The Barge
Shade and Apothecaria are in charge of the scouting mission; Breath (by proxy of Dream Stalker) and Loyal Beast (wraithlings) may also participate in the action. (Did I forget any one?) Why don't you take it on over to the Episode 19 thread, introduce yourself to the castaways...

Breath of New Moon is primarily watchful for the return of the Kraken-beast. "I've got you covered, Bone-Sister!" calls Minion of the Unholy Fragnog. He's joined the orange military mastermind Gunnery Sgt. Veiled at the peak of the guano pile, where they've moved the enormous radio beam turret from the back of the ailing brontosaurus. With his eyeball in the telescopic sights and finger on the trigger, the gunner commands the bay---no kraken (hydra or ordinary variety) will ambush this island!

Fated: "Hey buddy, we're gonna get you some help. Hang tight. Maybe taste the paste?"

"Quite a bit of luck there, your man falling into the pot. Even if it most likely full of guano." Grand says, looking down the manhole.
"NIGEL! Have the men find find a length of rope...or chain..or maybe some vines...something we can use to pull him out." He dimisses the tellow man with a wave of his hand.
As the Punjabis fan out to follow his directions, Grand looks down the hole again.
"Hmmm...I wonder what that chain for the pot is attached too.? Maybe there's a mechanism to raise it up to the surface. Would make sense if this was the mine..."
Grand Yet Mystifying looks to see if there is a mechanism for pulling up the cauldron.

Leaving the others to keep watch, Breath joins the others near the manhole.
"I think you're right, Grand."

Grand roots around in the guano and uncovers a winch that raises/lowers the cauldron!
[OOC: the expedition is well-supplied with ropes, if necessary.]

Fated: "Hey buddy, we're gonna get you some help. Hang tight. Maybe taste the paste?" "It tastes like a combination of.... mud and meat!" Fated's man calls up from the hole.

Grand roots around in the guano and uncovers a winch that raises/lowers the cauldron! [OOC: the expedition is well-supplied with ropes, if necessary.] "NIGEL!" Bellowed Grand. "Now where is that man? Never around when I need him..." As Nigel and the other Punjabis show up loaded with rope, Grand continues. "What are you doing, lollygagging about with that rope? For god's sake man, stay focused on the task at hand!" He gestures towards the winch. "Well, go on...give it a crank! Let's get that poor fellow up to where he can see the light of day." Nigel and the Punjabis will winch up the cauldron.

Raising the cauldron requires 6 men and makes a ridiculous amount of noise, but the operation succeeds and Fated's ulfire man reaches the surface unharmed. He does not show any immediate ill effects from taste-testing the strange paste.

Breath continues watching down the hole to see if the noise attracts anything.

Breath and Fated ride the pasty cauldron down to the trapezoidal pew room. The creaking noise continues from the tunnel to the north.

I believe Fated has an electric torch which he carries everywhere he goes.

Breath walks over to examine the passage which is the source of the noise.

Fated draws his weapon (sword?) and scrapes it loudly along the stone as he draws up aside the entrance to the passage, so he cannot be seen by whatever is within. Then he plays the light onto the wall opposite the passage, hoping to draw out whatever is within to investigate.

The precautions prove unnecessary, as the mysterious creaking sound is nothing more sinister than a rickety old wood-and-rope bridge. It crosses 50' across a bottomless abyss to a stone platform dominated by a 10'-diameter Stargate-style stone ring. Inside the ring is pure Nothing, not black or white or gray, but simply void, the absence of anything.

Fated examines the bridge to judge it's capacity to safely support him.

[DM secretly makes an untrained 1-in-6 Architecture check on behalf of Fated] The bridge looks perfectly stable; what could possibly go wrong?

Fated goes back to grab the rope thrown down earlier for his man.
To Breath: "One of us ties this around the waist and walks across, while the other stays on this side to hold on. Who's going?"

Good plan with the rope. Who will approach the stargate? Don't be frightened... it's only a rift in space and time.

Fated ties the rope to his waist, waits for Breath to secure it, then begins across the bridge with a jaunty stride.

Fated ties the rope to his waist, waits for Breath to secure it, then begins across the bridge with a jaunty stride. As Fated approaches, he must attempt a save vs. spells to resist the pull of the void! He needs 14 and rolls 19... success! He cautiously approaches the stargate... Having made his save once, he becomes permanently immune to the effects of this particular portal.

Fated approaches the gate and examines it first from a "safe" distance of about 10'. Any external controls? Runes or writing? Anything else noteworthy about the platform?

Fated approaches the gate and examines it first from a "safe" distance of about 10'. Any external controls? Runes or writing? Anything else noteworthy about the platform? Let's play with some alternate language rules, shall we? I'm inspired by Malcadon's house rules in this thread: odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=carcosa&action=display&thread=7036Fated rolls 2d6=3 + 1 for having 16 Int = 4 He does not recognize the runes on the stone ring, but feels he could probably puzzle it out with a week's worth of study. The portal is standing on the opposite edge of the platform, as though anyone stepping through would plummet into the abyss. Shining his electric torch around the smooth stone platform, Fated spies footprints: tracings of dried paste in the shape of bare human feet. The tracks lead from the bridge and straight through the runed hoop without hesitation.

Breath keeps a tight grip on the rope and a careful eye on Fated. Can she make out any of the runes from her position? Languages is her speciality!
