(on the barge) Apothecaria attempts to combine the spores with something edible and feeds it to Princess. She will also attempt to use her own remedies in a separate treatment. How about this proposed game mechanic to represent Witchcraft antidotes/antivenins: Apothecaria rolls 1d6-2; the result is added to the patient's save vs. poison to survive the ailment. This grants from -1 penalty (botched surgery!) to +4 on the save. As she accumulates levels, the die size improves: 1d8-2 at 4th level, 1d10-2 at 8th level, etc. A non-witch with a Healing-type skill can also apply antidotes at 1d4-2 efficacy. Non-healers are as likely to do harm as good at 1d3-2! Princess is 4HD so her unadjusted save vs. poison is 10. Her dad at 9HD needs an 8. Sound good? Consistent with your vision of the class? Shall we say a little prayer to the dice gods?

Sorry for being AWOL for so long.
Grand Yet Mystifying looks at the ailing dinosaur.
"If only we had a bottle of Dr. Mixers Scrofula Syrup or some Ayer's Carthartic Pills. Those would be just the thing to fix what ails thsi creature."
He readjusts his monocle and looks again at the big dino. "Maybe a lancing will help. Something to remove the bilious humors."

Loyal Beast cannot stand to see the suffering of this poor creature, he'd seen enough pain in his life and unlife.
Unless another stops him Loyal Beast strikes as straight and heavy a mercy blow as he can on the ailing dinosaur.

The Wraiths on the barge have little care for anything but their own survival. They move quickly off into the distance of the quickly inflating dinosaur.

Sensing the Loyal Beast's intended action from the water below, Shade of the Evermore communicates, **First try to lance the wound.**

Guano Island
Loyal Beast hacks at Big Daddy's swollen neck in a desperate attempt to relieve the building pressure! No "to-hit" roll is necessary against his helpless "patient" and it is an automatic critical hit inflicting double (two dice) damage: 2d10=6hp, reducing the brontosaur to 50hp. Furthermore the dino receives a bonus of 1d3-2=0 to his upcoming save vs. poison from the amateur medical care.

de Barge
Apothecaria healing attempt is a success: she rolls a natural 6, granting +4 to Princess' save vs. poison! Therefore she only needs a 6:
and rolls a natural 1!
Princess pops dealing 6hp (her current hp total) to all within the blast radius (save vs. dragon breath for half)
Shade and his Deep One Minion are safe under the water. The 3 wraithlings levitate over the surface of the water and escape to safety. Apothecaria's save is 18 (success) and she takes 3hp reducing her to 2hp. Her Red Lieutenant rolls 6--full damage and is killed by exploding dinosaur bits! Grekk rolls 5--full damage and has 20hp (8HD) Serpent's Scion rolls 20--half damage and is killed by exploding dinosaur bits! Dream Stalker rolls 14--full damage and is reduced to 1hp Big Al rolls 1--full damage and is reduced to 20hp (8HD)
Princess, Serpent's Scion, and The Red Lieutenant are obliterated and the surviving party members are traumatized and splattered with gore!
How did Apothecaria survive the blast? (dove into the water, used her Lieutenant as a meatshield, hid behind Big Al, etc.)
Fortunately, ships ignore damage less than 1shp (1 "ship hit point"=10hp), so there is no damage to the barge.

Meanwhile back on Guano Rock
Big Daddy attempts his all-important save vs. poison (needs an 8):
and rolls a.... 9.... he just barely succeeds!
More blood than you have ever seen in your life spurts from both ends of the alpha brontosaurus, staining the pure white guano fields. He collapses to the ground, completely spent. His mate, Big Mama, rushes to his side and nuzzles his unconscious form in concern.
Loyal Beast would have taken 50hp (save for half) had the dino exploded, while those who heeded Fated's advice and took cover would have taken half damage, or zero damage on a successful save.

"Well, I think we just found out where all the blood spots came from. I hope the barge gets back here again before the beast does." Breath says.

Some atavistic impulse, or, perhaps her healer's training tells Apothecaria something bad is about to happen. With an impressively vulgar oath and a shouted warning to the others, she dives into the water. Not the best decision, perhaps, but she has little time to consider her options. Even then, she's almost too late. She winces from the impact of the beast's innards as they impact her body. Then, she hits the water, washing away the offal as she submerges.
She surfaces, gasping for breath, and begins swimming back to the boat as fast as she can ...

Loyal Beast drops to his knees and rubs the tired dinosaur lovingly.
Friend, I hope you know I did what I did to save you
To those watching the scene the big Zombie monstrosity seems to hold onto some deep emotions, like a mother caring for a child.
The Fates didn't want Loyal Beast to bite it ;D

Survivors on the Barge
Once you have licked your wounds and mourned the dead, you may proceed to Episode 19: Island of the Slime Forest.
You may choose to land at the dead whale site, circle clockwise to encounter Preservation of Humanity, circle anti-clockwise into the unknown, or otherwise scout the island as you see fit. Please narrate your bedraggled crew's arrival in the new thread...

Down at Guano Rock
The disturbance with the ailing brontosaurus has exposed a previously hidden manhole cover!
Who dares to explore the dark bowels of this mysterious guano island?

As soon as someone seconds Apothecaria's vote to rendezvous with the new party member at the fish traps, please proceed to Ep. 19 and make your landfall and introductions... you will notice a rotting whale carcass on your right as you pass by; it will make a good landmark to orient yourselves.
[sorry, it's The Preservation of Humanity, my mistake---I'll go back and edit my original post.]

Deep feelings well up within Loyal Beast and he enters a meditative state. He senses the presence of death: three lives have been lost.

Loyal Beast sensing the death fears for Big Al and his companions.
We must cross, three of our friends have died and we mustn't separate ourselves anymore.
With that Loyal Beast gets on the barge and heads over with the rest of the party.

Is there maybe a consensus to flash-forward to dusk on Slime Forest Island, you spend the afternoon ferrying everyone across on the single barge, the party is reunited on the other side?

Fated: "Uh, excuse me... we're going to leave a MANHOLE unexplored? I mean, it's right there in the name -- it's a HOLE that MEN are supposed to go into."
Fated crouches down by the manhole, stills his breathing, and focuses his thoughts... any hint of communication from Snarf?

[You can seal up the manhole for future exploration, if you like. It was just a random encounter to give the people on the island something to do while the scouting party checked out the island... if the signal from the scouts on the barge is "all clear" then we can skip ahead to the evening after all the troops and supplies are ferried across... You guys' call... ?]

Fated waves over one of his men, "Come help me seal this up." When the henchman stands over the hole to lend a hand, Fated points excitedly toward the distance, "Hey is that a flying DINOSAUR?!?!?" When everyone looks where he's pointing, Fated casually hipchecks his henchman into the manhole. "OH MY GOODNESS HE'S FALLEN!!! Um... CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING DOWN THERE??? We should get him a torch, guys..."

"Blimey! Awfully clumsy of your man there to fall down that hole. You really should try to find yourself a better class of help."
"NIGEL! Prepare a torch and send it down to that man. Clumsy as he is we don't want him traipsing around in the dark. He might injure himself."
Nigel, always a bit baffled by what his masters says, tries to find something to make a torch from and will drop it down the hole.

Down the Hole
Fated's man has a few frightening moments as he drops into the dark manhole. He lands with a metallic GONG! and is temporarily stunned. He's landed in some kind of pasty substance that probably saved his neck. Nigel throws down a torch, and sees the ulfire henchman is suspended in a large copper cauldron which is swinging back and forth from a chain. Fated's man gathers his wits, adjusts to the rocking motion, peers over the lip, and shines the torch to illuminate a trapezoidal room of approximately 1,200 square feet carved out of the solid guano. Facing the cauldron are four wooden benches running along each wall of the trapezoid. Curiously, there's an empty pairs of boots on the floor in front of each position on the benches. and Fated's man hears a creaking noise from a tunnel to the north. The paste has an earthy smell and squelches around his knees and feet!
