I've just played three games of Citadel of Blood, the old SPI dungeon crawler. This game still remains my personal favorite dungeon crawl board game. My long time wargaming buddy and I have decided to adapt these dungeon tiles for use in a DM-less OD&D game. I think it will be a nice pairing.

It was a friend's birthday today. Spent the afternoon playing Mystery Rummy - Murders in the Rue Morgue, and then a few tournaments of Ivanhoe (GMT). Good times drinking some good beer as well.

As I seem to recall the Checkered Demon once remarking: "Beer: wet and good."
Or, to paraphrase the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: "Beer will get you through times of no games better than games will get you through times of no beer."

Father Christmas brought "modern" soldiers and tanks to my boy's stocking this Christmas! (I wonder how he knew what my boy and I liked so much? That guy really is amazing.)
So we played our "toy war game" afresh with modern soldiers and TANKS! Came up with rules for rolling up accuracy of tank fire which were really fun.
Order of play:
First turn: Move / Melee (if possible, we assumed bayonettes) Second turn: Move / Range / Melee All subsequent turns: Move / Engine (tank) / Range / Melee
Set came with flags so we played it "capture the flag" style for end game goal. Really helped make it fun!
Went back and revised our medieval toy soldier rules accordingly.
We've been playing both "modern" and "ancient" back and forth.
Lots of fun!

One of my long time wargaming pals has a son who is 18 now and ready to take the plunge into heavier wargames. I taught him Unconditional Surrender: Case Blue! and he loved it, so now we're gearing up to play the 'big brother' game of Unconditional Surrender! World War 2 in Europe (a new-ish European Theater of Operations game). There really is nothing like that feeling of passing on the hobby, whether RPG's or wargames - it's great to see a young person excited by something "old school."

BattleTech, 3025 era, over the holiday. There enough players that we have to break into 2 games of 5 players each. Lots of fun including a failed Death-from-Above.

I just compiled 4 years' worth of spaceship combat gaming and created a roster. It includes the status of the vessels and the game used to play the battles. The games I used were Full Thrust Lite, Starmada Compendium, and Starmada Nova. In case anyone is interested you can check out the roster here.

Indeed, it sucks to be a crew in a small ship. The Northampton is also pretty small. I don't use naval ship designations in my game, but they'd be equivalent to frigates. You can can my spaceship write-ups here. My NATO/ANZAC spaceships are based on the Terran Republic starships from Cold Navy. My Chinese and Russian ships are a mix of Cold Navy's Mauridian Empire, and some Battlefleet Gothic (Eldar and Ork) ships.

I'm going to start posting my battle reports on this board instead of linking it to another forum. I'll post one tonight or tomorrow.

Invasion 1066 from Revolution Games. The Battle of Hastings. A Norman victory.
Blitz, a World in Conflict from Compass Games. All of World War II at a global scale. An Anglo-French Alliance victory.
Slaughterhouse from Against the Odds. The initial German invasion of Russia in 1941-early 1942. A Soviet victory.
Defiance on Hill 30 from MMP's Paratrooper, but using the Minden Retro rules. Colonel Shanley's force, cut off behind German lines, faces a major counterattack. An American victory.

Played Ogre and lost as I had seven 1:1 attacks at the end of the game, needing only one to succeed to immobilize the ogre. Could not roll a 5 or a 6

I got together with a new dude at a dive-ish bar this past Sunday eve for some games (it was not a date). We just played some lighter games, but it is fun to have a few drinks and play a variety of quick games
Played: Battleline (GMT) twice, Roma 2/Arena (Queen games), Machi Koro with Harbor Exp, and 8 minute empire.

Haven't been playing too much lately, besides simplistic boardgames like Ticket to Ride and Splendor.
Lately I've been starting up painting minis to play Frostgrave. Working on a couple warbands and then hoping to rope some friends into playing.

Pic from tonight's game, Medwar Sicily by Worthington Games (Richard Berg design). Pretty straightforward wargame if you have played a few. Only about 8 pages of rules. Uses some cards but not card driven. No CRT, uses 6 sided dice for combat resolution (hit on a 6 for infantry , and a 5 or 6 for armor or mechanized). Some fun strategy to be had.

I played the Magic: The Gathering miniature game. The miniatures and game board would also work well for rpgs (I'm thinking of Carcosa). I also played Ghost Stories. My group played this before, but we got trounced last time.

I just finished up a game of Warriors of God by MMP, where I played the French. My wargaming pal was beating me so badly by the end of turn 9 that I conceded.

I attended a boardgame meetup in S Seattle yesterday and gamed all day with a new to me group. There were 8 people there which made for some interesting 'large group' games. They were lighter games , but to me the most interesting/fun included: A german card based game called 6 nimmt! www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/432/6-nimmt - I actually won this game maybe that's why I liked it Also enjoyed a game called 'Joker marbles' (also goes by other names) sort of a Sorry variant with multiple decks of playing cards and an odd looking board stores.wizardwoodworks.com/marbles-jokers/

Today I met up with a local board gaming group and played Codenames, Backgammon, Ivanhoe (GMT),7 Wonders duel and 7 wonders (regular game). I was pretty hung over but it was a fun afternoon/day.
My most recent purchases are Blood & Sand (Worthington Games), A House Divided (2e used copy GDW), Haggis (a 2-3 player card game), and Hive (pocket)

I have the France 1940 scenario for Unconditional Surrender underway on Vassal. It's great fun so far. Not only is my young opponent unafraid of the 40 page rulebook, he volunteered to play the French! Good kid.
