i’m not a fan of labels, so I’ll harken back to a definition of pornography I heard way back in the ‘60s.
“I can’t define it, but I’ll know it when I see it.”

The D&D movie has now been officially pushed back four weeks, from March 2023 to April. We’re getting close to two years from the original scheduled release of July 2021.

Well done, Simon. You’ve really elevated DD to a higher plane. Congratulations! I can’t wait for 5.

Those of us old enough are also cynical enough to know that … I’m in my mid-60’s. At what age can I expect the cynicism to begin? At any rate, I don’t want to make trouble here. I will ease up on the movie talk for a while. Take care.

My apologies if this discussion upset anyone. I merely wanted to share my joy and excitement for the upcoming film.
I’m really looking forward to it, but I’ll try and tone it down a bit out of respect for my fellow gamers.

Okay, rustic313 ... I took a quick screenshot of the deleted material. This the bottom of p. III-21 and the top of III-22. I have included material not deleted for reference, to allow you to see where the deleted block appeared in relation to the existing material in the latest print. This screenshot is for educational purposes only and not intended to defraud or otherwise deny profit to TSR, WotC, Hasbro or any other entity or individual (living or dead), nor is it intended as a challenge to the IP of any of the aforementioned entities whether corporate or individual (each or severally)..

My brother works in sfx and was due to start working on the new D&D movie this year. Postponed due to rona. Says his boss has read the script and said it's "quite funny". Am trying to imagine a high fantasy Guardians of the Galaxy. Nice! Insider information. Really cool, thank you for sharing this. I would love to hear any further tidbits you can toss our way.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if the movie was a reboot of the TV series. I mean the Jumanji reboot was pretty successful, wasn't it? ...actually, that would be pretty awesome. The “Jumanji” reboot(s) actually came to mind when the idea of a light-hearted D&D film popped up. Jumanji did a fine job of mixing the player and character dichotomy of role-playing games.

And how can it be a reboot? I was under the impression that all of the earlier movies were unrelated stories—unless they're actually planning on remaking the original movie?!?! The first two were vaguely related, with a secondary antagonist from the first film becoming the primary antagonist in the second. Same world/campaign and same kingdom, but separated by an unknown amount of time (though one gets the impression its been a large number of years). The third was something different entirely. All three films had interesting ideas behind them but fell flat in the telling of the story. With a decent budget and acting, and a director with a strong hand on the wheel? I think a D&D could be the total package. Unfortunately, however, I believe the property simply isn't taken seriously and I attribute this to either or both of two factors ... (1) the success of the D&D cartoon. I know that seems to contradict me, but a successful cartoon cemented this IP as "for kids" and, in the years following PJ's LotR series of films with their serious "gritty" tone? This is likely a mark against D&D (if this perception is as widespread as I believe it to be). (2) the lack of success of the major release film and its two direct-to-video/made-for-tv sequels. This property is snakebit and it'll be tough to get real talent involved in the project. Not impossible, freshman directors and young stars-to-be have surprised and entertained us many times before. But? If I were rolling the dice on this one I would be betting light.

I'm guessing the "reboot" thing is to distance it from the previous D&D movies. One may well assume and also ... good move, that.

Traveller has a bunch of skills that don't seem to work very well. I usually used these when role-playing didn't provide a clear resolution to the situation. Even then, I typically modified the die roll based on the player's "performance" and the appropriateness of the attempted action for the PC in question.

Since it's still in such an early phase of development, there are no plot or cast details available. Similarly, the series does not appear to have been sold to a network yet.OK, talk is still vague but here is the latest on the alleged television series in the works. screenrant.com/dungeons-dragons-tv-show-derek-kolstad-john-wick/

(Were there any comic books yet at this point?) I worked in a toy department that first horrible Christmas season after the movie came out (shudder). I could have sold out of peanut brittle if it would have been stamped with something like Olde Dagobah Peanut Brittle: A Skywalker Favorite!, for crying out loud.
If memory serves me well, we were also selling Marvel comic book adaptations of the Star Wars film.

Helps that B5 and JMS are great. [bunny trail] Agreed. B5 nearly spoiled me with it's visual novel approach to story telling. JMS actually had an idea for a story he wanted to tell. So many shows which could have benefited from a similar format (e.g. ST:VOY, BSG-remade, ENT/ST:ENT) felt like they just meandered around. While there is nothing wrong with episodic stories, sometimes a premise just begs for a long-term goal.[/bunny trail]

Like the guy, but he must be hard-up for work. Heh! That calls to mind a quote by Jeremy Irons. When asked about his appearance in Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie (2000) in light of his impressive acting credentials, his reply was a shrug and "I needed the money."

I didn't mean to imply that any of Gary or Rob's material is necessary or even desired as part of a Blackmoor campaign drawing from the 1971-77 era. You didn't ... and no reasonable person took it that way. Don't worry about it.
