Hi All, Has it been said in any of the 1st ed books, articles, etc. how much time has passed since the disaster? "The Total Person in MetAl" (Dragon 14) mentions ninth generation mutants. If we call a generation ~30 years that's 270 years. I'm cool with that but has a tighter time been stated? Thanks much, Legion

... can you point to any writings or interviews which are clearly attributed to Gygax where he expresses a similar thought? No, that's actually why I started this thread. I'm hoping to find it. I get it. You don't think he said it. Thanks for your input.

So it's been said, I allow for the possibility I have the precise wording incorrect. What I'm after is something -- from Gary Gygax -- that comes close enough to be considered the same.
I am also willing to accept he never said it. But that raises the question of why so many people think he did.
E.g.,:
"Character background is what happens between Level 1 and 6" - E Gary Gygax"
"I think Gary Gygax once said 'the first 6 levels are the character's back story.'"
I don't have to look hard to find people quoting it as something from Gygax. What I haven't been able to do is find Gygax saying it.

Hi All, Can some kind soul point me to the source in which Gygax said "the first six levels *are* the characters' backstory"? This does not sound like a Gygax quote. Be that as it may, there are a fair few people who disagree with you. Safe to say you don't know the source then?

d**n. That's a good one. It may be that this "quote" I'm after is in actual fact a broadly-held sensibility. Ah well. That's good too.

I'm pretty sure that the first six levels are backstory thing comes from Monte Cook and 3e. It was his justification for why you couldn't have prestige classes start any lower. As I said elsewhere, can you give me that source, so this isn't just the same vaporous "quote" attached to a different person's name? I am really quite fascinated that so many people know this so-called quote but nobody -- so far -- can point to its source.

For something I've seen quoted a fair few times online I'm having a hell of a time finding him actually saying it.
Thanks much,

Sorry for lag. I play 1st ed, now from the Goodman Games deluxe hardcover. Robot PC rules are from Dragon 14. There are solid reasons in that article for assuming Robot PCs (which -- according to the back-story -- are of post-catastrophe construction) aren't as well built as the much older ship-controlled 'bots. I don't intend to impose CON on Robot PCs in any other way than workmanship of construction, an idea also suggested in the article's fatigue, malfunction and damage text. As I said I really want the base number of 13 + 1d5 (i.e., 14) for my conversions to Mutants and Death Ray Guns (which you can find here: interloperminiatures.com/files/2015/03/MetAl-MuDRaG-and-back01.pdf ). So CON for Robot PCs will be sort of a vapor stat. I don't give Mutants a vapor Leadership Potential stat though, so my jury is still a bit out.

OK then.
Under Physical Weapons it gives base STR 12, +2 for (per?) 10 power points invested. A friend just pointed that out.
And for CON I've decided on 12+1d6, maybe 14+1d4. I like the randomness to allow for Friday jobs, use of make-do materials, etc. I need the CON stat more for conversion of 'bots to Mutants and Death Ray Guns than for MetAl games but I'll find a use for it in the latter as well.
[Edit: I'll consider 'bot CON as workmanship of construction. I'm sure I can find a use for that!]
[2nd Edit: I'm going with 13+1d5 for CON. It does everything I need. I'll think about whether or not I want to work that into the as-is fatigue and malfunction rules. Doable and maybe even desirable.]

Hi All, Is there a rules-as-written way to determine Robot PC Constitution and Strength? The point-buy rules determine the Resistances and Dex; that part I get. Thanks, Legion

I have seen that cutaway (I'm eagerly awaiting my Goodman gear). But the radical compression in that illo of ship features threw me 'til your mention of it. Now looking at it again I've come up with some ideas. Thanks.

How do you guys envision them?
Inclined Planes are 100 meters wide, spiral ramps are 15 metres wide (I've converted my Warden to metric).
But to accomplish 200, 400 and 800 metre rises, Inclined Planes would have to be either really long straights or switch-backs.
The same rise for a spiral ramp would be a ridiculous distance to walk. So what, grav sleds in them too? Or maybe low- or no-grav rope tows along the walls? Futurama-style vacc-tubes? That corkscrew would be murder if you had vertigo.
Thoughts?

Hi All, Has anyone written one for anything up to the mid-80s? Thanks much, Legion
Edit: I'm especially interested in the early Imperial period, specifically 1st century A.D. Thanks again, L

Hi All,
Yeah, so is there one?
Off the cuff, do you have an ideal size -- let's say in square miles -- for a sandbox campaign? At least at the start?
Thanks,
Legion

Or Lammasu. I'm not sure how they spell it as I've never seen the packaging.
Can anyone tell me how big it is?
Specifically, is it a close-ish match to Otherworld's Manticore?
If you could do me a solid and give me actual measurements that would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Legion

I was just flipping through the Pathfinder Bestiary 4 at my FLGS.
There are some pretty cool creatures in there.
Has anyone created a conversion cheat sheet for PF-to-any of the clones?
Thanks much and Merry Christmas,

Hi All,
This is a two parter:
1) Does anyone know the date -- to the day -- of the release and sale of the first copy of D&D in '74?
2) Do you have any plans to celebrate same?
Thanks much,
Legion
