You are correct; I meant Bledsaw, not Blake. Too many Bob's for me, apparently. Remain skeptical while I try to recall my source. I am also skeptical - but very interested in what you have to say. Mad props for the second line in the quoted text; sounds like a line from a cantankerous sage!

The Ur-Beatle hit on something awesome irrespective of whether vibratory planes are what Gygax (or Arneson) had in mind: I diagramned the chromatic scale real quick & it checks out. I will be using this!

Good point, foxroe: I totally spaced mentioning that one could do this stuff without Highguard.

Instead of viewing capital ships as a possible (if implausible) PC endgame, what about 1. Capital ship as an adventure setting...a deep space megadungeon 2. Capital ship as a setting for faction play in relatively close quarters 3. See number 2 above, but the PCs are on a capital ship-cum-rogue state on the fringe of the Imperium 4. Like number 1 above, run like a Braunstein or Arneson scenario with different players running separate salvage, policing, & other teams, each of which has goals that might conflict or achieve synergy with the others?
Any of these scenarios would make capital ships practical from a gaming perspective.

Yep, today we stateside folks are enjoined to thank those who are willing to defend & otherwise serve the U.S.A. As OD&Ders, let's also honor that doughty fighting-man, the foundation of most adventuring bands. Roll up a Veteran or three, hire some meatshields, and lead them forth to honorable or perfidious martial deeds! November is also Solo Gaming Appreciation Month, so if you've no friends at hand or are ill (as I am today), roll up a Veteran, grab a random dungeon generator, and go! Anyway, that is my plan today. YMMV.

Sorry, I could see it was coming out wrong when I wrote it. I mean to that it is important to still let them be awesome, regardless of the class abilities or stats. Clearly you do! No big, mate. One of my occasional players is firmly in the awesome camp, to the point of superhero D&D PCs at level 1. There is no one true way to game. I also have to say that I dig your Treasure Hunters blog.

People don't play D&D to be crappy. They play to be aweysome. Bah! Point taken, but my mates play awesomely with suck-award PCs as well as "heroes". They turn lames into epic figures. Still, it's largely a matter of taste. Oh, and most of my mates learned on 5e, being 10-15 years younger than me. They still like the challenge of 1e and 0e better. \○/ The take away is to know and inform one's audience before playing.

It is in the DMG and your estimate is about right. Unearthed Arcana gives three methods of unarmed fighting. Damage is comparable.

smubee, have you given any thought to a minimum number of refs that you'd want on board before launching Odd World?

smubeeThis is just an idea that I had. Perhaps it's not the brightest, maybe it's impossible.. But gosh darnit am I obsessed with this idea. So I'm sure we're all aware of wotcs 5e presence at cons or game stores with their Adventurers League organized play. They tried something similar with 3e with "Living Greyhawk" from what I understand. The idea is that if you can make one character and play in an AL game that spans multiple cons, or store events, levelling them up appropriately as they go along.. My issue with this is that each character doesn't really change anything about the world. They adhere to strict rules. The world does not feel real or like any specific character could go and do something that drastically changes the world. I could not use my character to side with the Storm Giants in storm kings thunder and hunt down the small-folk and become a notorious anti-hero feared by all!! Then I started thinking.. There's a desire from new school D&D players to try out older editions.. What better way to show them the openness and freedom of OD&D then for us to give them the canvas, the brushes, and the paint and say "Go nuts". With each action having a direct effect on the world. If Bob playing at Gary Con wanted to hide out in the catacombs and start a gang of thieves to steal from adventurers that came through the passageways at NTRPGCon, it would be possible. That's my fantasy. We could promote these forums and old school gaming in general.. I think it's a neat idea and would love to hear what people have to say about this. The idea is that it's a living, breathing campaign, similar to the old Blackmoor or Greyhawk days.. We would use the Outdoor Survival game map as our campaign setting and follow the 3LBB to determine the locations of Castles, Dungeons, etc. It's a crazy idea, but I think it could be a lot of fun.. Even just for a trial run. I have a name for it too -- Odd World : Where Anything Can Happen (Odd as in OD&D ) I think it's a great idea, smubee.

I have no familiarity with Adventurers League except for the name. Is your concept similar to the OSR Flailsnails conventions? link

Still waiting for the other Carcosa Modules I have done work on all four of the forthcoming Carcosa modules, and one of them in particular has a lot done on it. I'm afraid that I do not have an estimate for a release date on any of them. My next module to be released (hopefully before the end of July) is the first part of the quest for the Teeth of Dahlver-Nar. It is for 1st-level characters, and an "eye tyrant" features in it. Sweet! On a related note, I have one of the Teeth hidden in Stonehell dungeon, & my mostly 1st-level players are on the cusp of locating it

Good to hear from you, bravewolf! I thought it was cool. It took me a while to warm up to it, but I thought it really added to the flavor of Carcosa. Yeah, it does fit right in with the unpredictable alienness of that planet. I am probably going to have to bring a couple rolls of Play-doh for my players' hit dice; I have a couple klutzes in the group & we can't have those bones rolling free!

I tried that once. My players didn't like it. Don't let that deter you, though. Your group may be more receptive. Too bad for you, mate. Did you like it? Thanks for sharing, neighbor (I am over in Sacramento).

I figured this may be a good thread to say HI! to everyone I've been reading along for a while and finally registered. I'm from Kempten, Germany - a.k.a. Cambodunum. Usually someplace between Würzburg, Germany, and Madrid, Spain, but mostly in Germany since last year. I studied in Würzburg. Nice place, or at least it was. It's been a while since I've been there. Toll! Ein Kollege von mir ist im Würzburg gebornen. (Es tut mir leid, aber ich vergesse wie man in "past tense" schriebt.)

About 30-some miles from Sacramento, CA. Not actually a good area: I'd rather be back in Sacramento, or back in the Portland area, or in a couple other places, actually. Well, hopefully six years gone by finds you living in a place that you dig. For my part, I am in Sacramento running mostly weekly games at Great Escape Games.

Hola! Who here has used Carcosa's variable HD & damage rules with the Carcosan AD&D modules? How did it go? Thanks. Edit: My main concern with the variable dice conventions is that my system of choice (AD&D) has a few more moving parts than OD&D and Lamentations of the Flame Princess, so I am keenly interested in knowing whether the conventions broke the system & how that played with other gaming groups. If my players travel from Arduin to Carcosa, I'll give the crazy dice a toss geoffrey If and when you've got a sec, I'd dig hearing whether you use the crazy dice in your AD&D Carcosa campaign and how it's worked out (if applicable).
