What was it about 5E that didn't float your boat?

High-level play I'm guessing?

I've had to create two "page twos" for the character sheet. One cleric with spells and room for a few other items and one with magic-user spells with little or no spare room. In fact, I'm still going on the MU spells as there's heaps of 'em.

I occasionally glance at the massive fifth edition D&D display at the local game store thinking "might be nice to give latest version a spin..."
Then I look at the three books totalling over one-thousand pages and come reeling back to my senses.
I spent about $15 AUD (including postage which was the largest part of the transaction) on Simon's Delving Deeper Compendium and that's kept me happy for over a year. The three new books will cost between #$150 and $180 AUD.
Could some kindly soul please tell an old worn-out gamer what he might find in these new pages to spark the imagination?
A fellow old-schooler on the Holmes G+ page told me that the new rules are "streamlined" which sounds good but we're still talking about one-thousand pages! Is it mostly "fluff"?
Many thanks
Mike

Looks thorough and clean. I like it. Maybe you could do a back for spells and a log of encounters. What would you like to see in an Encounter Log (if there's enough space)?

Apologies the droll title.
Here's a plan I'm working on, in a slow and steady sort of way, for combat.
My goal is to change the steps for determining a hit and, to a degree, determining damage.
Step 1: throw your hit dice (d6) a 5 - 6 results in one "hit" (I'm also experimenting with just a "6" hitting). Combatants with a "+" such as a level 1 Fighting-Man adds that value as a modifier. If you throw more than one die and have more than one "+", you decide which dice to modify.
Step 2: throw 2 dice and consult a chart indexing weapon type (1 - 12) versus armour class (9 - 2) to determine if the "hit" causes damage (penetrated defences).
Step 3: if the attack penetrates and causes damage the defender loses one hit die per hit sustained and is dead at zero hit dice. Optionally (but likely), lose 1 - 6 hit points too; this might result in a situation where you're out of hit dice (so can't fight) but are still staggering around with a handful of hit points remaining, barely able to hold on to your innards.
Early stages yet. No idea about heroes and superheroes or daring exploits such as parrying. A work in progress.
Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I haven't used it but I'm keen to incorporate it at some stage so I'm keen to learn what others have to say on the matter.

All of these sheets list too many armour class entries, running to -3 in some instances. Just 9 to 2 please.

OK Simon, I've pencilled in all the errata and did a bit of cut (scissors) and paste (glue) with the section on Treasure Guarded by Monsters which was a bit too lengthy to amend by hand. My copy is getting some heavy use so I thought I'd donate it to the players and buy a nice shiny "errata free" copy but I can wait. Not a big fan of the whole waiting thing though.

Hi Simon,
I note Lulu only appears to have version 4a available in print-form.
Will 4b be uploaded in due course?
Thanks

I loved this game. The campaign elements were amazing and the rules themselves were delivered in stages so a basic game could be over pretty quickly.

Hi Waysof,
I'm glad that DD is not "dead", it is a thing of beauty that deserves to live on. I will be snapping up a copy of the limited koala-fur bound edition. Failing that, the hardcover.
What do I like about Hinterlands? Everything. It's a "real" game of D&D. Delving Deeper and all of the other games that choose not to challenge the primacy of the original rules, those that pay homage to game that never was if you will, interest me much less than a house-ruled set.
I say "game that never was" because no one ever played OD&D the way it was intended because: a) without a direct internet line to the designers, players took the game in there own direction and b) the original game didn't work "as is" you had to house-rule the gaps (yeah, yeah, I know I'll get flamed for that heresy).
House ruled games are first and foremost personal but secondly, they work. In that case of your material it not only works for you but also for an uninitiated and unwashed heathen such as myself due to the quality of writing. The kind of organisation that just wasn't possible back in the day is a cut and paste away.
So, Delving Deeper, love it. Long may she reign. But your best work is yet to come.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oiy, oiy, oiy.

Waysof...
Yonks ago. Possibly even years, I distinctly remember begging you to make your house-ruled version of O&DD available to a) the gaming public at large, for a price if needs be and b) me in particular.
Your answer at the time was along the lines of "no, can't busy with Delving Deeper and...blah...blah..." etc.
So.
Delving Deeper is out there. There's a note on your site next to the latest text that reads "no plans for further revision". Very sad. But, life goes on.
Please (I'm on my virtual knees here), please let loose your Hinterlands game.

Magnificent news. I've already played the module when it sat on Xerxes website and it went down a treat with my crew. I'll definitely snap up the updated Necropolis to take advantage of the tasty new content. Thanks!

My stapled version of the rules arrived today. It's a thing of beauty. The staples themselves seem to be made of thick titanium. No way these babies are breakin'. Pages, crisp and white, cover striking. Love it. I'll post some photos tonight.

Saddle stitched version bought and paid for!
Incidentally, the total price including shipping came in at $16.77 AUD which is VERY reasonable indeed!
Now the hard part. The waiting...
