Fair enough. But that Squad Leader stuff is REALLY out of control! 80 bucks for a rulebook and you still can't play the game. But that is not a fair comparison - ASL is a way of life.

Or for $80 or less, you can buy a goodly number of WWII squad-level games from other publishers that come complete with rules, maps, scenarios, and counters all in one package: ATS Stalingrad, Combat Commander Europe, Conflict of Heroes Awakening the Bear, Lock n'Load Band of Heroes, Band of Brothers Screaming Eagles, and etc.

... But that Squad Leader stuff is REALLY out of control! ... I have original SL. Fantastic game! I never saw the need to upgrade to Advanced SL... call me a \GROG-nard\, or however you say that. While Multi-Man Publishing, Inc. publishes ASL, their web site clearly states: Advanced Squad Leader, Squad Leader, Up Front, and Panzerblitz are trademarks of Avalon Hill Games, Inc., and are used with permission from Avalon Hill Games, Inc., a Hasbro affiliate. All rights reserved. Original SL went out of print when Hasbro bought Avalon Hill. Original SL also made BoardGameGeek's list of " Games gone and likely never to be reprinted again" #85. However, given Hasbro's recent enthusiasm for reprinting original editions of games, I predict we will see a $200 deluxe republication of original SL, in it's original purple box, just in time for it's 40th anniversary in 2017. Meanwhile, a quick search on eBay shows that I can "buy it now," probably a 3rd or 4th print, in good/punched condition for as little as $40. And, of course, there's the totally free VSQL module for the VASSAL engine. But I'm totally sure that after being off-the-market for 40 years, "the market will bear" a $200 MSRP for a purple-boxed reprint, especially if they can over-hype it for 9 months or so. Maybe they'll even make a wood box out of purple Cercis canadensis bark, and throw in some extra dice, to make it all worth while! Yet another "manufactured" collectable.

I am not sure if you are joking or not but I doubt it. Hasbro/ new AH has done nothing with the old AH games other than license them. MMP has shown no sign of reviving the original games. ASL Starter Kits fill the niche of "similar to ASL but cheaper and simpler" and are reasonably well regarded. I could go on but this is off-topic and I suspect you are not really serious so I'll stop, or we could take the discussion to the "other games" area...

The ASL Starter Kits are great items on their own, and also a good way to ease into the deeper waters of ASL for those inclined to take the plunge. I'm stoked about the upcoming ASLSK Pacific and Elst games.

Thought I'd mention, with the lower pre-order price of $87.85, Amazon guarantees you the lowest price if it should go down further before release. Not to mention, it's free shipping. Right now, that price could be rationalized as $10 per book + $17 for ref sheets, box, and dice. Sounds reasonably priced from that point of view.

$86.97 for Prime Members ... [edit] I just pre-ordered two of them.
One set to play, a second to keep on the bookshelf :-)
FWIW, I'm glad someone showed me how to play D&D. If I'd been given this set when I was 13 I would'nt have had a clue how to play.

Wake me up when the PDFs are released.
For one thing, I can print the PDFs oversize so I can read them. I can't read my AD&D DMG any more, even with reading glasses.

I printed my legally purchased PDFs (from before "the purge") at a local print ship and was pleased with the translation from digest size to letter size. I put the print out in page protectors in a ring binder and now it is my "go to" set. My aging books and game box set securely on shelf.

Latest word from Amazon is that the set will be delayed at least until December. Much I care, I already have a complete set on PDF (don't recall where I got them; must have fell off the back of a packet). But it amuses me that, after all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over "piracy" and "copyright", I'm left standing with a handful of money that they can't be bothered to take.

Has there been lots of wailing about piracy and copyright? I haven't heard anything about that from them in recently.
Do you think people are going to pirate the books now that they have to wait an extra month for them?

Price went back up 20 plus bucks over what the lowest price Amazon had for pre order a couple months ago. I did not get in on that lowest price unfortunately. I think I will just wait until they go up for sale and decide whether to grab a set or not.

Do you think people are going to pirate the books now that they have to wait an extra month for them? I'm talking about the barn door slamming when they pulled the legitimate PDFs, when anyone who wanted them long since had them legitimately or otherwise. Now they have a chance to actually make money on their 'Intellectual Property' for the first time in DECADES, and they're screwing it up. This amuses me.

I suspect people who want a print edition OD&D are going to pay for this even if they have pirated copies of the game. I put an order in when they were announced, and I have the PDFs. Copies of the original boxed set are basically priced out of anyones reach if you aren't a collector of this stuff. (Never mind it's hard to find a copy of those books in excellent condition.)
I'd also set aside stuff they did in 2009. Clearly they are moving in a new direction. They are re-scanning and publishing PDFs on dndclassics.com.

I don't believe anything Amazon say about publish date until they actually ship, so there could be no delay.

For some reason I thought the release date was updated to December on Wizard's website too, but it's still listed as November there. Maybe Amazon is being crazy. Wouldn't be the first time.

Or maybe WOTC will ship to game stores first and Amazon second.
I plan on buying one myself (I'm a pretty nice guy and I deserve a treat), but I'm going to get it at my FLGS. They're pretty nice guys, too, and they deserve my support. Might be full price, might be discounted, but I'll feel better about it than if I scrounge for the best price on Amazon. (And I mean no disrespect for Amazon, either.)

A two-page sample of the Men & Magic reprint, showing the Foreword and Introduction, is here on the Wizards site: www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4ex/20131015They are doing some minor editing/proofreading. I note: Forward -> Foreword Dungeons and Dragons -> Dungeons & Dragons Vol I, II, III -> Book I, II, III I wonder how far they will take the corrections?

The first is just a spelling correction. The others are probably related to intellectual property law.
I bet they fix %Lair...
