The idea was brought up here: odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=carcosa&action=display&thread=7220I wanted to start this in a new thread so that the Map thread can stick to just map and does not deviate too far off track. The intent here is to have a group project where the community works together to flesh out sections of the the Carcosa map, one 10-mile hex at a time. The sub sections can be written up to turn each hex into it's own gaming module of sorts. Crusssdaddy has suggested we start with hex 0702 (in the middle of The Bottomless Lochs) Javaapp has the Small Hex Generator in the works also. My thoughts in the other thread: "We should have a group project. * Have a map detailed on a group selected hex from the main map. * Have members of the community select a subhex (or two or three) each to do a write up. Can be simple NPC or monster encounters, villages, keeps/castles or dungeon, etc.. * When all sub-hexes are submitted, we alter the map slightly to have a map icon that reflects the nature of the encounter (optional)" EDIT: Here is a temporary map of HEX 0702. Only thing in it so far is a rough outline of the lakes. The original map is from Judges Guild www.judgesguild.org/downloads/Blank%20Hex%20Sheets.pdf (Thanks to Javaapp for providing the link ;D ) This is here to allow people wanting to participate, to choose a sub-hex (or multiple if you wish) to get started.

Doh! Why didn't I think of this before! The cover of Blue Oyster Cult's Cultosaurus Erectus! The landscape and mutant dinosaur just scream Carcosa. I really need to see more episodes of Adventure Time. Most the episodes I have seen have been really good. Though the last one I saw seemed boring, though that might have just been my mindset at the time... How long those "Ugly Stickers" been around? They seem so familiar in a "days of long ago" sense.

javaapp: I am looking forward to it! ;D Anything that makes map making easier is cool with me. I would also like to see what you have done so far. I would also be cool with winging it with what you have crusssdaddy: I had to check, center of the Bottomless Lochs. This should be interesting! ;D

As much as I would love to do all 400, it might take some time...hehe
We should have a group project. * Have a map detailed on a group selected hex from the main map. * Have members of the community select a subhex (or two or three) each to do a write up. Can be simple NPC or monster encounters, villages, keeps/castles or dungeon, etc.. * When all sub-hexes are submitted, we alter the map slightly to have a map icon that reflects the nature of the encounter (optional)
For those that follow blogs, Joesky the Dungeon Brawler had his Carcosa adventure passed around and it was added to by others. That was really entertaining!
So anyone up for this group project?

I have similar thoughts on the vegetation and was planning on having the khopesh be a common sword type in my campaigns. Though with the jungles I have wide variety of prehistoric and alien plant life planned. Some I have drawn up and others are just in the description phase. I got a list of various plants, fungi and minerals that I started for my Carcosa book of alchemy. When I get that a bit more detailed I will post it here on the board and my blog. One of the exotic domesticated critters I have thrown into my game (and to my surprise the players often refer to it by name) is the Goar. From my blog: Goar Armor Class: 5 [13] Hit Dice: 3-4 Attack: bite (1D8) or claw (1D6) Special: None Move: 14 The Goar appear to be evolved from synapsids. It shares reptilian and mammal traits. It has a reptilian body, rodent like incisors, boar like tusks and horns like a goat.(plus a few other smaller horns) They also have tufts of thick fur on their chins. Some villagers have domesticated Goars as riding animals. They can move rather fast when they need to. The illustration only an example. There are many subspecies who possess different patterns and colors. Like rodents, Goars need to gnaw on wood or bones to grind down their incisors. These creatures are omnivores, though prefer meat.

Crusssdaddy's Map of HEX 1013, linked from his blog over at "The Doomed World of CARCOSA"Here you go. I am looking forward to what you do with the area. EDIT - Not sure if the picture is coming up half missing to anyone else or not. I left it as is because 90% of the time the problem is just for me and everyone else can see the linked image fine.

Hey, Crussdaddy, post your maps as well! Yes! I am in hopes he has some more maps I might have missed. Would be cool to see them all in one place. Being 100% honest, his recent map work is what inspired me to redo my maps in a bigger format, instead of the smaller format you mentioned Javaapp.

I was just checking and my dedicated "Carcosa Inspiration Folder" of art is at just under 500 megabytes now. It's nuts, but I keep various folders for inspiration for animals, monsters, alien environments, fungi, etc... I just reference them when I need inspiration for an adventure scenario. Deviantart is absolutely perfect for finding inspiration for Carcosa. Malcadon, that is definitely the kind of art that I use for inspiring my vision of Carcosa. Though that second pic does not suprise me that it's from Portland Mercury. They have some crazy art on their newspapers. Just a few I had bookmarked from over there: Frozen wasteland - revisedby *merl1ncz -This picture makes me want to run a game in the Frozen Wastes of Carcosa. This is how I picture it now too. Lil Hasturby ~HasturtheUnspeakable Spawn of Shub Niggurath 001by ~JohnMBlaz -he may even be a member here... fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/072/2/d/spawn_of_shub_niggurath_001_by_johnmblaz-d4spemy.jpg[/IMG] Carcosa faux-pen-and-inkby ~yang Then there is the art for Crusssdaddy's blog "The Doomed World CARCOSA" thedoomedworldcarcosa.wordpress.com/category/carcosa/ I love that edit!

Thanks! ;D I am doing it with Paint Shop Pro 7. (I really need to upgrade someday) I have a blank template that I copy and paste the assorted icons into. Then when done I make a second copy of the map and I got two other overlays to fix hex borders that I put lakes/river on and another for the subhex number inserts. Here is the blank template to get you started. I have tons of icons but no easy way to manage them. If you want I could put them in a zip and email them to you or anyone else who wants to use them. EDIT - I had uploaded these maps at 2400 pixels wide format, though photobucket appears to have re-sized them all to almost half that.

I will probably end up making more of these maps than I will ever get around to detailing and using myself. Hopefully these can help DMs who need a hex fleshed out in a hurry. The hexes are 651.851 yard scale. Why? Because I am a dork and do most my work late at night and didn't realize I had too many hexes on my main template for 704 yard scale... I got like five (10 mile) hexes finished before I realized that. I will get around to a legend for the map icons at some point. yellow tan hexes are plains or at least low lands, gray hexes are badlands of various types, light brown are hills, be they rolling or broken. Dark brown are mountains. Vegetation areas are assumed to be mild in vegetation unless it is filled in with dark green. The silhouettes are for various monster or npc encounters. HEX 0606The lake in this hex is the source of a local undead outbreak. HEX 0607Subhex 1208 is a Space Alien Arcology. In my game it is a social experiment for the Space Aliens to train various type of men in ways that the Aliens might find useful. There are a number of nearby water processing stations that sends water via pipeline to the arcology. The light gray lines are pipelines. HEX 0608HEX 0706HEX 0707HEX 0805If you started characters out in 2005, these can help flesh out nearby hexes. The dark tan areas are ancient dried up lake beds. Light blue lakes have high toxic mineral content. HEX 1905HEX 2004
