooo... WRT to other dragons, I would say if a dragon only knows 1st and 2nd level spells, then it only knows one of each (assuming the dragon is 2 or more HD).

Interesting. Do you know if this is noted/recorded anywhere? I've read it here (but IIRC it appeared also in other web reports in that period). Thanks for that info. While I see a lot of potential in those statements, I'm not hopeful. There really isn't anything that says, "We're re-releasing older editions in PDF format for historical appreciation (or whatever)." In fact I've been reading a lot of disconcerting things elsewhere that say that Wizards is dumping Dungeon and Dragon and switching to paperback core books. Oh well. As much as I'd like to passionately get behind a simple, legitimate release of older material, even to the profit of current stake-holders, I can see that there doesn't seem to be a strong enough feeling in favor of it. Too much doubting and guessing (and that's not aimed at you Mike; I know you've been there and understand the industry better than I do). Well, at least I have my OD&D PDF's.

While I understand your sentiments, if it can be profitable for them to re-release the PDF's, I would think that it should be very little work for them to do so.
I highly doubt that they would be bothered to rescan or rework the material, and IMO, Lulu is on-par with the current print quality of Wizard's product line (sure - not everything in the old product lines could be made POD due to poor scan quality).
I also seriously doubt that the demand for re-released material would be high enough to "dilute" the current product line.

My guess (without having to do the side-by-side comparison) is that only a certain amount of 0ed creatures and items were "covered" by the SRD, so Matt/Marv/et al decided to add a few to help flesh out the list. Just a guess though... Marv may have a more accurate answer. This thread is almost a year old now, but I thought I'd add a few comments to it since some of the older concerns with WB have since been addressed. S&W:WB was edited at the end of last year and I think it "fixed" some of the concerns with respect to 0ed/WB differences. For example, the original saving throw table is now included as an option. While it's all well and good to love the original game (and I do!) and be disappointed with the "clones", with more and more folks wanting to try the original edition every day, it's not reasonable for people to expect them all to fork over the heavy cash for the original (on eBay, etc.), so it's nice to have free and freshly available "clones" to demo the "old ways". And it's also unreasonable to expect those "clones" to be 100% copies, as we all know that that would be technically illegal . Games like S&W:WB, LL (+OEC), etc. are more than adequate substitutes in my opinion, and need not be "stepping stone" games. All right... I'm going back to my wine now... ;D

Perhaps this has been discussed already (I'm a little lazy at the moment, so I haven't looked for it), but I would really like to start a petition (or whatever) to have Hasbro/WotC release OOP products on Lulu or RPGNow, etc.
Anyone with some experience in this area or a dram of gumption willing to offer up some advice (or help start the ball rolling)?
