COMBAT ROUND 2
Initiative is rolled: PCs 4, beast 1
The Eye of Thundera arrives on the scene and cleaves at the tentacles above with righteous fury! 6+1 = 7 and a tentacle is severed!!!
Servitor swings and hits (5+1=6) with his tulwar--he is getting good at this!--and is showered by a fine mist of green goo as the tentacle is separated from the body.
Thaimos attacks with his flail but swings wide (1+1=2).
Shadow waits for an opening, but is too cautious (2+1=3) and misses his opportunity.
Morale is checked. With 4 of its tentacles destroyed or incapacitated, the beast has had enough! It immediately pulls itself back up the shaft at its fastest possible speed, moaning and blubbering with pain, to lick its wounds and await easier prey.
All is calm. Your actions?

Fated to Die looks up from a stricken passenger and shouts:
"Contagion! THIS MAN HAS BLACK SPAWN ROT!!! Cover thy mouths, shield thine eyes - flee to safety back through the tunnel... a second's hesitation could cost you your life!!!"
Fated waves the crowd out the rear of the car while he signals his slaves to prepare to exit the other way, toward the overturned 1st class car, the other PCs, and the shaft.

Upon hearing those words, The Red Grat-alepranon will stride forward, covering his mouth and nose with some of his wrappings and withdrawing a dagger from beneath his wraps. He is now wearing his chainmail and deathmask helm.
'I am learned in the sciences of disease. I will need to remove this man from the area and treat him.' he intones in a deep, sepulchral voice.

Servitor of The Yellow Sign climbs down from the top of the carriage to join those standing at its ruined front. "Did any of you recognise that creature?"
I look around, re-assessing the area. Is there a ladder or other means of ascending the shaft? Are there any other features in the 30 foot circular chamber?

Breath now moves forward and enters the 1st class carriage. She looks around for any sorcerous-looking materials, but if she sees none she makes her way through to the other side.

Shadow waits for an opening, but is too cautious (2+1=3) and misses his opportunity. ...Your actions? The Shadow shakes his head in disgust at himself. After a few moments pause, where he looks up the shaft to make sure the monster doesn't come back, he stows his shield and flail when he believes they are safe... for the moment. Once that is done, the first thing he'll do is check to see if the spear that was thrown at the beast is lying on the ground somewhere. If it is, he'll pick it up to use later. Then he'll examine one of the severed tentacles to see if he has any knowledge of what the creature might have been.

THE EYE OF THUNDERA wipes the ichor from his great Sword of Omens and sheathes it on his back.
He approaches Servitor of the Yellow Sign and says, "You fight honorably yellow man. I am THE EYE OF THUNDERA. I didn't get a good look at the beast before it fled. Let's check this chamber for any other hiding places the accursed may strike from."
THE EYE OF THUNDERA aids Servitor in surveying the chamber.

I incline my head, then continue surveying the chamber, sword and shield ready.

Thaimos is on his knees, retching over the side of the carriage. The contents of his stomach spill wetly into the blackness below. He crawls weakly away from the side, and uncorks his wineskin. Thaimos takes a swig to wash the taste from his mouth, and soothe his throat.
He gets up, shaking, and straightens his clothing. It's obvious this man is not used to combat. His weapons are more of the "irregular militia/home defense" variety, not the arms and armor of a rough and ready adventurer.
He looks down at the severed tentacles, and curiosity gets the better of him. "Anyone h-have a s-scalpel?" he asks shakily. "I want to f-find out what's inside that thing."

The coach class passengers exit through the back into the baggage car at the rear of the train. This car is dry and relatively undamaged; it seems like a safe place for them to rest and await rescue.
The faintly-lit coach car is now empty except for Red, Fated, and a frightened-looking Purple Man who is convinced he suffers from the black spawn rot. You may do with your patient as you please...
Meanwhile the situation in 1st-class is not good. There are many injured, dead, and dying. Some of them may yet be saved by timely first aid... Breath, the most obvious "sorcerous-looking materials" are the Green Men themselves (they would make fine sacrificial victims for the correct ritual). But everything is dark, twisted, and confused in the 1st-class; a more thorough search would require a light source and some effort to sift through the broken glass, debris, and wounded Green Men.
Meanwhile in the tunnel below the Shaft the situation is thus: It's less damp here; it appears the tunnel slopes ever so slightly down in either direction to allow water to drain, thus it's merely muddy here instead of puddles. The monorail engine has been completely destroyed; scraps of twisted metal and smoldering wreckage all that's left. Presumably the crew members aboard were killed instantly. The track has been destroyed as well. There is no ladder or other obvious method to climb the Shaft. The stonework is rough, with some cracks and handholds, but it would be a very dangerous climb. You remember the White Man saying that workers were lowered down the shaft in a dangling bucket-like contraption. There is a heavy metal door on the right-hand wall, with the keyhole of what appears to be a sturdy, high-quality lock. You also notice some small sconce-like protrusions at regular intervals about 8 feet off the ground.
Shadow you now possess an obsidian-tipped spear that fell from the beast's wound as it made its escape. The severed tentacles have the appearance and texture of raw calamari, but with a distinctly unpleasant odor of strong ammonia.

The Shadow hears the moans and cries of blues coming from the first class car. He turns his head to the car and stares at it for a moment.
Exhaling a low sigh of regret for those of lesser importance, he walks over to the sconce-like protrusion nearest the metal door to examine it more closely. With his height, it doesn't take much effort.
After he is satisfied with his inquiry into the sconce, he'll examine the door more closely and even try the handle to see if it is really locked.

Breath of New Moon ignores the piteous cries of the wounded, and exits out the front of the carriage.
Once outside she takes a look around, and goes over to investigate the heavy metal door with the Shadow. If the door is locked, she looks for weakness in the door (such as where it may be possible to remove it by its hinges), and if it looks like she can get a good grip on it she will put down her Glaive and try to pull it open (with Shadows assistance if he wishes). If this doesn't work, she'll try to break it down instead by brute force.

The wall sconce is a concave piece of reflective metal, with what appears to be a wick in the center. The door is definitely locked. The door is heavy duty and appears to open inward. You feel somewhat nervous with the yawning void of the Central Shaft directly overhead...

"Does anyone have a torch?" If there are no affirmative answers, I'll try to use debris + clothing from the dead to make one, then light it on the burning engine (assuming it's still aflame.) I'll hand a burning torch to the Jale man to put into a sconce near the door, assuming he's found no other use for the sconces.

The Red Grat-alepranon (lantern) and The Eye of Thundera (6 torches) were the only two with the foresight to pack a light source. The wall sconces don't appear designed for holding torches; they have a sleek, recessed design with a wick-like element protruding from a small opening.

Thaimos hops down into the carriage and grabs his stuff from the baggage compartments, being careful to cover his mouth. Outside the wreckage, he begins to strap on his plate mail on and makes his way over to the metal door.
"Shadow, Moon," he begins. "We should leave this area. It's not safe."
His gaze drifts toward the Central Shaft on occasion, wondering why it makes him shudder. Perhaps it is the yawning abyss that continues ever upward that frays his nerves.

Fated to Die: "Baggage car? Ah!"
Fated makes the Sign of the Polyhedron at the 'sick' man, looks uncomfortably at Red, and then back to the man - "Good luck!"
Fated signals to his slaves and makes for the baggage car. He looks inside quickly, then motions toward any three bags that look most likely to belong to wealthy Green Man passengers -
"My bags - there, there, and there! Hand them to my slaves quickly, I have potent blams within to defeat the Rot. Quickly!"
He waves at the huddled passengers to quickly give him the bags. Hearing Breath crash open the door outside, he knows where he will be escaping to...

The Red Grat-alepranon gazes impeturbably at the scurrying Fated. As the charlatan passes by, The Red Grat-alepranon sonorously intones in a whisper: "I know that you are a liar and thief. -The Thing That Rots You- knows. It, and I... are watching. Stay away..." He makes a few motions with one hand in a mystical manner.
He will then exit the car, collect his slave and move to where the rest of the mobile survivors are collecting.

I light several of the ensconced wicks with my makeshift brand. As you bring the open flame to the sconce, there is a loud pop and flash of light, as though of burning phosphorus! (Save vs. dragon's breath: 12, 5, 11, 16) Servitor, Breath, and Shadow are (temporarily??) blinded, deafened, and dazzled! The Eye of Thundera reflexively shields his eyes and is unharmed. He sees that all dozen of wall lights flare up a split second after the first is lit. The 30' area under the Shaft is now lit bright as day.

Hearing Breath crash open the door outside, he knows where he will be escaping to... It is impossible to tell the color of a bag's owner from its appearance. Nevertheless, your slaves grab a matching set of 3 burgundy-colored duffel bags that appear to be made of a high-quality, vinyl-like material.

It is good to have such power among us, skeleton woman. My name is The Shadow Of The Evermore." He does not extend a hand, but nods his head slightly in reverence. (Ummm... obviously, this was done before the flash bangs went off in our faces!)

As the pop and flash assault his senses, The Shadow drops into a low crotch, closing his eyes and drawing his dagger. He tries to steady himself while he clears his ears, working his jaw to try and restore his hearing.

Fated to Die: (to the crowd) "I must first tend to the heroes who vanquished the Beast - likely they have been exposed to unclean emanations. I shall return!"
Fated and his slaves gather the bags and depart to join the assembling PCs.
"Greetings, heroes! My name is Fated to Die, for aren't we all? I recognize you from a dream, and my motto is, 'Follow your dreams!' You blinded ones can't yet see me, but would remember me from your own dream... I am the gorgeous one! My companions names are 'Slave' and 'Slave' - they are my property and live only to serve."
(eyes the open doorway) "I suggest we get moving soon - the rabble in the train is panicky and prone to desperate actions. Looks dangerous in here... perhaps Undead Red should lead the way?" Fated lifts an eyebrow at Red Grat-alepranon and gives his biggest smile.

After satisfying himself that everyone is out of the train car, the Sovereign Mask of All Who See readjusts his copper mask and makes his way back to the tunnel, observing the commotion, unsure which side--the fighters or the plebeians to--to approach.

The Red Grat-alepranon takes his dagger into his hand and intones at Fated: "For me to lead by your suggestion requires that I take some of your blood. If you are willing to undergo the sacrifice, I will begin the ritual of Foul Ethers Summoning..."
