Dawn, April 28
After a restful, uninterrupted night's sleep, Breath of New Moon, Fated to Die, and Shade of the Evermore have reached 4th level and the combat rank of Hero!
What actions do they take on rising to celebrate the occasion?
The camp is socked in by pea soup fog that muffles sound and obscures vision beyond 6". The dinosaurs are all sleeping peacefully, and your henchmen are off doing Cthulhu-knows-what.
I love the smell of CARCOSA in the morning!

Fated daubs himself in mud, then finds a convenient pool. He dips into it, then rises from the water slowly and with purpose, like Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now...

Fantasy Combat in Chainmail Carcosa
Chainmail ends with a very strange Appendix E: Fantasy Combat Table. This matrix lists the 2d6 probability for Heroes and Wizards to battle various dragons, trolls, balrogs, etc. The idea is that each side's "boss" figures would single each other out for a duel, while their conventional forces are locked in mass/troop combat.
Here are the to-hit targets (on 2d6) for a Hero vs.:
Wight/Ghoul: 6 Hero: 7 Lycanthrope: 8 Troll/Ogre: 9 Elemental/Roc/Superhero: 10 Balrog/Giant/Wizard/Wraith: 11 Dragon/Treant: 12
The DM will determine which of the above creatures is most applicable for each Carcosan/Cthulhloid foe (most Great Old Ones would count as dragon/treant, then working down the list from there).
A roll lower than the target number misses. A roll equal to the target number does no damage but inconveniences the target in some way (pushed back 1 square, fumbles what it is holding, breaks a caster's concentration, suppresses a special defense for 1 round, etc.) A roll higher than the target the attacker may choose to inconvenience as above, or inflict hit point damage equal to rolling the attacker's hit dice.
The main disadvantage to participating in Fantasy combat is that you lose the benefit of your henchman "meatshields." In normal mass/troop combat, a Hero will always be the last man standing in his unit (and he gives +1 bonus to his unit's to-hit). But if the Hero leaves the protection of the unit to engage a Fantasy foe, then he exposes himself to a Fantasy counterattack.
A Fantasy Combat attack can be a chain or combo of actions up to your number of hit dice (drop fractional dice). For example a 4th level hero could:
* Draw the Rune Sword, call upon his patron diety, leap into the air, and stab Cthulhu in the ankle! * Fire his grapple gun, chop open the walker's belly with his light-sword, plant the device, and leap clear of the explosion! * Karate chop the pilot, wrestle control of the plane, aim it at the enemy munitions depot, and parachute to safety! * Fence for a while, your opponent says "I'm not really left handed!" fence some more, then say "I'm not left handed either"! * The man twirls his sword impressively, then twirls it some more; you shrug and shoot him. * You taunt your old nemesis into a death-match to buy your troops time to escape! * Stab the dinosaur really, really, really, really hard!
I am considering granting Sorcerer PC's a +1 bonus to certain foes (perhaps: incorporeal/energy creatures, summoned beings, creatures immune to normal weapons, etc.) to reflect the fact that on the Chainmail table, Wizards have improved to-hit vs. such foes compared with superheroes, presumably reflecting their magical attacks/equipment/experience.

Breath of New Moon stands and looks about. In the dim light of the dawn fog a faint flame-like radiance can be seen emerging from her eyes, crawling about her invisible skin (briefly making visible her facial features), and then returning to reside balefully in her eye sockets for a few moments before repeating the journey.

The Shade of the Evermore awakens from a deep sleep. He opens his eyes - all three of them - and slowly glides to his feet. He stretches, working out the kinks in his back, thinking about his next chance to swim in the warm oceanic water.
Finding a mild irritation on his head, he reaches up and scratches. He feels a gentle tug and hears a soft popping noise. Bringing his hand back down, he sees one of his stubby antennae has broken off! He reaches back up to feel his head where it sprouted out and finds a sore spot. His hand returns with a small smear of blood on it.
Curious, the Shade of the Evermore feels for his other antennae and finds it already missing. He looks down to the ground and sees it there, in the grass where he slept. Again, there is a sore spot on his head, but he can tell it is already healing.
Unsure of what is happening to him, he picks up the broken antennae and stows them away, next to the severed hand of a deep one and two black pearls...

The Giant Stone Head lies west. but with the fog so thick, it will be tough to move around without getting lost. Move out this morning, and if so who will take direction (make a Bushcraft roll for the group), or will you wait around for the weather to clear?
Now you start to hear sounds of commotion from the watch-fire where your henchmen/minions were keeping guard last night. Unfamiliar voices...

After a short time the 8 foot plus Behemoth horror Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master walks from the direction of the henchmen and moves purposely around the entire camp. His sword sheathed, he walks with 3 black ghostly creatures swirling around his body. In his hand he holds the harness of an enormous Allosaurus. His huge blood red cloak hides his guise from all who look in his direction.

Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master stops and slowly turns his head towards Fated. The smell of death and decay is palpable in the air.
"Friend, though I doubt the feeling is mutual." His deep voice sounds strained and forced and is followed by the hissing of the shades that surround him.
Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master begins to walk towards Fated and yanks back the hood of his cloak. "I tire of hiding from what I am"
Revealed to all is a decayed head of a bone man. Dried blood, bits of fur and other patches of other skin colors mottle his face. Other areas there's nothing but gore and cracked bone. If that wasn't bad enough hanging attached to his right shoulder rests another head, that looks partially deflated and isn't moving. As he walks closer the smell of undeath is almost overbearing.
He pauses for a moment to read the reaction "So, friends? He turns his large decaying as he asks the question laying it against the limp vestigial head on his shoulder

The Shade of the Evermore nods in understanding and communicates to all, **At least you don't have to worry about being eaten by the Fine Brown Cannibals...**
OOC: FYI to the new players, after the cryogen chamber incident, Shade can only communicate via telepathy - one of the traits he inherited from the B'yakhee.
Shade attempts to Sense Motive on the newcomer.
**What is your name, friend?**

The Heroes are dismayed to learn of the following casualties among the night watchmen:
Buck Quarry: terrified [acquires phobia: undead] but unharmed Brown Cannibals: 1 unconscious but stable at 0hp, 2 wounded with potentially infected zombie bites/scratches Fated's ulfire men: 2 wounded with potentially infected zombie bites/scratches The Lurking Skull (Minion's bone man stealth specialist): had to be put down as he began to turn

Cannibal to closely monitor the status of the wounded cannibals. If any of them shows signs of turning (pale skin, darkened eyes, the desire to eat brai... er... a propensity for moaning), they are to be put down immediately. They will closely monitor them for the next several days.

RETRACTION: The expedition leaders have compasses, so there's no risk of moving in the wrong direction.

Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master finds the sensation in his mind strange but also somewhat familiar. He attempts to communicate by thinking the words in his mind
You speak to me like the old gods that made me. I am known as the Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master. I know I was made and I know what I used to be but beyond that I know little of what my purpose is. I have been getting visions of these face like stones and I feel drawn to them, do you happen to know what I speak?
OOC: I will attempt this if it's possible. If it doesn't work then obviously ignore the above.

I know that but he's been communicated to telepathically before by what he believes to be an old god and that's how he has spoken to it before so that's why he's trying to do the same with you.

Grand Yet Mystifying pulls out a somewhat ratty and grayish handkerchief and holds it to his mouth and nose.
"Dear God, what is that smell? It's absolutely appalling."
Realizing the smell was coming from the seven foot tall dead guy he continues ," Well, I'm sure it can't helped. Could you at least be a good chap and move down wind?"
Seeing Nigel approach with his requested dinner, Grand sends him him away with a wave of is hand," no, no, can't possibly eat now. Even if it is a nice slice of lamb and potatoes."
The yellow man known as Nigel looks down at the leaf with a slice of dried meat and some pieces of fungus, shrugs, and walks away.

Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master stays focused on the mind in his head. He does oblige in trying to move downwind.
His face is filled with confusion as he looks around at the full party. "You are accepting and kind to me.....why? Never in my unlife have I been treated with anything but scorn? " a clear sign of confusion can be heard through his gravely deep voice.

Apothecaria looks around at the motley crew she has fallen in with, wondering if she has been rescued or taken a leap from the frying pan into the fire ...
"Does anyone need healing herbs?" She asks in a small voice.

" Well, one must try to be civilized, otherwise we are nothing more than savag...es," Grand pauses for a second as he looks over the Fine Brown Cannibals. " Regardless. A certain amount of decorum of called for...appearances aside.""Though I do think I overstep myself, for I too am nothing more than a guest of these fine individuals who so galantly fought of the horde of zombies. Thought I do say things could have ended for the worse if I and my men hadn't come along. Excellent timing on my part, if I do say so myself."OOC: Is Shade broadcasting his thought to everyone or just to Apothacaria?

A smile crosses Loyal Beasts face and its obvious he hasn't done this in a long time as pieces of flesh from his face flakes off and crack.
Thank you all, though I do have some questions. Have you heard of a stone shaped like a face? I seek it, though I know little of where it is or why other than I was compelled to do so.
I also seek someone who may know how to read runes of the old gods
Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master hefts from his back what looks like an enormous sharpened piece of sheet metal and slams it into the ground in front of him. You realize it's an enormous sword, unsuitable for a normal man with runes that glow with an eerie green light.
