Let me see. Here is how the Foundation plans to release the Jakallan Underworld: - A PDF version, similar to the "Mimeo EPT" - facsimile on the left page, text reproduction on the right
- A POD version, which will include the facsimile text and some supplementary material, based on Prof. Barker's notes and player recollections
- A PDF release of the maps, including the 17 x 22 1st level and the 8.5 x 11 2nd and 3rd levels. We hope to have a reproduction of the original maps themselves, along with a full-color more modern version
- A POD version of the maps, as per the PDF version - we're still investigating the best and most cost-effective way to release them
There will be maps (obviously), along with Prof. Barker's key. There are certainly new miscellaneous magical items, as well as various factions connected to different locations. Since this is a facsimile edition, all stats will be for Empire of the Petal Throne. We're transcribing the key right now, and assessing the best way to capture the original maps. I've been asked for release dates in the past, and have been reluctant to promise anything. What I can say is that it is moving along, now that we've figured out how to deal with the slowly-deteriorating computer disks the Professor had many, many of (that was our summer project). Wow, this sounds perfect! EPT is my prefered rules system for tekumelani adventuring so. Really looking forward to this!

This is one of the rpg projects that I feel most excited about! I assume that most (or perhaps all) work is done without pay and in peoples spare time so I understand it will take as long time as it takes. But I'd like to express some friendly interest with a quople of questions, if anyone has insight in these matters. What kind of release is planned? Pdf, print or both? Illustrations? Color or black and white? What kind of material will it contain? Maps? Locations? New monsters? Factions and politics? Will there be stats for any specific rules system(s)? Do you have any idea of when it could be available? 2014? 15?

If there where powerful sorcerers would they not be able to take control over the state (if worldly power interested them) and with the use of magical means of long distance communication and mass destruction (and construct soldiers, and surveillance, and...) they should be able to replace any tribal or feudal society with a centralized government. Of course, the leaders of such a magicocracy would not want competing sorcerers outside the state and would therefore need to enforce a strict and hierarchical guild-system or some other kind of government monopoly of magic.
But of course, things may look different if magicians are very rare, very common or do not have any interest in mundane affairs.

He was one of the great writers in sf and fantasy. I enjoyed his style and humor. The Dying Earth cycle, the Tschai cycle and the Moon Moth where really good and I'm looking forward to reading the Lyonesse trilogy.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one reading this kind of stuff for fun! Earlier this year I started writing a blog on this subjet: sapientastellarum.blogspot.se/There's a chronology of the development of the genre and some links to online sources. I meant to write some more posts during the year, but then life happened.

Open mike during feeding at the reptile exhibit, slowed down 61% and with a theremin in the back. Haha, I'd buy the record in no time! ;D

This is great stuff - as usual! I really like the barsoomesque egg laying business and the notion of eusocial differences between sexes. Looking forward to this series!

This project to create a large dungeon based on The Black Abomination of Shub Niggurath (though I believe the author is thinking of The Black Abomination of Nyarlathotep in hex 0211) seems to be worth keeping an eye on.

Hey baby, hey baby, he ... Are we going to see a compendium of the levels now that the dungeons complete? Yes, that would be great! I've been enjoying the various sublevels, bit to have the entire megadungeon collected in one printed volume would make it a lot more useful for actual play.

I really enjoyed the John Carter film and would love to see this one as well! We dont have nearly enough of pulp / sword and planet films. Be forewarned that the books have a whiff of ERB's politics here and there which, one can be sure, are not politically correct. There is an overt nod to the KKK in one chapter, and unmistakable praise for racialist scientific theories that were conventions of ERB's day. This does not bother me in the least--the book was written in the 30's and during that period of American history... before expose journalism became vogue...the Klan enjoyed very widespread popularity and politicians routinely pandered to them if they wanted even a chance of being elected. Take in in the context of it's era and it would not be offensive to anyone in the least. The chief antagonists of the books I read were "Thorists", Thorism being a very thinly veiled motif of Marxism. You can't read the first book and fail to guess what ERB thought about Marxism/Socialism...he hated it, obviously, and regarded it with all the horror of his American contemporaries. Well, speaking as a marxist/socialist, some of my favorite authors are Lovecraft, Howard and Burroughs and I'm not the least disturbed by the fact that their fiction often contain political views that are entirely contrary to my own. I read science fiction and fantasy for interesting weird ideas and entertaining adventures, and as long as any political content doesnt take too much space I dont care if its reactionary or progressive.

Well, there is a great amount of good material from TSR but if I look at what I use at the table its predominantly OSR stuff.

I made a short little game about gonzo monster wrestling. Its not really osg as such (its based on the Supercrew rules system), but I guess some of you might be interested in a rules light game inspired by japanese monster movies and gladiator battles. Have a look at Space Mutant Gladiators here!

I first encountered Professor Barkers Tékumel thirteen years ago and quickly became very fascinated. The news of his death sadens me and I think of his family and friends, but the thought of his contributions to science and culture is inspiring and I'm glad that the Foundation takes care of his legacy so that we can enjoy his creation in the future.

Caverns Measureless to Man is home to two S&W campaigns: my own Swords and Super-Science of Xuh'lan and Vidugavia's City of Exiles. There is sufficient info (house rules, setting stuff, random tables, etc) for running a game in both campaigns.

BooksHayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, set in post-apocalyptic and polluted Earth (venomous seas and forests full of spores able to turn flesh into stone), where you can find genetic manipulation and people with great empathic powers. Seconded. Nausicaä is one of the best sf works I have read, in any media. Read it, even if you dislike manga and even if you have seen the movie (which only covers the first album). Its a great post-apocalypse story with bizarre creatures and fascinating technological artifacts. Lots of stuff that you can steal for games.

Malcadon - there is not much left to add to your fine list (I especially appreciate the inclusion of Nausicaä!), but I would like to mention Empire of the Atom and The Wizard of Linn by AE van Vogt. Also, Druuna: Morbus Gravis by Serpieri is a comic on the topic of a generation ship overrun by mutants. Another lost star ship story is Aniara, a dystopic science fiction poem by Harry Martinson.

I'm pretty sure the movie will end up quite far from the novel, but I try to think of it as "a sword n planet movie inspired by barsoom" rather than "A Princess of Mars faithfully brought to the screen". From that point of view it will probably be decently entertaining.

My friend Berra has made a couple of posts on our blog, Caverns Measureless to Man, about urban adventures and street gangs. The articles are: * Island of Alanu, concerning apartment houses as the buidling blocks of the city and street gangs as the sole upholders of what passes for law and order. Also PCs as members of street gangs, and urban adventures. * Some Inspirations for Alanu City of Exiles, continues the discussion about street gangs. This may not be entirely compatible with Tsolyani conditions, especially the question of the state and the sovereigns monopoly on violence. But as long as we stay within the foreigners quarters I can see how the Tsolyani would like to pit various fractions of the foreign scum against each other and would prefer that the inhabitants of the ghetto uphold their own order so that the imperial soldiers dont have to bother with petty fights over turf, drug deals, prostitution, stolen possesions, etc. The Tsolyani cities may be free of organised crime, but I think the foreigners quarter could be an entirely different thing.
