Another quick question : Say the group acquires some hirelings.. do I as the DM roll up full character sheets for the hirelings (race/class, etc)? Do they have a certain amount of hit points? Depends are they torched bearers? caring for horses? etc... any non combat I wouldn't bother. On the other hand if they will participate in combat you just need AC and HP unless an ability is exceptionally high there's no need to track it beyond bonus experience for advancement. If you want them fleshed out a bit more then go ahead and roll them up.

Great stuff. Always inspiring to see other ref's stuff like this. What hex paper resource did you use for this?

What people don't understand is that Geoffrey has a process he needs to go through in order to properly write material

Thank you guys for the help! I have one more question that I haven't heard anyone really talk about in any of the reviews or writings on the game. In other versions of D&D, let's say your character is walking and then the floor caves out underneath you, you have to make a Dexterity check VS a difficulty (let's say 15 in this case) to see if you survive.. Does this still apply in OD&D? That's the best thing with OD&D you can use that mechanic if you want. You could just make it a saving throw. In my games I tend to use a d6 for most resolution tasks as that is a precendent in the rules. Take for example this sentence on traps that seems to have been lost in later editions: "Traps are usually sprung by a roll or a 1 or a 2 when any character passes over or by them. Pits will open in the same manner." From Underworld and wilderness pg 9 You could rule that the floor only gives way on a 2 in 6 or if it does give way any character with a Dex of 9+ only has a 2 in 6 chance of falling in, you could have a character roll 3d6 under his score or 4d6. The flexibility is the strength of the original version. Find something you prefer as a DM and use that.

Some short answers How do attack rolls work in OD&D? -- they work the same d20 attack roll. The AC goes from 9 to 2. Positives/Negatives of using the "All weapons roll d6 Damage" rule? I like it but my players have needed some adjusting. Most of us come from a B/X, 1e/2e background. I found it gives less focus on players looking at numbers and more picking a weapon that fits with a concept. I had to remind them the in D&D pre WoTc especially OD&D that combat is abstract and to treat it as such. Some still grumble a bit. Here is some suggested downloads Philtolomy's MusingsI've uploaded a Character Sheet Attachments:odd_cs3.pdf (27.51 KB)

I'd also suggest Labyrinth Lord if you aren't worried about the single saving throw.

I'm biased to Delving Deeper, but second choice would be S&W white box.

Still haven't bothered to play it beyond the box set adventure they put out. I've got the books on my shelf collecting dust. I'd play it if somebody ran it where I wouldn't play 3e or 4e (4e being the only version I would edition bash). If I was forced to run it I'd use the basic rules, cut out the 4e-ism I don't like. Maybe allow a class or two from the PHB (why does every edition always barbarian = berserker? barbarian is a culture not a class ). My opinion it's the best attempt by WoTC at their house ruled version of d&d (and isn't every version since OD&D just house rules). But there's nothing ground breaking in it for me to want to run it that bad.

Strangely enough I don't make a lot of dungeons it really depends on what my group explores. The two dungeons I used recently weren't of my own design. I ran my group through some of barrow maze and that was fun. I also used dungeon of the unknown, with that I didn't do any prep work. I just used the very brief room description and made up what I thought it meant on the spot. I wanted to do it that way as an exercise in imagination and spontaneous creativity. I also didn't write any of it down so that every time I use that dungeon it will be completely different. My favorite part was sometimes coming up with something completely nonsensical, so that when I had one of my players remark "d**n these old school dungeons being so non sensical" in frustration. I made the next room even more nonsensical than the last they were in .

Yes Lodoss was based on someone's D&D game Menzter basic. You can google and find the character sheets. It's about the only anime I can watch as I'm not an anime fan at all. As to the topic....so many great artists it's hard to choose, but since I was introduced to the game with B/X I'll go with Otus. His artwork really awestruck me. This was one of my favorites you can hear the petty arguing followed by the ensuing spell battle between them.

What I did for my home game is made my own DD booklet. I used the text version, put in my house rules/changes. Then made a booklet and printed out for my players. I find that the easiest way to make changes for what I wanted. This way I don't have a separate handout for house rules.

I think Supplement I: GREYHAWK is awesome if it is treated as a grab-bag full of options that are to be cherry-picked at will. Agreed. My OD&D games tend to use bits and pieces from each, such as OD&D HD progression and spells but adding in the thief class option. Best of both worlds. That's why I love OD&D making it your own. So customizable.

No I'l take a look there. There's some threads over on DF about putting it in GH. I think I even started one at one point. You'll have to search. I'd do the following: Start the players in Northwick, in the Principality of Ulek. There are two rivers which meet there, which is similar to Kelvin in B10. The players will travel east along the river, then south along a tributary (which you would need to create) to Sukiskyn. The area north of the road to Eastpass would be analogous to the hills which contain the Gold Mine, Xitaqa, and events in Chapter 3. I would place Rifllian further west of Northwick, near joining of the Old River and the river flowing out of Northwick. Eventually, the players would follow the Old River north. I would place Threshold, and the corresponding Lake Windrush, up that river a bit. Very "frontier town" feel there. There's no "perfect" place for it, but I feel like this location is good enough where you wouldn't have to massage the maps too much to make it fit. For reference, the map of Ulek I am looking at is here: ghmaps.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Ulek-Principality.jpgI've also done an overlay, to scale, of The Map of the Karameikos from B10 onto that map. It's not perfect, like I said, but it gives you an idea of what it would be like. Warning...this would be a spoiler for players! Thanks I'll look this over. I was looking at using the Bandit kingdoms but this might work better. The second link doesn't seem to work.

I really don't see any need to houserule DD, personally, but I think I'd just add a fun thing or two like 'shields shall be splintered' and 'helmets shall be dashed'. I think the idea that the older rules being flawed is kind of a misconception... But of course all of the work that waysoftheearth did to 'clarify' certain things in the '74 rules may kind of fog my vision of that. As opposed to 'flawed' I might interject the word 'slim' or perhaps 'purposefully vague'. But I wouldn't say 'flawed'. But ya know what? Houserule if ya wanna... It's fun! Still, DD seems very, very playable 'out of the box' in my opinion. Agreed I don't have very many house rules. I could easily play it as is.

Interesting review. Personally I like the fact that OD&D/DD needs house rules. I started with Modvay/cook BX then on to AD&D and house ruled those but I found it harder to house rule only because there are more rules to deal with. I find it easier to add then to take away. Besides anything added after OD&D is just someones house rules I'm not sure what he found archaic, it's written much more clearer than the original booklets.

Hmmm. My local game store guy has asked me to officially run 5E D&D Adventurer's League sessions at the store. He said that he knows I'm an OD&D guy and that it's okay if I run the game without minis and totally in an old-school style, as long as I follow the offical adventures the store is supposed to run. Part of me is honored, part is sort of nervous since I don't run public games much and I'd rather it not be in the middle of the week (Wednesday evenings) since I have work the next day. I guess it would be a great opportunity to demonstrate to others how D&D can be enjoyed without making it a tactical miniatures thing. If I do this, does that make me a traitor to the OD&D cause? Yes sorry you can only play od&d you'll need to do the right thing and ban yourself from your own board.
