It's possible there were rights issues with the original cover pieces. That was the explanation given back when they first were mentioned by WOTC. On Twitter or FB, IIRC. I've no problem with new covers per se, but as others have said the tone of these seems an ill fit with the game, worst offender being the first book. As I am not the target audience for WotC products (and since I already have the PDFs from when they were legally available) it's nothing I will be getting worked up about, but I do wish that "extreme chaos spiky bits" aesthetic hadn't crept over from Games Workshop in the 90s to D&D. I prefer my D&D fighting men to look as though they could happily fit in with Ivanhoe.

I agree, they could have gone more "old school", for the covers, and that is my preference too. But I think these prints are likely seen as potential sales for alot of people who are more curious about the original game, than those who did, or might still play it. Attract both new, and old. Thats just a thought, no idea if true.
I have the old pdfs too, but I hate them. Pdfs that is... I also gave up on collecting years ago, and I will use these at the table or for reference, so the covers do not irk me too much. The content in a nicely printed format is what I need (a hardcover would be even better!)

It'd be cool to see a digest sized hardback, similar to how they redid the S and A series in hardback. I don't see it happening, though. I think they'd have done that from the get go if that was their intention. I'm also not sure they'll continue producing these sorts of things once D&D 5e is out.

Got an email - new release date is 12/17.
Still happy about this, but let's face it, this is a coffee table product, more than anything else.

I wanted a pair for my sons for Christmas. They'll still get them, but we'll see when they get delivered. I expect to use my copy; my originals are getting fragile.

[...] but let's face it, this is a coffee table product, more than anything else. Nope. I intend to use the reprints as playing copies and keep my originals safely in a box. I don't care about the expense, I can replace these new ones but the originals are increasingly uncommon finds. Especially ones in as good a shape as mine.

Right, if only they would sell Men & Magic individually for players’ copies.

Yeah, I intend to use my copy as well, since I lack originals in the first place. The reprints are cheaper than beat up copies of the old books.

I hope the booklets are designed for playability then, and don't feature, dunno all kinds of horrible coffee-table-isms, like glossy paper, and on.

I fully expect the pages to be glossy. Any particular reason? Were the AD&D reprints glossy? Just curious.

The AD&D reprints are glossy (which I don’t like).

The AD&D reprints are glossy (which I don’t like). I have the AD&D reprints also, and I don't like the glossy finish on the pages either. The combination of glossy finish and small text makes them uncomfortable for me to use. The net result is that I still use my 20ish year old AD&D hardbacks as reading/reference copies, while the reprints are just filler on the bookshelf.

Well, [subject has entered uncodable response]! I'm still looking forward to the reprints but this diminishes my enthusiasm for the reprints somewhat.

But not today.

For those of you on FaceBook, check out Steve Winter's photographs of the official OD&D reprint. There are currently 3. It's beautiful!

Could someone please repost the Steve Winter pics for those of us (maybe just me?) without a Facebook account?

I love it (have two on order), but not sure I like the color illustration on the inside of the box lid, for some reason it doesn't feel right. Seems to me that a painting of a party fighting a dragon might be more fitting for D&D.

It’s an homage to the white box cover.

Hadn't noticed that, good call Falconer.
The art style is still not in my taste, with perhaps the exception of the Blackmoor one.

Previews of the last three supplements are now up: BlackmoorEldritch WizardryGod, Demi-Gods & HeroesEdit: Now that the previews are all up, I made a blog post linking to all of them and including Steve Winter's photos: OD&D Reprint PreviewsWhat's the name of the artist of the updated covers? Someone wrote "W.A.R." above, but I'm not sure who that refers to.

What's the name of the artist of the updated covers? Someone wrote "W.A.R." above, but I'm not sure who that refers to. I believe it's Wayne Reynolds, the Pathfinder guy, but don't take that as gospel. I found it amusing that WoTC didn't want to risk offending anyone's delicate sensibilities by showing the original cover to Eldritch Wizardry. Uh oh! No evil boobies for you!

Heh, not even in the previews ... if they didn't want to draw attention to their prudishness, they should not have made the old vs. new cover comparison a feature. Well, at least we won't be going to hell (well, actually "we" will be, as we've all seen the original).
