Hmm interesting, didn't know this! I was looking at the old Avalon Hill games "Caesar's Legions." Going to Board Game Geek to find out what references in the AH General's magazine there were about the game, I noticed that CL had been based on an older game called "Eagles" published by GDW in 1974. Caesar’s Legions (1975) Revised 1976 Prior existing published design redesigned by Avalon Hill Designed by Loren K. Wiseman Development by Don Greenwood

I played War of the Ring (Fantasy Flight) 1e w/ Expansion yesterday. I was the Free Peoples and pushed the ring toward Mordor nearly without incident. Meanwhile, the Shadow broke through winning his second siege attempt of the Woodland Realms and picking up a city points in Gondor and Rohan. An earlier attempt to sack the Woodland Realms failed and the Witch King slain, thanks in part to Legolas and Gimli. On the last turn, I advanced the ring to the Mordor track, but Helm's Deep along with Gandalf, Boromir, and a hobbit fell in a valiant defense. Minas Tirith and Dol Amroth, more lightly defended, fell easily on that same turn and the Shadow won a military victory. War of the Ring is one of the best designed games, ever. Ah, man, it is brilliant. I get a 4-player game in about once a month. Didn’t know (or forgot) that you were into it. Want to join in sometime?

Definitely. We should get something on the calendar after the holidays. I've never played the 4-player version and would like to check it out.
One of the many, many things I like about the game is in how often the variances in the game, as compared to the book, seem so viable.

I did finally finish my SPI War of the Ring (1977) Campaign game. It ran about 12 hours and ended on turn 19 with a Fellowship victory (Frodo took off the ring and cast it into Mount Doom). The game created a great narrative as per usual.

Spent most of this evening playing Up Front at a gaming bar www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/586/frontWe did among others, the scenario with the mortar(ordinance). East Front Germans vs Russians. I was the Germans and the attacker in the scenario. My mortar man got taken out by a sniper while I was fording a stream with that squad and the mortar gets removed/lost in that case. There are a lot of people in the greater Seattle area that actively play this game. We are trying to organize an 8 person 'City Fight 501' tournament from The General magazine at some point.

What the smack is a "gaming bar"?
(Hoping that it's exactly what it sounds like...)

I haven't played that, but I've looked at it too--looks like fun! Yes! I've never really wargamed before, but I have read through Chainmail. I'm hoping to pick it up in the next couple of weeks. Some guys in my D&D group online are interested, so I've been looking to set up a table on Tabletop Simulator online. Works much better than I thought it would. On my walk the other day I was daydreaming of turning Bolt Action into an RPG as well. My D&D group was far more excited than I expected when I shared my ideas. We'll have to give it a go in the near future

What the smack is a "gaming bar"? (Hoping that it's exactly what it sounds like...) It's what you think That is the new model here, a place that sells games and also has a game library and several tables set up and beer on tap. My favorite haunt www.rttgamepub.com/There is also www.afktavern.com/, and www.gammaraygamestore.com/ and 3 or 4 others

Awesome. With that definition, I realized we also have a single example right here in Minnesota: the Fantasy Flight Games Center!I didn't even think about it at first, since when we game there it's usually on Sunday afternoons... AND they have surprisingly good food... I think I may have found my retirement business.

There are also gaming bars which are chiefly bars and don’t sell games but have a ton of them (or you can bring your own) for you to play. Guthrie’s in Chicago is one.

A pic from this evening's game. This was Belisarius's War (533-534 AD), The Roman's attempt to reconquest North Africa from the Vandals. The Huns and Moors are involved and can switch sides during the game. Card driven, the sister game to Caesar's War from up thread. I liked this one as well, perhaps slightly better than CW. More use of fleets and a bit more overall strategy. There was some annoying errata that had to be figured out at the table and researched/decided upon. A fun $12 game. I won as the barbarians, but not until the last turn (re took Carthage fortress)

Broke down and bought a copy of this pictured. A lot of people playing this game locally here. Primarily a 3 person game. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Are we counting miniatures games here? We've been playing Frostgrave lately, on the margins of my local historical miniatures club...
Who makes/made the Belisarius game?

I just played an interesting odd duck wargame that plays up to six people. Grand Imperialism from 1978. A fictional 19th century conquest/colonization game. One thing it has going for it is just a skeleton of rules - you could add a lot to it without damaging the basic system. Anyway, it is fairly high chaos, but still fun and "easy playing."

Played Ivanhoe(GMT Games) on Thanksgiving eve with my wife and brother in law. I won the tournament! www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/883/ivanhoeIt is a quick little filler type Reiner Knizia special. Kind of fun in a casual way though especially to introduce a non gamer to, and to be able to break out your Knight/Chivalry corny accent and sayings.

This is what I have currently on the table and set up. Likely will be playing it tomorrow with a friend. Looks interesting, some leadership, artillery, skirmishing fire, riflemen, militia, disruption rules etc.

Hi , yes it does use the Musket & Sabre core rules. I played the Germantown one earlier, and liked it for the most part (worst victory conditions I have ever witnessed though). This one looks more interesting to me. I am digging these, but one needs to be prepared for a bit of errata and rules holes. Besides that they make for a fun 75-120 minutes foray. I have my eye on this slightly larger folio one next www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/170999/masuria-winter-battle-1915

The play of First Saratoga went Ok. Familiar story of rules holes and errata - had to cross reference the decision games site a lot. Fun period, map and victory conditions though. Here is what I have set up now to hopefully play tomorrow with a guy. I have played others from this series, they are simplistic but fun, and the rules are accurate. The beach landing rolls are fun in this series .

Recently found out that the WGR Moderns had a '93 edition, so I've tracked down a copy to see how it compares to my own 'modernization' of the '79 version.

I'm going to be surprised* by a copy of Britannia for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to playing that. *"Surprised" as in A) I was asked what I'd like for Christmas, and B) I was the only one at home when the delivery guy came so I got to sign off on it.

Nice, these big multi-player games can be a ton of fun if you can get a good group of players to the table for them.

Gamed a bit this afternoon. 2 games of backgammon as a warm up to get the brains firing - and then some Attack Sub - this is a game by Avalon Hill that is designed by the same guy that did Up Front. Some same core mechanics, card based +. Out of print and Getting sort of expensive to acquire now days. It is a lot of fun/adrenaline, and can be quick/deadly. We did a starter type sub on sub battle (2 subs each, NATO and USSR), then we did the scenario mirrored after Hunt For Red October, a nuclear sub gone rouge and getting tracked down by some surface vessels with helicopters in this case. www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1413/attack-sub

I played a large HeroClix game with 3,000 points per side. Shuma-Gorath led an army of villains in an attack on the SHIELD helicarrier; SHIELD agents, the Avengers, and some other heroes were the defenders. The heroes finally won, but it took forever to take down Shuma-Gorath; he (it?) is a real death-ray in this game.

"Familiar story of rules holes and errata."
Too familiar, for too long; I've reached the point where I just don't want to bother with Decision Games titles anymore because of this.
