Breath keeps a tight grip on the rope and a careful eye on Fated. Can she make out any of the runes from her position? Languages is her speciality! Breath must cross the rickety bridge and subject herself to the saving throw if she wishes to read the runes. Will she do so?

OOC: Does Fated have any inkling of what danger was avoided when he passed the save? Like, did he feel some grav effect tugging him into the ring and he maintained his footing, or did he shrug off whispered voices and some compulsion to hurl himself in?

I would describe the sensation as: Fated's feet took on a life of their own and wanted to step through the ring; mindlessly, almost like sleepwalking. Fated's brain won the battle and maintained control over his body. Now that he is conscious of the effect, he will not have to save again.
Breath is too far away to examine the portal in any detail.

While Fated and Breath are busy down below, those above hear the approaching motor of the barge---Apothecaria has returned from the scouting mission to Slime Forest Island.

(ooc: assuming she can see them)
Apothecaria spies some of her fellows gathered around a hole in the ground with a winch apparatus nearby. She raises her hand in greeting and starts toward it, Grekk milling around her.

Fated unties himself. "Breath, reel the rope in and tie one end to yourself and the other end to the bridge. Give it enough play so you can get close enough to read the ring. If you start into the ring, the rope will stop you. Then I'll smack you in the head or something to bring you to your senses. Sounds plausible, right?"

Breath of New Moon narrows her eyes (invisibly ), then shrugs and does as Fated suggests. "I will leave my weapons here, so I will not involuntarily cut the line if I am overcome, nor be in the position to cause damage to you if you need to attempt to save me."

Fated readies himself to make an open field tackle...

Breath fails her save vs. spells (7) and is overwhelmed by desire to step through the portal! Her feet move of their own accord, and only the rope and Fated's timely tackle prevent her from walking through the stone ring. Alas, due to these jarring events, she is unable to concentrate for a turn and attempt to read the runes.
[Had Breath not been prepared with the rope, I might have required Fated to make an opposed Strength check to stop her.]

Fated delivers a stinging slap to Breath's face then looks intently into her eyes --
"Are you okay? Are you back?!?!?" He looks for signs that Breath has returned to her senses, as he cocks his arm and readies another strike (this time with the back of his hand).

Breath has regained her senses. But when she tries to gaze once more upon the portal, she feels her mind start to go blank and the compulsion returning, so she quickly looks away.
No re-save is allowed until she has gained a level.

Fated tosses a copper coin through the ring, just to see what happens...

1... 2... 3... 4... PING!
(there was no ping sound when Fated threw the first coin through the portal and it vanished)

Fated: "Well Breath, so far I'm out 2 c.p. in here. I think we should gather the rest of the expedition and decide how to proceed... either with the mission or into the unknown."

((OOC: Sorry, swamped yesterday, no computer time!))
"This certainly bears further investigation, but for the moment I think we should proceed without our mission. Let us return."
Breath heads back towards the cauldron, collecting her weapons along the way.

"Right!" Grand yells down. "We'll have you up in two shakes of lambs tail!"
Turning to the Punjabis, he continues. "There you have it. Two to come up. Chop Chop. Put your backs into it."
