Got an email - new release date is 12/17. It exists. I have actually held one on my hands, thanks to my friend who owns a game store. I haven't committed to buying a copy or I would have ripped off the plastic and looked inside, but I did get to hold the box and so on. If I buy one, I'm torn between overpaying (full $150 at the game store) and looking for a deal on amazon. I like to support my local game store, but it's not like I'm really going to use this product much. (I have 3 copies of the original OD&D already.)

Yeah, I know all the reasons I shouldn't buy it, especially at a store.
But the phrase "It must be mine!" runs through my head...

Okay, I've made up my mind, I'm going to buy these, and Best of Dragon #1-#2. Somehow no matter what campaign I'm planning and running, I always return to an ODnD-based game. It's time to get the real deal.

Okay, I've made up my mind, I'm going to buy these, and Best of Dragon #1-#2. Somehow no matter what campaign I'm planning and running, I always return to an ODnD-based game. It's time to get the real deal. Having the "real deal" is nice, whether by e-bay origninal or WotC reprint. It's been my "go to" edition since the 1970's and is somehow a lot better (to me) than any of the simulacra games, even if the simulacra are better organized. Something special about that quirky set of rulebooks that I love. I find that Best of the Dragon #1 is awesome, #2 is fine but not as cool as #1. My favorite dragon magazines run through #25 or #30 or so, and after that they seem to have a lot more AD&D focus and less OD&D. BotD1 mainly covers the SR and my favorite Dragon issues. Those plus some polyhedral dice in the "orignal" colors (yellow d4, orange d6, green d8, blue d12, white d20) to complete my "must have" list.

The funny part is that the first DnD I played was 3rd edition and it was much later that I've met the older editions and their clones. Despite being more chaotic, somehow I handle the ODnD booklets easier, than any other edition.

I think this is because as the game has evolved, it has accumulated layers of rules to make it more complex. More classes, more races, more options like skills and feats. Each new group takes the old game and adds in more ideas, but that makes the game more complex.
I never got used to all of the extras in 3E and beyond, which isn't necessarily a fault of the game as much as a fault of me, but the early OD&D stuff just clicked from the start and I've never had many of the issues that others seem to have had with understanding OD&D. (My background in miniatures and wargames may have helped, too.)

Actually I like the extra races and classes. Those are preloaded elements, they really don't bother much after you're done with character creation, you don't have to reference. It's the number of rules and charts you have to reference during gameplay that makes the difference.

Quick question (not that it would change anything, since I've already ordered it): what kind of paper are the booklets made of?

Personally I cancelled my Amazon order and switched to Noble Knight, because I knew the latter would be infinitely more reliable. YMMV.

*still* waiting for my Amazon copy to arrive. Yeah, and they had a release date of Dec 17 most recently listed. Yet their site shows it as sold out, and my orders page shows that they "We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date." I ordered in March. They need more time, huh? Meanwhile, my FLGS has like 5 of them for $140.

I find that Best of the Dragon #1 is awesome...BotD1 mainly covers the SR and my favorite Dragon issues. The first Best of the Dragon is basically an OD&D supplement. It has the ranger, illusionists, bards, a pantheon, a random monster generator, a random demon generator, loads of history and advice, funny stuff, etc. The older printings are even better because they include the old advertisements.

My past experiences with Amazon pre-orders is that they're often be delivered on date the item was listed as becoming available. I ordered my OD&D reprint from them back in February, and the delivery estimate now shows: "We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date." The product listing shows it as "temporarily out of stock." I'm beginning to wonder if Wizards or the distributor can't or won't fulfill the Amazon orders.

Nothing from Amazon yet... My problem with other options is that the shipping is ridiculous to Europe. Edit: BookDepository lowered the price. Still bit more expensive than Amazon, but still acceptable. Thus I cancelled the Amazon order.

Bookdepository is Amazon, they brought them out! Good to know. Still, on Amazon they were unavailable, on the bookdepo site they were available. That's all I needed.

Barnes & Noble has them online as of today (I wonder if they are in their stores, too?), they are $108 there, with free shipping. That's pretty close to the current Amazon price.

Yeah I am tempted to go BD too, however I have found 'usually dispatched in 48 hours' to be pretty rubbish on BD. There is no notification of shipping, only 'imminent'. Not sure what to do now...
