...to inspire the mood of your entire campaign.
Why that artist?
How would the artist's style affect characters in the campaign? FREX, in a campaign inspired by the art of Our Lord Erol Otus, those not wearing grotesque headgear would obviously be looked at askance.
Is there anything about the artist's style that might inspire particular house-rules? FREX, in a campaign inspired by The Bright Prince Jeff Dee, all adventurer's might have a minimum strength of 13.
And, although I used two classic D&D artists as exemplars, no need to limit yourself along those lines...

My South Province campaign was hugely inspired by Mark Oakley's Thieves & Kings. Because of that, I used NPCs with big back stories, lots of secrets that unfolded slowly, and secret places that only some characters could get to.

Unsurprisingly, my imagined world is largely inspired by Henry Justice Ford.

With my games, it's also pretty narrowly defined: My D&D is always half Hal Foster (Prince Valiant), half Yutaka Izubuchi (Record of Lodoss War).

My OD&D campaigns are Erol Otus.
My AD&D campaign (starting next month) is Dave Trampier.

Yes, but it's Japanese Animation. It's quite old, now, too. I do love it, but be prepared for weapons the size of small cars in some instances.
If you don't mind Anime, it's definitely worth a watch!

Yes Lodoss was based on someone's D&D game Menzter basic. You can google and find the character sheets. It's about the only anime I can watch as I'm not an anime fan at all. As to the topic....so many great artists it's hard to choose, but since I was introduced to the game with B/X I'll go with Otus. His artwork really awestruck me. This was one of my favorites you can hear the petty arguing followed by the ensuing spell battle between them.

Greg Bell! *dodges tomato* Imagine the fun of a campaign where it's almost impossible to distinguish between dwarves, gnomes, elves, and goblins! Serious answer: I'd have to go with Erol Otus if we mean TSR artists. If any artist is alright, maybe one of the following: Moebius, Ivan Bilibin, Vsevolod Ivanov. Regarding Record of Lodoss War... I generally don't like anime or anime imagery much at all (and living in Japan I'm virtually drowning in it), but this series is solid and is so deeply classic D&D. Fighter, cleric, magic-user, elf (who fights and throws spells, race as class obviously), dwarf form a party and go on a quest. Since it's a bit older, it manages to avoid some of the more obnoxious (in my opinion) modern anime things. As noted above, it's based on the transcripts of D&D sessions with a group of Japanese players in the early 80's. These kinds of transcripts were often published and became a bit of a fad for a time, and might be the link between table top games (which never really caught on here) and early video game RPGs like Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior/Quest, etc.

Caspar David Friedrich has some amazingly evocative paintings. I’ve used several of them. And one of my absolute favorites, Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog:

This was one of my favorites you can hear the petty arguing followed by the ensuing spell battle between them. Yeah, it's from 1990/1991, and it comes with the isssues of Japanese animation from back in the day, but it's nearly the only fantasy anime that actively tries and manages to tell a real story, and doesn't at any point deflate into the usual "child-like women being violated by overly masculine, sexually deviant demons". I actually like Lodoss War for other reasons than just the original anime, though - the mangas are really, really well done, with "Lady of Pharis" being the single best epic-fantasy comic book of the last two decades. (Perhaps together with Mike Mignola's take on the Lankhmar series. But other than that, these two series are really alone on top.) I wrote a few pieces on Lodoss, and on another comic series called "Northlanders", back in 2010, for Havard's Blackmoor blog. blackmoormystara.blogspot.de/2010/01/rafaelthe-lodoss-war.htmlblackmoormystara.blogspot.de/2010/01/northlanders.htmlBoth articles ARE relevant in the context of our current topic - I explain their significance for my Blackmoor games, and the LFC project, there. Now, another artist that had a huge influence on me was Shotaro Ishinomori - the guy that painted the old Zelda comics for the Nintendo Power mmagazine. zeldawiki.org/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_A_Link_to_the_Past_%28Comic%29The old comics were just rereleased by Viz in the US... And I bought two copies right away.

Nice to hear Chris Achilleos, he is definitely one of my favorite artists. Gary Chalk would be a good choice as well. For a medieval game: Howard Pyle. To depict opulence and decadence Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha.

I've always found appeal in older artist's work such as Charles E. Brock and Howard Pyle.
A modern artist worth mentioning might be Howard David Johnson. He does some cool stuff.

I just got a couple PDFs from D&D Classics: Mystara Gazeteers. I have only recently became interested in the world. I will have to put in the name of Clyde Caldwell: The Shadow Elves and The Grand Duchy of Karameikos.
