I'm currently reading Berserk, a really cool Japanese manga, which mixes both fantasy and horror. Berserk is about Gattsu (Guts in the english translation), the Black Swordsman, who in his search for vengeance, wanders around the world slaying demons. Berserk was also made into a 25-episode anime series and is on my list as a "must see" for anyone interested in fantasy and horror. For more info, here’s a link to the Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk_(manga)

Hello, I live in Michigan. Started wargaming in the 1960's. Played my first D&D game in Dec 1975. Played alot as a player and also DM (Three year Campaign that was more like a war movie than a drama). I don't play now but really enjoy reading all the great ideas here. I'll try to be more of a lurker than poster so I don't annoy anyone with my "ODD" opinions. Greg. Hi Greg and welcome! Please feel free to share any opinions you may have, eveyone here is pretty cool and non-judgemental. Also, I would love to hear any stories you wish to share about your gaming experiences from the old days.

Hey I am no professional lie o many others. There jus wasn.t anyone else around. Well, you still draw a heck of a lot better than I do and I can't imagine the books that include your art without your illustrations.

I'm curious to see if 3rd level is a good spot to have a Tuckers Kobolds run... I'd rather face a Balrog than Tuckers Kobolds!

That's because some of the letters spell a filtered word. Take the last five letters, drop the "e", that's the filtered word. Wow, talk about me missing the obvious. Thanks Dubeers!

Hi all. I've lurked here for a while, but only just decided to start posting. I'm too young to remember OD&D, but I've recently started getting into it, thanks mainly to the blogosphere. I'm currently planning to run an OD&D or Swords & Wizardry campaign with my local group here in Japan. Hi Noisms! Welcome aboard! [Note: I tried using the Japanese greeting but the board filters kept changing the text... weird. Here's the phase with spaces between each letter: H a j i m e m a s h i t e]

Speaking of awesome dungeons, Amityville Mike, I've been visiting your blog daily eagerly waiting for the next Stonehell dungeon segment. If anyone hasn't seen Amityville Mike's dungeon, stop what you are doing, visit The Society of Torch, Pole and Rope and check it out.

You can get really creative with these and I'm finding this "less is more" approach matches my prefered method of refereeing. No more 30+ pages of game notes for me. Just a few of these, my adventure log and I'm done. I also love the the One-Page Wilderness Template. I hope more people jump on board with these and post them online for others to check out. Someone should start a One-Page Dungeon/Wilderness website showcasing these. That would be awesome!

This makes the fighting-men important members of the party as their first level 1+1 HD negates this effect. You're absolutely right Burke, and that is why any 1st level party who doesn't have at least one Fighting-Man is heading towards "Epic Fail!"

Why not raise the Roper's bite to 2d6 or 3d6? The beauty of OD&D is that it's your game, your adventure, your creation. Nothing is set in stone and there is no wrong way to play OD&D. Make your Ropers as deadly as you want them to be.

Tonight I ran The Haunted Tower by Chris Gonnerman for my youngest daughter (she'll be 9 in March). The module was designed to target younger players, so it was perfect for me to introduce OD&D to her. We started off by rolling up her character. She had previously played Moldvay Basic/Expert and Basic Fantasy RPG with her older sister, so she already knew most of the basics. We used the standard 3d6 method and she rolled some really decent stats: 9, 11, 14, 12, 10 and 14. She chose Elf for Race and Cleric for Class. Even though the rules state that elves can only begin as Fighting-Men and/or Magic-Users, I was totally cool with this unexpected selection and decided to run with it. After purchasing all her starting equipment, we were off. [Module Spoilers Below] Nalinsa, the elven priestess, was called to a local town to investigate the mysterious “haunted tower.” She accepted the mission and soon found herself at the entrance of this strange building. Once inside, strange things began to happen. After walking 10 feet down a corridor, she saw a flashing white shape out of the corner of her eye, but when she turned to look, it was gone. After walking another 10 feet, the floor dropped (trapdoor) and she slide down a muddy slide though cobwebs onto a dungeon floor. During her journey through these underground rooms and corridors, she encountered a Crawling Corpse, Scuttlers (mutated colorful spiders), Giant Centipedes, Alchemist’s Disc (Invisible attacking Floating Disc) and Time Critters (bird-like creatures with an aging attack). She also encountered a riddle door and a puzzle/reward trap. In the final room, she found a broken mirror which once assembled release a trapped alchemist/mage from an astral prison within. The alchemist rewarded Nalinsa with “The Golden Mule”, a small golden statuette that can transform into a real mule. It was a short, but exciting game session; both of us had a great time and we’re looking forward to our next, hopefully much longer adventure.
