I haven't. I have been looking for an inexpensive way to build some armies and try it though!

Just to report back from our Friday night game with X2 The Isle of Dread, we had a blast. 5 hours and it was only the last hour or so finally arriving on the island! They had to hire a ship, find a captain, work out the terms, make the voyage (tailed by a dragon turtle), only to arrive with 5 NPC crewmember fighters, to start trekking the island and running into 4 werebears. (Wandering monster table) No pc's perished, though it was close, 3 npc's dead, 2 others ran away screaming. The cleric was nearly killed by the minotaur PC in a battle rage "friendly fire" moment. In the final outcome, one werebear was chaaed away with wolfsbane, the other 3 were killed. Minotaur infected with lycanthropy (fatal to non-humans) he has 8 days to find the equivalent of an 11th level cleric to do a cure disease.
Btw, even the kids enjoyed the "non-combat" parts of the game. Especially finding a captain and ship at The Dusty Mussel Inn.
Curtains closed, snacks and dice put away.

Major revisions and changes on the Google doc, see link above. Still needs more grammatical type editing, but it's getting there!

I may be willing to submit the Minotaur Class in a couple weeks. Still working some play-testing/balance bugs and then it needs a thorough editorial clean-up.

We did a play-test last night for about 5 hours. There's some kinks in the battle-rage ability. The minotaur was in heated combat with a werebear and down by more than 60% of his hit points. While in battle rage, he nearly took out a cleric that was trying to do a "cure light wounds" spell on him from behind. The cleric took a nasty one. Both lived, the minotaur later in same battle, took out a 2nd werebear, but also contracted the disease and has 8 days to find an 11th level cleric or higher to do a "cure Disease" spell on him or he dies.
While we liked the "friendly fire" aspect brought into the game, it kind of makes the rest of the players just sit and watch passively.
I'm thinking of maybe just giving a slightly higher edge to melee attacks and damage across the board, removing the "battle rage" state, but perhaps keeping in a 10% chance of PC's getting hurt when in adjacent range. But no "on and off" of the condition/state.
Thoughts???

While the "common tongue" is known by most humans, it's only known by 20% of non-humans.
Elves and dwarves aren't human. Ergo, Veera the Elf and Nichol the Dwarf only had a 20% chance of knowing the common tongue. We rolled the dice to check it... and they didn't. We had a brief discussion about how Warrain the Wizard was going to have to act as a translator for both of them (he was the only party member with an Intelligence score high enough to learn their languages), but then the good ol' alignment languages came to the rescue: Everybody quickly changed their alignment to Lawful and the crisis was averted. Alignement language make sense! Another confession..... no only did I/we never use encumbrance rules since day one in 1981, we also never used or even cared about alignment language. I always thought the idea of an "alignment" language as kind of amusing. However, I see your point and see that it can be useful!

Those are some epic t-shirts right there. I liked the sudo one best (yeah, not D&D, but Unix/Linux geekiness)

@jmmccann et al. I think I was attempting humor with the "Certified" remark. I don't see myself wearing something with that on it. Especially if it rings of the "Smith/Jones Family Reunion: 2gether 4Ever" variety I see at the thrift-stores when we're rummaging for cigar boxes and game parts. :-)

My only question is, "now why would I play a fighter when I could play a Minotaur?" Yes, I can't wield ranged weapons......but other than that, they are like a Fighter+. Well, they eschew populated areas, no magic items except perhaps a two-handed weapon, no spells, lousy social life, clumsiness, poor eyesight.... there are a good deal of limits. But, heck ya, they're cool.

I've been thinking I need to get one. Maybe in this thread, like Alex and the Sensei have already done, we could post some pictures of the ones we think are grooviest? @sensei: I'd wear that shirt in a heartbeat. How could we make it? Alex: I dig the Dungeon Master shirt--understated, says it like it is = awesome. Methinks I could put together a graphic, put it on a tan shirt..... somewhere it needs to say something like, " Certified 1974 Grognard" in the old "D&D lettering style. I know I guy that does sports shirts.... he may be able to do something like this if we give him the graphics. I don't know what the dpi, etc. would need to be for a shirt. but I'm sure it's 300 or less.

I decided that for tonight's gaming session, my boys, some friends, and I are going to use X1 Isle of Dread and I'm going by my parents' house to find all the toy dinosaurs we dropped off there a few years ago....

I just discovered a nifty little steampunk style wild west series by Mike Resnick. In general I love the concept of steam but when I start to read the books I don't like the writing style, but so far I'm really hooked on these..... ...Anyway, reading this has gotten me looking for my box of Boot Hill stuff again. Between makafan's Boot Hill PBP, and this idea.... I've been getting mine out a lot more this month!

I had a friend who ran a DragonLance campaign and I think there might have been stats for Minotaur PC characters there. It would be interesting to compare this one with the "official" version. It's possible that is what is referenced at the beginning of the thread I referenced above at the GoblinoidGames/LL forum. the "Minotaurs of Krynn." The description there was the original template that I had taken all of our self-imagined notes and folded/adapted into. There's a small bit of remnant there left to see my original publicly announced plagiarism. Be sure to see my link at the top for my Google doc. THAT's the one that I've been editing and drafting out. (and the one we'll be play-testing though an adapted "X1 Isle of Dread" session tonight with my boys and a few friends. w00t!

I have two players that are new to D&D and the ToEE might be a bit too deadly for them so I might leave it off until they complete an adventure or two. I'd agree, and just giving them powerful characters to start, would in some sense "spoil them" and make them loathe to later start with 1st level "like everybody else." Unless, of course, they don't get to keep their pre-gens. 1st levels in OD&D can be short-lived and that's really part of the fun.

I had looked at Caverns of Thracia, but I still need to find it on PDF or get a decent copy on eBay. I have played through the ToEE and we had a blast. How hard would it be to adapt the ToEE to OD&D? It wouldn't be difficult to adapt, depending on whether or not you were playing "pure" 3LBB's" or if you were going "Greyhawkian" with the optional weapon damages, hit dice, etc. Either, way, you could play and adapt on-the-fly I suppose. Check your PM's.

So, here we have Dirk Benedict, who played Lt. Starbuck in the classic Battlestar Galactica, with Katee Sackhoff, who played Kara “Starbuck” Thrace in the modern Battlestar Galactica, in a Starbucks coffee shop. The mind reels. And they're posers with those cigars, unless there's actually a Starbucks that allows cigars.

In addition to Grey Elf's Forbidden Lore, Dan Boggs also has a great guide on using Chainmail with OD&D. You are supposed to be able to get it from his store here: sites.fastspring.com/apriorcrs/product/product_catalogHowever, I've been having trouble trying to download it. Perhaps you will have better luck! Yeah.... I'm not giving anybody my CC info for a free download. Just tried it. I think this is something I may have already. (Done by others on this board?)

Looks good! I'd love to play one. My only question is why don't they get their Str bonus to their gore damage? I'd think that'd be a natural for them. Good point! ...See, this is why I love teamwork! I have no idea why it originally said "no Strength Bonus," but I've modified the document. Please DO play-test!
