I know the covers will most likely be a source of contention, but I have to say I like this one...

Hm, despite the placement of the line breaks, I always read it as:
Rules for Fantastic Medieval Wargames Campaigns, Playable with Paper and Pencil and Miniature Figures.
Whereas this new cover, thanks to font size changes, clearly breaks it up as:
Rules for Fantastic Medieval Wargames. Campaigns Playable with Paper and Pencil and Miniature Figures.
Just interesting.

I also wonder if the change from “Volume” to “Book” was inspired by Traveller.

Yeah I wish they could have used the old covers, but the content is more important to me. I had to sell my RQ1/2/3,Od&d LBBs and big Ad&D collections about 10 years ago when I was laid off from my job. I bought PDFs later of the LBBs and managed to get back print copies of the 1e books, but just cannot shell out hundreds of dollars for an OCE and late prints of sup I-IV.
And I HATE using PDfs or having to print out rulebooks, so S&W wb and complete have taken up the brunt of table abuse.

Interesting. I always parsed the title the same way you did, Falconer. Curious that they read it differently. Someone should do a poll to see how we as a group here interpret that!
I also find it curious that they are apparently using the original interior art (based on the preview pages) but changed the covers.

I wonder how far they will take the corrections? I guess they would need to look at the remaining Tolkien and Burrows references carefully...? I wonder if anyone at WotC has read this?

I appreciate they're giving attention to this version of the game, and are obviously putting time and effort into a very nice package. Unfortunately a $150 price tag translates to the same problem as the original LBBS: it's too much of an investment for a play copy. If I would buy this, even at the Amazon preorder price, I still would never want to use it at the table. I would really just like a low-price, legal way to get copies of the booklets (multiple copies of M&M) that I wouldn't have to keep in plastic sleeves. POD would be a nice option someday down the road.
These are just collectables.... they should realize that the interest in OD&D is from people who want to play it, not from people who just want to pay a bunch of money for collectors' items. Maybe they don't realize that it is an actual living game?

I've always read the title the same way as Falconer as well.
I'm looking forward to this finally coming out. I don't mind the new covers. (Though I like the original M&M cover a lot as well.)

Not that I am long time into ODnD but I agree the WotC way doesn't make sense to me looking at it with a reasonably clean sheet. Can't wait til this comes out, be cool to have it. This game has been around as long as I could walk!

Yeah, any news on this yet? The amazon release got postponed, and, well, I am rather busy planning a game. Temple of the Frog, here I go... Probably changing the setting, though, because as a Blackmoorian... There are things I don't want to touch.

Another Bart Carroll column on the reprint, focusing on "Book 2". No sample this time, just some quotes & a cover comparison. It mentions that they are calling Greyhawk, "Book IV", so it seems they've renumbered the Supplements as "Books IV-VII". OD&D Excerpts

Makes sense, the renaming; but maybe sacrilege to the true Grognards here? Can't say I am enamoured with the cover art though. I do like WAR but he suits the more PC's as super heroes style of latter DnD. My favourite piece of his, available in S&W flavour too! But man excitement is building for me. On this site it is a bit like being partially blind, I get flashes of ODnD and can work from DD, S&W etc. But I can't wait to contribute to the discussions rather than following them.

I also find it curious that they are apparently using the original interior art (based on the preview pages) but changed the covers. I think what I'll do for the covers is just print out the original covers and leave a bit on each end to make a dust jacket. That way, my Greyhawk will have the original cover, still be Supplement One, also keep the grubby, Cheeto-stained fingerprints of the players off my collectible copies.

I also find it curious that they are apparently using the original interior art (based on the preview pages) but changed the covers. I guess changing all the covers makes them look less obvious to the casual observer than they would if they just changed Supplement III. Of course, it could also be that colour covers are not in the budget.

I, too, would prefer the original covers, but the new ones are not too bad IMO. By the way, coffee , that's a clever idea.

The next preview has been posted. As with "Book II", it's just some quotes and the cover art comparison. OD&D Excerpts, Book IIII assume they are going to work through the four supplements next. It's nice to see OD&D in the public eye.

Today they have a preview of Book IV, Greyhawk. There's a one page preview of the Foreword. The text looks identical to the original. They've used the same san serif font as the first three volumes (Arial?). My copy of Greyhawk uses a serif font, but according to the Acaeum the second and later printings of the Greyhawk use a different font than the first printing, which uses one similar to the LBBs. Presumably they are using the same font in all of the reprints for consistency. Their artwork comparison shows the cover of a later printing of Greyhawk. IMO, worst updated cover art so far!

Oh my god those covers are horrible! I disagree they're "horrible" though I would certainly have gone a different route. They just don't seem to have the "look and feel" of the work they are representing. Clean hirez scans, perhaps lightly touched up in PhotoShop, would have been nice. Tribute paintings, such as the Blackmoor and Holmes tributes hot-linked below, would also have been nice. The artist is Kevin Mayle.

It's possible there were rights issues with the original cover pieces.

It's possible there were rights issues with the original cover pieces. That was the explanation given back when they first were mentioned by WOTC. On Twitter or FB, IIRC.
