What was the year you played D&D for the first time? To the best of your recollection. For some this may be an educated guess This place needs a poll!!!

I put '79, but it may have been '78. I'm pretty sure I was 8 at the time, so that'd be 1979.

My mom was my first DM. She's not as cool as she used to be, but then again who among us is?

Bought the books in 1974, but didn't play till 1977 (didn't know any other gamers).

Late 1977. I still have my old white box . . .

I no longer have my white box, and it was only a 2d or 3rd printing, but it was 1976 (mayyyybe 1975) - our first daughter was still a toddler, so it couldn't have been too much into 1976. Same year, I picked up Tunnels and Trolls, and discovered a use for my improvisation training.

For me it was August, 1975, and just about the time school was getting ready to start. Funny, because I always thought I remembered that my friend got D&D for Christmas but he told me recently that it had been a late birthday present. Funny how the brain does that. I'm missing the "2000 and beyond" alternative It does seem like a couple more options would be nice, particularly since I already see a spike in the 1991+ option.

1976; I got the white box set (4th printing) for my birthday in March. The game was going by the time school ended; I was in high school and we had a wargaming club, so initial recruits weren't that hard to come by.

I'm waffling on whether it was '81 or '82...

1982, same as Zenopus. I learned to play with Moldvay B/X but the set I bought was Holmes.

1994, although I'd done a solo introductory scenario in 1993.

Late 1980. I had the Holmes basic set (the one with B2 and chits), the Monster Manual, and the following dice:
6-siders 4-sider 12-sider 20-sider
Yep. For some reason I didn't buy an 8-sider or a 10-sider when I made my purchase (though I soon rectified that). Since my 20-sider was numbered 0-9 twice, it was simple to use it in lieu of a 10-sider or an 8-sider.

1991 or early 1992. AD&D 2e, mostly, but also a free mix of 1e and 2e with my uncle and cousins, and I owned the Rules Cyclopedia (kicking myself for selling it). I had been reading 1e and ”Classic” D&D books since '87 or '88, but I was a kid, and it took me a while to convince my parents to actually let me play (for various reasons they bought into some of the anti-RPG rhetoric in the '80s).

Summer of 1991 I believe. Started with the Big Black Box purchased from a B.Dalton Booksellers.
After playing through it, we went to the local game store and the guy showed us Advanced D&D 2nd edition and the Rules Cyclopedia. We chose Advanced. Cause you know... it was advanced. And kids love that kind of thing.
Should have went with Rules Cyclopedia.

Yeah, I didn't realize I guess how many 'late bloomers' there would be. It is a good thing to see. Also I was getting lazy after entering in all the dates up to that point

The first time I ever played Dungeons & Dragons was around 1983, and that was with the action figures by Ljn. I did not know that the RPG existed or what an RPG in fact was. I also had the D&D colorforms and Shrinky Dinks. I watched the cartoon every Saturday, and it was my favorite. Somewhere, I saw a TSR D&D add in a comic book (the Red Box), but it went no further than that. Then, around 1991, I finally played AD&D. I believe the fellow had a 2nd Edition Players Handbook and DMG. I also seem to remember a Deities & Demigods book with the Erol Otus cover. However, he would roll a 100-sided die and cover it with his hand. I think he was actually having us roll against that. I played a Chaotic Evil Mage and did not last very long. I remember thinking that the dice were really weird.

I think it might have been as far back as late '79, but definitely by '80. Also was introduced to miniatures wargaming about that same time, though didn't get into the wargaming hobby full-blast until after college.
Sadly I don't currently have a HMW gang to play with. I'm afraid that most wargamers (who were in age between that of my parents and grandparents) have shuffled off. *kicks can in frustration*

Fall of 1980 for me. Moldvay Basic, one of the few B-day gifts I asked for that I actually received. It's been a whirlwind romance ever since!

1976, possibly 1975. I know I'd already learned to play from a friend who was a year older, and he learned from a teacher when he started junior high. When I started junior high, I was thinking I'd be able to play D&D. So, definitely by summer 1976, but possibly as early as Nov-Dec 1975. I think I have vague recollections of playing in winter, so maybe...

2000 was my first session (2e).
2001 was my first real attempt at seeing what the fuss was all about (3e adventure game starter box).
2002-05 didn't play. Wasn't interested.
2005 was my first time playing 1e, and 0e, and have since been making up for lost time.
