I'm looking for a mapping tool to make those old blue module maps Not exactly what you're looking for, but terribly cool nonetheless. You can also generate side views and cubes(!). But maybe this is more what you're looking for (select "oldschool D&D" from the drop down). I think the site requires a java plugin or some such thing.

Hi Foxroe: If you haven't run across it before, there is a d20 guide to Zothique floating around the web. Unofficial and unauthorized, but a good start for background on the subject. The file is available at The Eldritch Dark site (along with lots of other Smith-related material). Yep! I have that site bookmarked - it's where I grabbed all the stories and threw together my own "Tales of Zothique" PDF a few years back. I also have that d20 supplement. While I think that it's a great document, and it's clear that the author has a great affinity for CAS, it also seems that a few creative liberties were taken (unavoidable I'm sure) that are not to my taste. My goal is to harvest enough information to eventually create my own version of a map of the Last Continent since there was never an official map (none of the fan based ones seem right to me - even the Lin Carter one). I'd also like to come up with a random Zothique name generator, but that may be too ambitious...

Ah, in that case, Sharron and Jack will stroll down the back alley and scope out the rear in the same afore mentioned fashion. We're obviously not going to be able to get through the front without causing a scene. Somebody want to scope the roof out? OOC; Jack is now out of the picture... Just Sharron then...

If you recall, there is some discussion about it over here. And it is indeed a sweet little utility.

Sharron will ask the waiter/waitress about any gossip involving the clinic while we wait for the clinic to close, then we'll (as inconspicuously as possible) stake out the place for security measures (cameras, other entrances, night guard, etc.). Also, what time do the clinic and cafe close? Some time (about 1-2 hours) after the clinic closes to the public, Jack and I will scope out the externals. We'll split up and each cover two sides of the structure (at different times), by casually walking past and making observations, then continuing to the next block and circling back around to the cafe. I'll cover the front and left side, Jack will cover the right side and rear. We're looking for entrances, windows, surveillance equipment, and alarm systems. Once we settle on a plan, Sharron will relay all the info back to the ship. We should all keep in contact regularly, and have the van and a driver Logan standing by (idling ?) maybe a half-block up the street from the clinic. Any other ideas? Also, does anyone want to find a taller nearby building with roof access so we can scope out the roof of the clinic?

It's time once again for your daily encounters! This time your PCs are at sea off the treacherous, icy Broken Coast. What will they meet there? ... 2 crocodiles 3 crocodiles ... It seems strange to have crocodiles in an "icy" region, as they are typically only found in tropical latitudes. But then again, it is Hyperborea, so maybe they're mutant white crocodiles.

I also wrote this post in reply to this question back in 2013. There was a time when I would point someone to a particular clone of the original "rules" due to the unapproachability of obtaining the original rules , but that seems to be irrelevant now. The ORIGINAL rules are available now for a few dollars in PDF form, so that is where I will likely point most folks now. This is an interesting one. IMHO the clones can still serve a useful purpose. One of those purposes can be to present the original as a well-structured, well-indexed resource. Another can be to bring together the body of relevant material into one convenient place, rather than having it spread about. A third purpose can to refine the previous point by bringing contemporary material together. Despite the wealth of PDFs available today, it's still not so easy to pull together, say, all 1974 prints, or all 1975 prints of the original game. Another purpose can be meshing it all together into a more coherent whole, rather than a bunch of semi-disjointed stuff. If that's your thing. And yet another purpose can be to simply enjoy doing any of the above... Excellent points. There are those that seem to be put off by the organization of the original rules (though it never bothered me), so S&W/DD would be the way to go in such cases.

Whoa boy. Here goes.
S&W and Delving Deeper are pretty much the same with respect to the rules. S&W clings more to the rules as they evolved to something most people are used to, while DeDe (my own abbreviation) clings closer to a specific, solid interpretation of the original rules. They are both "clones" of the original rules and both excellent; just differing approaches.

Soooooo.... to answer your excellent question (it's honestly something that I think has been asked before, but never really answered well), the differences are negligible. Oh sure, someone will inevitably point out that rule A in this game states such and such, and it doesn't in the other... blah, blah, blah; but, in the end, the two games are so close enough to the original in spirit, that it really doesn't matter.
The point is the game, not the rules. Are your players having fun? Then the rules are good enough, regardless of where they came from.

Murder in the Place of Anubis, by Lynda S. Robinson, book one of the Lord Meren series, was an easy, but likeable read. Think Ellery Queen (in an official capacity) set against a backdrop of intrigue in the court of Tutankhamen. If you have ancient Egyptian elements in your campaign, it's a great source of digestible flavor (the vocabulary is not excessive).

I would think everyone would want to be in on it, but I supposed that's up to everyone! We should definitely have the ship on hot-standby though.

Triplanetary! Be warned: you'll likely be hunting down the rest of the Lensmen novels if you read it. Keep in mind the age of the story when you do read it - I think some are put off by the language and the "science" (it's pure pulp).

Poison gas – but only in a volcano, so no encounter! Geyser – only in a volcano, so no encounter! These don't necessarily need to be related to volcanic activity. The "geyser" could be a buried alien spacecraft venting steam, or maybe it's something not entirely water (green slime! ). The poisonous gas can be a "knock out" trap set by aliens/slavers/bandits/etc.

Just finished First Lensman, book 2 of the Lensman series. Fantastic. I can't believe that I have put off reading this series for so long - any more "pulpier" and I'd call it fresh-squeezed OJ. I also found it amusing that the author's portrayal of "American" politics and presidential elections in a 50-year old story is uncannily close to the modern perception of such things... the more things change, the more they stay the same! Galactic Patrol is definitely next on the list.
And now I have the growing urge to start a Traveller campaign...

Hmmm... when was the first mention of the link between Iuz and Iggwilv? The Gord novels? An excellent opportunity for you to dig into the source material! and =) Allan. Uh, uh. Nope. You're holding out on me, Grohe! I just know it! Edit: How did you come up with the list? The header looks like a search string...

Thanks, @myrkull . That would be a potentially interesting consideration for exploring the "real Iuz". However, in this creative exercise, I was referencing strictly Gygax's writings. ToEE was co-written by Mentzer, so I would not consider it an "original" source. FYI, foxroe , the original publication of Iuz in Dragon #67 is what @myrkull is referring to: ToEE simply repeats this original info on page 121. Allan. Ah, I remember this article! I also see that it was written by EGG in 1982. S4 was also published in '82, and then WG6 in '85. Hmmm... when was the first mention of the link between Iuz and Iggwilv? The Gord novels?

Geyser – only in volcanoes, so no encounter! "But Xathoqqua's fury reached deeply into the bowels of Hyperborea, corrupting the other-planar energies between the Lost Continent and Old Earth. Rivulets of extra-dimensional magma now run beneath Alus Mercury, hellishly heating the city's ancient cisterns..."
