I have nothing of value to add to this thread, except that what Droll stated above, is simply beautiful. Now, that's a gaming attitude if I ever heard one. Fight On!

First, I certainly hope this is the right place for this thread! Please move it if it's better in another sub-board.
Basically, I'm asking the community here if anyone knows of a copy of the "First Fantasy Campaign" available for sale. I am NOT a collector, and don't need to find one in pristine condition... I would hope it's not trashed, though.
I'm just a gamer dude, and hoping beyond hope to be able to find a copy for a reasonable price. If this is a pipe-dream, does anyone know if a PDF copy is available for sale, that could be professionally printed into a book or a wire-bound copy for reference and use at the game-table?
I'm very interested in the stuff I've learned about this product; The advice for setting up the particulars in the campaign, like players investing in roads and whatnot in their baronies really appeals to me. But I fear that this book may have (rightfully so) an extra-ordinary value due to collector interest. I just want to use it to play D&D!
Any links, or offers of sale, or advice on how to get a PDF copied and printed for personal use would be well appreciated!
Have a good one, OD&D'ers!
-Tim

Hahaha.... Now there's a downside! Well, I think if it where me, I'd have to rename myself 'Aslan'. Great table, talysman! Looks like a lot of fun... I'll have to visit your website/blog and see more.

I really ought to run another Carcosa game soon. Christmas in Carcosa? Nah, too cliche. I, for one, would love to see the OD&D stats of the mighty Shub-Niggura-Claus!!! "Now, foolish mortals... Let us find out who's been naughty or nice.... Muwahahahaha!!!"

I don't know what to do if that person won't even try the game unless they get their way perfectly. Perhaps some tactful reminders about, you know, regular life and how that kind of thing never happens, and well, how selfish it is to try to force having better stats than every other human at the table. I've been, as I'm sure most if not all gamers have been, party to such a player more than a few times. I've tried solo sessions with them, with a pre-genned character, to try to show how the game is still fun if your character isn't invincible. Most times, people are mature enough to realize it can be fun still and listen to reason. When they can't, I simply don't offer them a place in my game and politely as I can let them know the reason why (They aren't willing to play a reasonable character and won't budge from being unbeatable). Sorry I can't offer more help ((EDIT again: I should add that over the years, I've had really great friends that I got along wonderfully with, except in gaming, because of stuff like this. We eventually reach a point to agree to disagree, because I simply won't allow that sort of cheating (that is the way I see this sort of unreasonable behavior) in my games at all. It's not fair to me, or the other players, either... And I've never lost a friend over this.))

And gave him one of my PoD Delving Deeper copies We used to game alot when we were kids, over 20 years ago. Ran into him by chance today. Talked for like 2 hours about 'the good old days', and I told him about my favorite game and what a 'retro clone' is. He had no idea what Delving Deeper, or say Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerors of Hyperborea were. Now he does. Now he'd like to try them with me. Looking forward to it! I'm going to try, in the next month or so (he's about an hour and a half from me) to arrange a game with him and some people he knows. They still game some; Lots of 'older' games as well as 3.5 (which I detest; He says it's 'ok' but he likes the TSR D&D better). I'm hoping that DD will be a smash, and that the old style of play will be loved by all. We shall see. Going to email them all Philotomy's Musings and have some further discussion (we covered alot tonight, though) just as a primer to help understand why some of the 'AD&D-isms' aren't found in the DD copy I gave him. I'll let you guys know how it goes Fight On! ((posted over at Immersive Ink forums, too))

I don't think that this is something you can teach, of course; But to my mind, a critical point that determines (or will determine) whether a player is 'good' or 'great', is how excited they are to play. I can't say it enough. If a person is willing to slug through the math, get used to rules, and learn how to produce fun ideas... Through enthusiasm... Then that player is destined for greatness in the right gaming group. That's my take, and has been my experience over the years. If they are excited, they will grow in leaps and bounds, just because they are trying hard to, and loving every second of it! Great thread subject, by the way, tetramorph!

Since I include other alien types in my game I call the 'Grey Aliens' of the book 'Zeta', short for Zeta Rectilian. Not just for the ray-guns, either... Thumbs up for 'Zeta Reticulan! I think that's an actual star system (very, very relatively) close by, no? I like how you swapped out the name a bit also; "Rectilian" lends a neat lizard-guy aspect to my imagining of them!

...it's probably better to say nothing. Why pin yourself down? Let the players tell you what they want to do with it, how they want to use it, etc. and go from there, allowing or vetoing where appropriate. This is generally my philosophy regarding most, if not all, things D&D / Role-playing these days. In any event, I hope you reach a comfortable conclusion for yourself in this matter, Oakes

Fellas, I came home today from work to an exciting discovery! A package from Noble Knight games. Inside that package lay my very own journey into the depths of fantasy with Boinger the halfling, Bardan the dwarf, and their friends. Tonight, I begin my literary adventures with them for the first time in my life... As I read Dr. J. Eric Holmes' "The Maze of Peril". ...And I can't wait to start it! P.S. Thanks to Zenopus for the link to this book that brought my attention to being able to buy it!

I think that's pretty much how I envision this class, kingofelfland... He's so tricksey, so crafty, that growing in the knowledge required to be able to master his tricks eventually brings him right up to the doorstep of actual, true magic. I see some of the higher level stuff as his being able to 'break in' to the realm of things arcane, if that makes sense. He just doesn't do so from level 1 like a M-U does through arcane study.

I wanted these first-time role-players to have the experience of buying things, but that ate up time. Perhaps we should have used the prepared character equipment lists. Then again, they seemed to have as much fun buying things as in exploring. I think you made the best decision, regarding first-timers, in letting them buy equipment even though it took up some precious time. I don't know about you, but I *clearly* remember the excitement of buying stuff for my first few characters (even though that is about all I recall about them ), and I think you did them a great justice in letting them experience that upon their first time! I fudged a poison needle roll. It would have killed Arthen, which I thought would have been pretty mean for his first character so soon after emerging from buying things. So I had him take 1-6 points of damage, which reduced him to 1 point. That alone freaked him out. He will never open another chest again without checking. Although I am loathe to admit it, I would probably have done this, too. Better to let them live and learn in such an early exchange. Given the chance to play with them again, the dice can remain as they lay at later times to instill that sense of caution. BUT. It seems that your gracious ploy worked; That excellent, good-play-habit building exercise taught the young fellow to check chests! So it seems it all worked out in the end I played the sleep spell as affecting everyone (foe and friend) within the area of effect. That actually made for some fun suspense to see who succumbed. I assume that's how most play it, or am I wrong on this? This is how I understand the sleep spell, too... Yet another thing to 'learn' in the game... Be wary of friendly castings and where you are positioned! Of course I am not perfect, but this is something I try to consider when I play, too I find reminding the players to keep track of what they're holding in their hands--which weapon, or if they have a torch or mapping materials, etc.--to be sort of tiring. I need to impress upon them their own responsibility for this, if that makes sense. Sure! I think that sort of thing might take time. The more they play, and learn to understand the game, the more they will get this sort of thing In any case, it was quite fun. I'm looking forward to playing with them again. It will be great to hear about your being able to do so again! Wonderful play report, Sir

Yeah, it's pretty neat (in my opinion) that this guy is more of a 'stage trickster' than an actual arcane caster. A neat twist on an awesome class! I still need to read it fully, though... But love what I've read so far!

Hooray! My "Pound O' Gamescience Dice" arrived in the mail yesterday! Yep, these are the ones I remember using as a kid, when D&D was still a brand new experience to me. And I know I'm not the only one Here is a pic of them; Washed, and air-drying before getting inked: (Mouse-over for title; Click for a larger image in a new tab) Want some of your very own? Try looking Here. Needing some advice on how to ink these bad boys so they will last a long time between inks, and look great besides? Try this veteran gamer's advice. Or maybe look over here. I love the idea of 'lining out' the layout of the dungeon at first, especially if I want long corridors etc. Mine aren't really 'flow charts' though... Just light lines for corridors and light circles for rooms with light words like "Goblins" or "Medusa" or "Statue" or something. Once I can visualize (I interpret things visually, as Mike says above) the layout of the dungeon, then I draw in the rooms and corridors as normal.
I suppose I could run a game with just the light lines and a hip-shot room key in haste. But man, as it was stated above, it is just fun to draw maps!

Yesterday, I was engaged in PMing with another member here. It seems that he and I sent messages at nearly the same time to one another, so fast that I was not able to 'target' his latest message to me fast enough to have the little number bubble over that tab go away. That number bubble remains, saying "1", and when I get a new one of course it reverts to "2", etc. But it won't go away at all now and continues to show a 'new message' type of notification irregardless of whether I have one or not. I've tried logging out and back in; The number bubble won't leave. It's sort of like that "M" on old calculators that simply won't leave It's not truly a bother, but does anyone know how to clear and reset the notification bubble so it won't keep saying I have 1 new message even when I don't?
