Sorry for posting this in 2 threads. Thanks to the Mad Irishman and the Creative Commons license, I have revised his Moldvay era character sheet replica for OD&D. Here's a link to the PDF: www.fandomaniacs.com/odnd-character-sheet.pdfHere's version 2 with "Stone" changed to "Turn to Stone" under Saving Throws (I thought "Stone" by itself looked off-balanced lined up with rest of the column): www.fandomaniacs.com/odnd-character-sheet2.pdfPlease note: The green backdrop can be hidden in the Layers menu or the color changed. You can also check out the original and other cool character sheet replicas at the Mad Irishman's website: www.mad-irishman.net/Enjoy!

The Mad Irishman Productions' website has a great Moldvay era Character Sheet replica. It's a PDF with the ability to turn on and off backdrops and border layers. www.mad-irishman.net/pub_dnd_basic.html

I sure love hearing old Blackmoor stories. You should all get together and record some of these as a podcast. That would be awesome!

Thangobrind, I have a scanned copy of the sheet grodog posted (though not in a dayglo color), as well as a DM's reference sheet and a few other character sheets oldskool in info and aesthetic. PM me with your email address, and I'll send them your way, if you like. Hi Kesher, Could you please send to me also if it's not to much trouble? I will PM my email. Thanks.

I read this thread after having thrown together a character sheet for Swords & Wizardry and it really got me thinking on the philosophy behind the sheet. While the 80x24 char plain text sheet has a certain nostalgic Nethack appeal I still think that in this day and age we can do better. Here is my take on a simple sheet, based on the ideas in this thread: mattiaswikstrom.net/rpg/bin/oddcharsheet.pdfThe sheet is designed for European A4 size paper, but it should scale OK for US letter as well. Very different and very cool. I think my kids will like this format as it includes a spot for a character sketch. They both love drawing their characters. I will print some out and give them a try. Thanks!

I just updated my custom reference sheets. Added: Combat Sequence (simplified version), Movement Rates of PC Races and Tactical Movement Rate Table (All from Philotomy's site). I have also updated my custom DM/Referee screens with these. Edited: I revised Philotomy's Simplified Combat Sequence to fit my style of running combat. "Movement" phase was moved up before Missile and Magic phases.

Feel free to include my Ascending Armor Class charts in the next or future issue. Maybe it can be part of an article about alternate methods of combat resolution. Here's a link to my custom reference sheets (PDF).

I had no idea that some of our adventures were written up in a magazine! Thanks for sharing. BTW, Marty was Marty Noetzel and Richard was Richard Snider. No problem Greg. I was going to scan the article and send it to you but I found the issue online at Scribd.com. The link is below. The article is part of the "Mapping the Dungeons" section on page 6. www.scribd.com/doc/3672858/The-Strategic-Review-Vol1-3This site (Scribd) also includes all the issues of Strategic Review (published by TSR) which was the predecessor to Dragon Magazine. Most issues are between 5-8 pages long. They're an interesting read.

I don't recall any adventures with wooly mamoths, but I do remember one adventure where the party went through a dimensional door and we found ourselves in a modern city during a war, complete with tanks and street fighting. I am afraid that I don't remember many other details about the adventure, though. I found an article about this in Strategic Review (Issue #3 1975). It's in the "Mapping the Dungeons" section (page 6). It talks about a game Dave ran where the party battle Nazis. The article mentions The Great Svenny, Marty the Elf and Richard the Hairy. Here an excerpt:"It was The Great Svenny, Marty the Elf, Richard the Hairy, and 5 berserkers against 26 soldiers with 2 cars, 2 trucks, 4 light mg’s, 2 motars (60 mm), and the usual bevy of small arms. Marty the Elf and 2 berserkers were killed, while the troops lost 7 KIA and 1 wounded before fleeing — good thing too, for shortly thereafter the remainder of the heroes’ force arrived, 3 magical types and another 12 berserkers!"

And now I've acquired the 4 supplements. All combined, it cost me $100 for the 7 booklets, shipping included. I think it's a good deal. Gosh, Eldritch Wizardry is almost spooky-looking. I really like it I used the recent thread with the OD&D box scan to print out a cover, and I used my extra Mentzer Basic box to put it on. The OD&D books fit nicely into the Mentzer box side-by-side. Way to go Ken, A combined cost of $100 is a great deal for all 7 books. Nice!

Sounds good. Will it be PDF and PoD, and/or will there actually be 3 small booklets in a white cardboard box? It will be a one booklet PDF with PoD available at Lulu.com. They will also have a Word document version available for anyone who wants to cut and paste in their own house rules.

I have my own custom reference sheets created from my originals. They are a work-in-progress but it currently includes Attack Matrix 1 & 2, Saving Throws and Clerics verses Undead tables. They also include additional info for anyone choosing to use an ascending AC system. It's a 2-page PDF but you may also have the original ODT or DOC converted document versions. If interested, PM me with your email and your file format preference and I will send the file right over to you.

I'm sure some of you who frequent the same blogs as I have seen these, and if not, I have included the video links below. Jeff's Gameblog has also published comments from some of the other dice outfits regarding these videos to get a broader outlook on the subject. Videos:www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR2fxoNHIuUwww.youtube.com/watch?v=PxmkWrDbn34Article from Jeff's Gameblog:jrients.blogspot.com/2008/12/diceman-cometh.htmlWhat are your thoughts and/or opinion on the importance of absolute randomness of dice rolling?I do believe that some dice have the odds in favor of rolling higher. I'm sure most of you have "lucky dice" you use for rolling "to hit" and for saves. As a player, I always choose my “lucky dice” when rolling for these. However, as a DM, I always look to roll with a dice that I know gives the most random outcome. Especially, when rolling monster “to hit” and saves. As a DM, I also allow player to use what ever dice they choose (as long as they aren’t loaded) including their “lucky dice.” I guess my view is that I don’t mind the odds to be a little in favor of the players and the survival of their characters, so the slight deviations of some dice have never been an issue in any of my games.

Hi everyone! My name’s Rob and I’m an extreme gamer from Long Island, NY. My gaming interests are designer board games, video games, and my absolute favorite, role-playing games.
I've been playing D&D and numerous other RPGs on and off for about 26 years. I first started in 1982 with the Moldvay D&D Basic & Expert sets. I continued playing Basic & Expert D&D until the summer of 83 when I was introduced to AD&D. After that, I traveled a long road of adventuring and buying rule books. And buying more rule books, and even more rule books. A few years down the line the 2nd Edition rules came out, and I started all over again.
In 2000, overwhelmed with the now rules-intense games that were available, including D&D, I lost interest in buying any new RPG material. It was early October 2001 when my whole outlook on gaming changed. I was searching through eBay and found OD&D 4th printing for sale. I placed and won the bid for the set. When the books arrived they were in near-mint condition. For me, it was like opening a time capsule from the mid-70s. For some reason, which I cannot recall, instead of playing the rules “as is”, I created a hybrid variation of the OD&D rules mixed with Moldvay Basic & Expert. I also used an ascending AC system stolen from 3E. For myself and the players, this rules-light variation allowed plenty of freedom to focus on more important elements of the game, the storyline and character development. I played this variation which I called “Old School RPG” via play-by-email and play-by-chat on and off for the next couple of years.
For the last 4 years, I've been collecting any vintage RPG material I can get my hands on, mostly D&D stuff. I've also been designing my own RPGs to play with my kids, every one with a classic “old school” RPG feel. I've also dabbled in some story-focused Indie RPGs.
Just recently, I've explored some of the retro-clones of D&D. I started with Basic Fantasy RPG and have just finished reading the rules for Swords & Wizardry. This has rekindled my interest in OD&D. I just finished re-reading the LBBs and plan on running my first OD&D game “as is” without any supplements this weekend. I can't recall when I've been this excited about running a game. I hope it's a success.

My understanding is that overall layout is pretty much done and we're waiting for interior artwork so that the whole thing can be put together. The sample layout sections I've seen look pretty sweet... Thanks for the update. Do you know the approximate release date they are shooting for?

I just finished reading this today and it's fantastic! You have inspired me to dust off my whitebox (bought on eBay 7 years ago) and give it a try. Thanks Matt!
I'm also looking forward to the S&W Whitebox release, I know it will be awesome!
