Well, I played OD&D by-the-book for some time, according to Philotomy's "play it as it is". Sooner or later a lot of issues arises and you basically have to house-rule this game. Cool! My hat is off, sir. If I may? How did you handle initiative, missile ranges, the elf class? Within the presented rules matrix, I mean. Off the top of my head, these are the things I house-ruled in 1975 because I don't recall any rules-based presentation on same.

I've participated in discussions on some 5e forums and they are freaking rules nazis. Try to introduce creative interpretations or rules bending and they unleash on you. I've often pondered the apparent correlation between number of rules and an increasing hardcore attitude about doing things BtB. I know there are people who like strict adherence to written rules and to each their own, it just isn't how I like to do things. A session filled with managing a spreadsheet and strict, complex PC builds just isn't my idea of a fun evening.

Truth be told, MOST of us probably houserule our OD&D to some extent. I would be skeptical of anyone telling me they played OD&D, particularly the TLBB, "as is" with no house-ruling. I've been playing this game since it was a game and I've never seen campaign without some homebrew mixed in.

To play OD&D is to house rule. I'm in complete agreement with this statement! As I see it, that's the fun of the game.

In the old days, folks with a new take on D&D published "D&D Variant" articles in Dragon magazine. I've obviously got nothing against retroclones, I'm a big fan in fact, but here comes the "but!" ... I've always thought many (not all, everyone put your flame guns away) could have been released as campaign supplements in the vein of GH and BM supplement/changed the boxed set rules.

IMC nearly all dragons are tan with brown markings and breathe fire. Gold dragons are rumored to exist but so rarely appear in draconian form (which is indeed gold and not tan/brown) the common man believes they don't exist.

Dawns on me what a bad player I am. I have a book on openings floating around, I should have checked it before the game began. I wouldn't stress too much over it. I'm a mediocre player, nobody in Chess Club in high school wanted to play against me. ETA: because I didn't present a challenge.

For this campaign, I almost left out the thief class and was considering giving everyone their skills that would rise in level with their chosen class level. No adjustments based on race, but rather using the thief dex based adjustments from The Strategic Review. That away you can have a Conan type. As to Paladins and Lawful characters, they would have the abilities, but would not mean they have to use them, choices to make use of certain skills could have negative implications depending on context. But that is another topic/thread. Kunz mentioned this once upon a time, an idea he never approached EGG with during the development of the GH supplement for OD&D. I found this online and thought it interesting. Since it has similar thoughts to what you had here, I thought I'd pass it along. I call it the Thief Para-Class since it's added on to a PC's existing class. You may find some good idea for your own campaign!

For extra flavor, put a setting appropriate planet name in front, such as: Arcturan Spiked Elk, Efation Howling Cheetah, Centauran Winged Leech.

I read Splinter of the Minds Eye which was THE Star Wars sequel (until the actual sequel) before Empire Strikes Back came out. When I went to see the Star Wars sequel for the first time I was very confused, it was nothing like the book. Agreed. I bought that one hot off the press and was surprised by the difference both in tone and the treatment of Luke and Leia (before they were brother and sister). I was in college at the time.

One page PDF, two-column table, d36 chart inspired by various sci-fi games, tv, and films. Roll once for each column and you have your encounter with a description-animal such as: spiked elk
howling cheetah
winged leechThis is a first version and it's freely offered. Use it, reproduce it, publish it; it's hardly anything I can claim as an original idea. drive.google.com/open?id=1lGsRld-c3emil9TmvbAbU_pSbvnoR26q

I assume that Rafe had to input the names of the people who are playing, and only they can make moves. I moved, but it doesn't show up on the graphic above. My move shows for me, so you must be correct in your surmise. There was a button I was supposed to press to make my move, that's why I was having my initial problems.

I'm not able to make a move. I can pick up the piece and move it to a square, but it reverts to its home position when I let go of it.
Never mind, I was being a dolt! lol

Con: loss of night vision (and infravision for demi-humans if you allow it in your campaign).

I have Delving Deeper and read through it, though I haven't played it the system appears very much just OD&D with the alternative combat system. I'm not seeing the Chainmail stuff. You may have an earlier version of DD. The latest version, Fourth edition, I believe may be more to your liking.

I tried one or two episodes of some I've been recommended. I've never subscribed to any and don't currently listen to any of them.

I didn't have a copy Chainmail when I bought OD&D in 1975, nor had I seen one. I didn't buy a copy until the late '90s.
