WotC is currently hosting an anonymous survey on the D&D product line. Vote early and vote often for your favorite editions (OD&D... <cough>) and settings (<ahem>... Greyhawk and Blackmoor)! Linky

D&D Survey

Three things:
1) I voted for the setting I care least about because I have no faith in WotC not to ruin everything they touch.
B) no mention of anything from Arneson D&D (good, leave it alone.)
III) there is an open-ended comment response question at the end. Try telling them something you believe to be useful and actionable please.

I noticed your similar comment on the blog where I found this. You're probably right. My comment at the end of the survey was a "Thanks for rereleasing the old stuff - keep it coming!".

D&D Survey

Post by Scott Anderson on Aug 28, 2017 12:13:30 GMT -6
I did buy in to 4e heavily but we never played much because it felt so alien. We quickly went back to 3.5 and I did end up buying some more of that. Since 2009 the only RPG thing I have purchased from Hasbro is the PDF of B10 and I don't think that trend will change much.

I took the survey. I did say Greyhawk and Blackmoor. I also said thanks for making all editions available.
I've purchased the 0e collector's edition boxed set, the 0e PDF, the Chainmail PDF, B1 and B2 PDFs.
I bought all three of the core rule books for 5e, just to look at them. I looked at them. Then I gave them away to some buddies who actually play it as soon as I realized that I really would never use them.

I made sure to do this. Doesn't hurt that I own everything for 5th edition either

I did the survey. I figure that if you don't tell WotC your preferences, they can't know your preferences. Kind of funny to realize that I only play OD&D and 5E anymore and didn't mark anything in between...
I also put in a plug for Blackmoor as a setting (in the comments section) along with a wish for 5E Space (over Starfinder) or 5E Modern or 5E Wild West or other 5E rules variants.

I took the survey. I'd be really happy if they released a stripped-down version of 5E (much like the old basic lines). I also praised them for releasing OOP books in PDF and POD. All in all, I'm very happy with the direction WotC is moving in. My only gripe is that the 5E rules are just a smidgen too complex for my taste. An OD&D-style version of 5E would be awesome.

I really wish I'd thought to thank them for the ebook versions on DriveThruRPG when I took the survey. The very first playtest version of 5E was lite enough that I think this group would have liked them. I wish they'd stopped there and not monkeyed with them further.

I noted that I was interested in the settings "Greyhawk" and "Blackmoor/First Fantasy Campaign" (I doubt any current employee of Wisbros would know what FFC means), and expressed enthusiasm for any animated and/or live-action D&D shows. I should have given them a brain aneurysm by saying that I only played "Braunstein"!

I'd be really happy if they released a stripped-down version of 5E (much like the old basic lines). Apparently there is a new game called Dungeonesque that sounds a lot like what you describe. They have a white box version and one that looks kind of like the red box basic of old. Looks like some sort of 5E lite, but I haven't been able to peek inside of one and don't want to spend much money on it since it won't be AL legal. A thread on DF talks a little about it, if that helps, as does their kickstart page. www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=77620

Thanks for posting that tetramorph. I had yet to look into the 5ed rules. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it past the second page... blech. All of that blather on the first page could have been written as "Roll 3d6 in order, six times, once for each Ability Score. Pick a Class. Play."

Thanks tetramorph . I'm sorry, but I wasn't clear. Those free basic rules (and SRD) are actually what I was referring to. I don't own the hardcovers (I've read them though). Both are too fiddly for me. The hardcovers have the same core rules as the PDFs just with more weapons, armor, magic items, monsters, class options, etc. I enjoy 5E overall (it got me back into D&D after a long hiatus), but there is always room for improvement. Hosting a free pdf with almost the entire game therein is a real show of faith towards their fans and is a strong show of confidence in their product to boot. This decision is yet another thing WotC is doing right. Hard to complain about free!* *The irony of this statement is not lost on me.

The Dungeonesque is pretty much nothing more than a re-edited version of the basic rules you can get for free. So unless you have the cash and/or want the basic rules to look more like they had been edited some 30 years in the past (more columns per page, some art, worse layout imho), I'd recommend just playing with the basic rules as you won't miss out on anything. If you're into printed rules and want to use the basic rules, you can make a cover for these with the layered PDF you can download here: www.enworld.org/forum/rpgdownloads.php?do=download&downloadid=1088So when you have your basic rules printed, they'll look nice on the outside, too

The "basic" is about three times too long due to sheer fluff. But take a look at the other document I linked out to.

I was confused at first but then I realized that my adblocker ate your second link for some reason. I disabled it and then I saw it. Thanks for that link! It's well done. It will be handy at my next 5E game. Anyway, just a heads up that some may need to temporarily disable their adblocker to see it. EDIT: I attached the PDF to this post for those that want to check it out. condensed2.pdf (198.23 KB)

It was the "Condensed2" document that I was referring to... I agree that it's much better than the Ha$bro one, but the 5ed rule set as a whole just isn't for me.
