larsen-family.us/~1066/5armies.html contains a miniatures adaptation which might have some ideas you could use. He has several other battles from Tolkien as well - Pellenor and Helm's Deep of course and a few others.

I have entirely retypeset (somewhat low quality, no kerning, but it should be easy to improve if I get the time) M&M in a pdf using fonts close to the original and bound it pamphlet style, with thread. I scanned the images including the cover and cleaned them all up. I even left the errors and font changes intact. It took (estimating) something like 30 hours, I did it last year when I was unemployed. Now I have a pristine looking M&M. I don't know when or if I'll get around to the other volumes.
I also worked out how to cut, glue and assemble a white box including the side using some images from the net.
Sadly I have a job now and don't have the time for such silly (and EXTREMEMLY BORING) activities.

Hmm. OK.
1. Greyhawk - variable damage, thieves, more spells. Very useful. 2. Eldritch Wizardry - Demons! Cool artifacts! 3. Arduin Grimoire - Crazy random stuff. Lots of color, easy to borrow bits. 4. Monster manual 5. Player's Handbook
Some commentary: Blackmoor is out, seemed a little fluffy. Monks meh. Assassins meh.
SOme may complain that MM and PHB were not supplements, but that is pretty much how we played till the DMG came out. Then it was all AD&D.

Germanic types - that seems right. And there would be some interbreeding and cultural diffusion, so you can keep some of what you have in mind.

I got a 6th ed. OCE in maybe 1978/ 79 about the time I got a Monster Manual. I never got Holmes since it was so incomplete (3d level? pfft!) preferring to wait for the PHB and DMG. I got Eldritch Wizardry at about that time. About 1988(?) I got a great copy of Blackmoor at the clearance price of $3.00. In the late 90s I purged all of my wargames and most of my RPG stuff but I hung onto AD&D and WUwA (why??). Most of the wargames collection has been replaced along w/ some newer stuff, and I have since acquired M&M, M&T, GH and EW again.

Hmm. Not at all how I picture Hyborians. I see them more as hairy dark ages people who fought against the Romans.
Other than that I think your list is solid.

No one has yet mentioned Arduin Grimoire so I will. Random bits and pieces from one book or another bring little snippets of color and imagination, but as a whole I don't think it could be imported to the extent that say Greyhawk, Blackmoor or EW could be.

It does have a ruler, but 5.5" did not staple quite right - I had to let it out about 1/8" and then it hit the line.
I used some random staples. One thing I noticed is that there was more of a curve on the staples than on the original saddle stich.

OK it is done. They were so corroded, one broke as I removed it. Note to self: leave ~ 1/8th of an inch additional length when you set the long-reach stapler, it doesn't go through where you expect it to. Luckily I am a gamer not a collector so the extra pair of holes doesn't bother me (much).

Hmm, I don't think there was much question on the geek thing. Scratch that, ANY question!
Re. collecting v. playing: Definitely I fall on the side of playing. However I re-typeset Men and Magic and printed it out in order to preserve the (damaged but usable) original (I should write this up w/ photos as I think I have something to add to that category of posting...) and it was actually the intensive handling of scanning and then doing the typesetting that wore through the paper requiring restapling. I'd like to re-typeset all of the books to create playable copies, although really only my Blackmoor, purchased minty new in 1988 for all of $3, is in tip-top shape.
Re. staples (Side note: I can't believe I am typing this)
Greyhawk: Two staples visible on spine, same two staples at center. Second printint, July 1975
Eldritch Wizardry: Three staples visible on spine DIFFERENT 3 STAPLES VISIBLE IN CENTER! should I post at Acaeum? No indication of printing. Balrog present in text. Could this be an early printing?
Oh, and I picked up a long-reach stapler at Staples this morning. No more improvised bogus stapling of booklets for me!
(edited for dopey square brace instead of manly html formatting)

Hmm. The Greyhawk staples are pretty rusty. I am considering replacing them, I am worried that the same thing that happened to my Men and Magic will happen here - the center pages have torn at the staples and I had to restaple.
Sorry about the lack of substance here, but I don't think there are many elsewhere who would understand my excitement...

Woo hoo!
Wife is out of town, is it a coincidence that Greyhawk and Eldritch Wizardry just arrived? Does that make me a bad person?
;D

Huh. When I type Kushirte it gets censored.

Oh I get it. "Kushirte" "of or concerning the land of Kush or its language or culture" is a dirty word. I thought it was a bug in the forum code. <Eyeroll/>

Hmm, I've run an IRC channel in the past on my home box. How many would be interested in such a thing? And what features?
* general chit chat * game lobby - announce, sign up * campaign chat ...

The problem w/ using the damage as the number of arrows fired is it does not account for misses. And what about a hit on an arm v. one in the heart? Both one hit? Really?
