Allan, I haven't been able to get your website ( www.black-blade-publishing.com/ ) to work for weeks. Is it just me, or have you abandoned it, or is it a work in progress? John H. informed me that the site is being rebuilt at the moment. However, they are still open for business. You can email John directly with requests (tacojohndm -at- yahoo -dot- com).

This is a good answer for almost any question. I think I'll steal it and use it forever. Just avoid saying it was after your time...

OD&D/Chainmail and AD&D. Ten-second rounds were first mentioned (mistakenly?) in Holmes Basic, but became the norm in B/X editions and beyond.

The linked thread needs to be archived - just like the Blue Room. EDIT: I'm going for it. 25% 88% complete... EDIT: Well, I finished "archiving"... but I see that the thread is still active (as of yesterday), so I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it and keep archiving! hopefully Chirine doesn't mind. The stuff he and Gronan (and others) talk about is simply fantastic and well worth immortalizing - can't wait to read the book(s). And great questions, greentongue ! Nobody asked me. Now, I don't mind, myself, but if you want a more direct way to talk to me I did restart my account here. At this point, I only have accounts on Havard's Blackmoor forum, the RPGSite, and here. These are all RPG forums; I didn't think anyone would be interested in my posts on miniatures sites like LAF or RP. I would like to get a copy of the archive, though. My e-mail is chirine@aethervox.net ; thanks! Apologies; it was not my intention to pirate your thread. It's a rich and fascinating trove (to me at least), and I was preserving it for future reading. I shall pay my shamtla in full: (A rather large) email sent. And welcome back, Chirine! EDIT: Hmmmm... the email bounced (too big). I'll have to split it up.

I suspected as much. Intelligent weapons always felt out of place to me in Tekumel. I agree, but I really like the exceptional rarity (in the Professor's game) and that it could be an AI - that feels like Tekumel (to me at least).

Welcome Gene M. ! Yep, this is a great place to hang - much less "drama" than other hangouts.

Which reminds me, is it "IX" or "Ix"? Or is it just plain old "Nine"?

On this 40th anniversary of the Star Wars film, I am re-reading its novelization (ghost written by Alan Dean Foster in 1976). I will follow this up with his sequel entitled Splinter of the Mind's Eye, also written in 1976 but not published until 1978. I loved reading these as a kid. I remember watching Empire Strikes Back for the first time in the theater and thinking after the Hoth battle, "Waitaminute! Shouldn't Leia be with Luke right now?"

Except of course when the players blunder into a teleportation trap that dumps them in an identical area, but it's oriented differently (a la B1).

That's a ridiculous price to pay when the stories are freely available for reading at Eldritch Dark. I copied all of the stories into a word processor document and converted it to a PDF so I can read them on my Nook. I did the same thing for his Hyperborea and Zothique cycles. If you do this yourself, here's the Averoigne list I followed (from Wikipedia): Perhaps one day Barnes and Noble will add Mr. Smith to their Collectible Editions line-up. The complete HPL and John Carter versions they did are great... and they're only $20 (less if you have a coupon or order on line).

Another option is to roll "open doors" checks for everyone involved in barring/forcing the door (+1 to the roll for high Strength maybe). The party with the most successes "wins". I'd limit the action to three medium sized participants per side of the door.

Not sure if I'll read the book or not (I'd rather read the stories than read about someone else reading the stories), but I'm in agreement with many of his "discoveries" on his blog regarding his experience with the Appendix N material.

Lately I've been delving into the obscure and reading very old pulp magazines; particularly Planet Stories and Avon Fantasy Reader. There are a ton of them on archive.org. They contain many of the authors mentioned in Appendix N but also many who are lesser known. Whoa! Nice! Thanks for this HH; time to download some old Weird Tales pulp to my Nook!

foxroe: Black Blade has one copy of #1 and four copies of #3 still in stock. If you're interested, email Jon Hershberger at tacojohndm@yahoo.com and we'll at least be able to help you buy copies of those issues. Allan. Sweet. Email sent. Thanks Allan!

Hi , unfortunately I do not have any back issues of the zine available. The magazine is, however, not quite dead. I am hoping to get out issue #7 this summer and will announce it's release here and among other internet sub-dwellings. Thank you. Drat. Any chance the old issues will be released in PDF form on DriveThru or some other outlet?

If there are no longer any original tissues, "mummy" is not at all appropriate. Dino click-bait! Hey, their words, not mine. Or are they... Moo-hah-hah-HAH!!!

Hey scalydemon, any copies of these left? In particular, the issues with AS&SH content. Your blog says 'nope', but I'm hoping that's a typo.

Perhaps it was intentional? Certainly later editions went with more diverse NPC parties, likely because it was more representative of player parties (maybe to encourage rivalry, competition, or cooperation). Maybe encountering parties of homogeneous makeup was inspired by "Appendix N" literature? They seem more appropriate for specific goal orientation - questing superheroes (a la Knights of the Round Table, or the Argonauts), a cabal of sorcerers searching for the Door to Saturn, an Inquisition of High Priests hunting the previous heretical High Priest, etc. I wouldn't say it was good or bad; it's juts part of the flavor of OD&D.

"As long as we get to eye-ball the programming after. I've heard stories of pirates using code-junkies to program in mis-jumps and back-doors to make hijacking easier." Sharron says matter-of-factually.

It could make for a nice series of linked encounters too. The party, patrols, and hunting party are looking for a renegade Druid (fools!) and the predators have been sent by Ros to harry the would be pursuants.

Balrogs are found on both the dungeon and wilderness encounters, as well as retainers for castle occupants. In ad&d they are listed on at least one of the wandering monster tables in the dmg appendicies. Granted these are unknown balrogs rather than known balrogs, but I don't think you can say that there are only supposed to be 6 balrogs in all of greyhawk. However, it has unique implications if those random encounters are limited to six Balrog. How powerful are those castle dwellers? What possible purpose could one of those encountered Balrog have?
