February 2007, I was thirteen at the time, going on fourteen. We used 3.5 for the rules as that was available at the time and my dad was the DM. It was very fun.

Spring 1980.I was 8, my cousin (13 years old) was DM, my brother (13) the other player. My first time ever as tabletop player. I bought my first box (moldvay) a couple of years later.

I believe it was 1978, maybe 1977. There was a campaign being run at our local game store (The Point of Conflict, Fairport, NY) and I somehow got to play a fighter for a whole session or so. I distinctly remember it was being run from the LBBs; there were references among the other players to White Puff Ball spells, which only existed in the Conan stuff in Gods, Demigods & Heroes as far as I know. I remember nothing about the actual play except the "sound of giant footsteps" in the dungeon that turned out to be a dwarf wearing giant boots, and trying to pay an NPC with "a dollar" (forgot about gold pieces) and being told he didn't want that weird paper.

Fairprot, another Western New Yorker! Yay! Never knew about that store sadly...

1988 for me, when I was a wee 4th grader at the time. Since then I have played all editions and acquired a copy of the game that came out before I was born. I love this game!

Around 1982 or 1983, with Moldvay and 1E.

Freshman year of high school, which would have been the Fall of '80. Started with Mentzer boxed set and moved to AD&D a short time after. Still have all my original books and the boxed set.

1977: Holmes Basic, supplemented by Greyhawk, Blackmoor, and Eldritch Wizardry (and then the AD&D books as they were gradually released).

It was the end of the summer of '79. I remember that the DMG was brand new and that we all were mad that we didn't start playing at the beginning of the summer since we missed all that time.
I started with a version of Holmes with B2 and chits and absolutely no knowledge of how the game was supposed to be played. I'd never seen it being played before I became the DM.

Fairprot, another Western New Yorker! Yay! Never knew about that store sadly... I also fondly remember Campaign Headquarters in Rochester, where I bought my first edition AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide. There was also a hobby store by the Canal in Penfield where I bought Traveller. Maybe we should start a thread on reminiscing about favorite gaming stores we've known...

1977 with Holmes Basic, although I didn't own my own books until 1979 or 1980 when I bought the MM, PHB, and DMG all at once; I distinctly remember waiting for the release of D&DG.

Summer of 1978 with a buddy's Holmes Basic.
We quickly added the AD&D books as we found them.

2001 for me. Played a few games of 1e with an older guy before a friend and I convinced my school friends to start our own game. Bought and played 3/3.5 for quite a few years but I always had a soft spot for old school which has only solidified over time.

I'm not exactly sure. I think it was some time between 79' and 80'. It was B2 w/ AD&D books.

I'm not entirely sure for myself. I know I got the Moldvay '81 Basic Set, the DMG, and the PH for Christmas as my first D&D products, but I'm not sure which year that was. I also played before I got those, with a friend who had played but didn't have any books and only had a vague concept of the rules. We rolled up the six abilities with 3d6, rolled up some gold, made up our own brief equipment list, then the dungeon master drew an abstract overland map consisting of things like "town over here, forest over here, mountains over here, straight lines between them are roads." Then the players (usually myself and my brother) said what they wanted their characters to do, and the DM made up the things that happened to them, based on their ability scores. There were no game rules. It really was D&D, but it only had a tenuous connection to any actual rules. We spent a lot of time jumping over lava flows and getting enspelled by witches.
I've put in my best guess as 1981, when I was eight years old.

I distinctly remember waiting for the release of D&DG. Yes! I remember being so stoked for that. When I got it, I recall my friends and I pouring through it and everyone exclaiming, "I'm gonna be a Cleric and worship xxxx!". It was nice to have because of the lack of deities in the Greyhawk folio, and the inability to find a copy of the OD&D version at the time. I still have that book (the good one, with all the "copyright" stuff still intact). Ah, good times.

I love this thread. Especially all the "but you don't have X year!" posts Hilarious, and also fantastic to see that so many discovered the original game fun late. It says something about the quality of a game when it still finds new players more than 40 after its inception.

It's a more natural process than you might think, actually - if you played RC D&D, like me, and didn't specifically like/connect with TSR's Mystara line, you'd eventually end up with Judges Guild stuff. From there to OD&D it's not that big of a leap to make.
Personally, I try to be honest about things: I run DCC RPG, these days, mostly, because I'm not a man out of my time. That doesn't mean that I do not draw on older material, though - for example, my favorite gaming resources are, indeed, JG's 70s run, and, for the last few years, the old White Dwarf Mag. In most other places on the web, people are either snobbish about their newer stuff being shinier than mine, or don't know/care what I am talking about.
...So that's how I ended up here.

I think I started playing around 1996 or 1997, with kids at school running AD&D 2e, Gamma World, and Toon. I started getting my own rulebooks and so forth in 1999 or 2000. I stuck with 2e when 3e came out, found the OSR, and began working my way backwards.

1997 - Started playing. The DM ran AD&D 2e with FR and PS.
2000 - I didn’t like anything about 3e other than the stuff that “returned” from 1e, so, I checked out 1e instead. Anyway, I was really getting into Greyhawk at the time.
2002 - Started my long-running hybrid AD&D/OD&D hybrid Greyhawk/Blackmoor campaign.

The newbies have pulled ahead! It might be time for a follow-up poll, breaking down when they started playing, post 1991. The newbies are everyone that started playing after 1971, with Arneson, up through early 1974 (with Arneson & Gygax). Gotta keep those dates straight. Besides, the newbies have not pulled ahead, there are just more of them.
