There's also an OSR subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/osr/I even see an occasional name there I recognize... How are you distinquishing your subreddit from the OSR subreddit? Is it limited only to playing 5e with rulechanges to make it more old school? Does the OSR subreddit seem hostile to that topic? I wouldn't say the OSR subreddit is hostile but 5e does feel a little ignored and I do understand why OSR members may wish to focus on other TTRPGs as well as their criticisms. I hope to achieve two things with this subreddit: Have a more focused OSR discussion based around using the 5e base rules as well as use it as a 'gateway' to get more 5e-only players to explore the OSR approach to gaming. The most resistance I see is from the 5e-only crowd that focuses more on mechanics over role-playing, rules as written over rulings, lore over creative freedom/using imagination to fill in the gaps, etc. It can also be helpful to discuss products such a Vornheim and how to easily apply these to 5e (I actually brought along Vornheim to a D&D Adventurer's League game and showed the DM how to use it after the game was over. He loved it!) I see the OSR as an extremely important part of the hobby and 5e is both a juggernaut in the RPG market even more so than ever and is, in my humble opinion, a great bridge to the OSR. Especially with the free Basic rules that are levels 1-20.

I am a big fan of both the OSR and D&D 5th Edition. However, I have been playing mostly 5e lately and wanted to make a place to discuss how to merge the best of both worlds, so I decided to create a subreddit for O5R if anyone is interested in joining! Hopefully, we can reach out to a larger audience! DnDO5R Subreddit

Such a great game. It really is everything S&W WhiteBox should have been. It's my personal perfect iteration of D&D. This is exactly how I feel as well.

I just received the B&W hardcover copy of White Box from Lulu today. I really love the cover art. I am very impressed with the book's physical quality and content/organization. You did a great job with this book and I look forward to using it to teach new players how to play D&D!

I just ordered the Barlowe's Extraterrestrials and Fantasy guides off of Amazon. I was also thinking about maybe using a few of the beings/creatures as a replacement for demihumans in my game. Wise move. Some of the E.T.s are definitely weird. I haven't seen the fantasy book. Post some pics when u get it? Will do!

Has anyone bought or looked through this book? Someone posted a few pages on facebook and it looks like a great statless monster manual from our literary favorites!

@xurith
If you started 3e when it came out and you were 11, that means you are most likely 1 or 2 years older than me.
I started with 3.5, stopped playing for awhile and then picked up 5th when it came out. A few years later I discovered LotFP and the world of OSR. I really like 5e, but for me it comes in second to od&d and the OSR in my tastes!
I agree that most people want a million options and it can be difficult to find people our age for more minimalistic games. For Od&d and OSR games, I've found that the play by post games here are great, also there is a Tabletop RPG One Shot Group on facebook that is really OSR friendly. LotFP is one of the moderators go-to system. Otherwise, feel free to join our discord and set up some voice-only games!
Welcome to odd74!!!

I remember seeing it when it was on kickstarter. It looks super cool but the price is just too steep for me.

I'm not much of a wargamer, but I find ancient history and warfare to be really interesting. I read through some of the rules and I do like them. I also love the huge range of army lists available for the game. This site has a lot of armies for DBA as well: www.dbaol.com/armies.htm

I do a good amount of selling on Ebay and I have not had any issues with that. I also have bought items and sold items on this facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/RPGsalestrades/I only buy and sell through paypal so that way I have protection against scammers. I also always use insurance and tracking for my packages (USPS media mail has free tracking).

foxroe I really like your intro! What about also using this handout as an intro: docs.google.com/file/d/0B3UwU25ULT8HeXM2Mk1qaF90b1E/editThis is from the The Eye of Joyful Sitting Amongst Friends blog author. I think that both of these gives potential players a basic feel for the setting without bogging them down with too much detail.

Just found this old blog post where the author turns the outdoor survival map into a beautifully textured continent. It almost reminds me of Zothique. Especially if one were to turn the lower OS desert into Tasuun (if using Lin Carter's Zothique map) or Cincor (in Tim Kirk's rendition). originaleditionfantasy.blogspot.com/search/label/lavivrus

Those condensed 5e rules are great! Thank you! I found someone else's 0e condensed rules that I printed out, bound, and put into my homemade White Box. Here is the link: original_fantasy_player_reference.pdf (120.53 KB)

I started out with 3.5 then moved to 5e. After playing 5e for awhile, I got into Lamentations of the Flame Princess and other OSR games as well as OD&D after that. I think people new to the hobby may be easier to convert, but there are still a lot of people playing 5e with the 3.5 mentality of everything needs to be balanced, have a ton of options, as well as trying to min/max the crap out of their character (tabaxi cleric/barbarian/rogue multiclass *shudders*).
Whereas new players to the hobby sometimes get bogged down with all of the spells and thick rulebooks of the later editions and may take to OD&D and OSR games that are rules-light much better.

Hi, I've been a lurker here for quite some time. I am going to be 27 years old in a few days. My first exposure to D&D was back in 2008-09 with 3.5. I have played 5e and several OSR rule sets since then. When I discovered OD&D, I fell in love with the rules and mindset behind the product. I have even made my own OD&D White Box by buying the pdfs and printing/binding them myself. I want to get into playing and refereeing OD&D but it seems to be a little difficult to generate interest in my area. Welcome! Where are you, if I may ask? I am on the east side of Orlando, Fl.
