(PS. Are you coming to CincyCon? Perhaps I can bring a 15mm army and we can squeeze a game of HOTT in?) You’d need two; I don’t have any 15s. Cincycon is still up in the air, though unfortunately I’m leaning “no”. I’ll be talking to my brother this weekend...

I bought Featherstone's Victorian Colonial Warfare, his Small Colonial Wars, and some 25mm ESCI Zulus and British and plan to put both Fire & Steel as well as The Sword and the Flame to use. I also have some Pathans, so I could also eventually game the Northwest Frontier at some point. Vivat Regina Victoria Imperatrix!

I played, and enjoyed, Nine Years from Compass Games. This is an operational-level game that covers the Nine Years War between France and most of Western Europe, from 1688 to 1696 (also known as the War of the Grand Alliance and the War of the League of Augsburg). My game actually turned into the Twelve Years War, as it's possible to extend the war beyond its historic end date. The Alliance won a Minor Victory, but this wasn't confirmed till the last battle of the last player round, when Max Emmanuel and his Austrian-Bavarian force beat off a French army twice their size at Clermont. Back in Versailles, the Sun King wept bitter tears. . . .

Recently I played a few games of Root by Leder Games. Inspired by COIN games, but with a very short play time. Now I have Outreach (1976) from SPI on the table.

I've salivated over those off and on, but never bought any, on account of not having a cheap way to do full color printing or providing them with storage space that won't crumple them all up. But the idea of paper flats is always on my mind. I love the look of flats yet know that I'll never own a collection, so paper models are the ideal substitute.

I haven't built up enough of them yet to matter — I've got a few ECW and related buildings, some Republican Romans and Carthaginian units (elephants FTW!), and I bought the Greeks just on principle — but I think you might find some decent plastic storage options at one of those Japanese dollar stores. Alternately, a banker box with some crafty layers would work. But I hear you on the printing.

OK, so I played through "The Missing" mission for "Rangers Of The Shadow Deep." It is presented in two separate scenarios, so I have two separate blog postings for it. Of course, I have used all kinds of cardstock standees and terrain. Played the first scenario today with my son. We even discovered Aventine and his magic sword. My Barbarian was laid low though and potentially diseased. He just barely made his Health roll. Very similar mechanics to JM's Frostgrave game. We'll probably run the second scenario later this week or next weekend.

Played Lords of Waterdeep for the first time this weekend. It was fun, although playing it online via the app is probably not how its best experienced....

I played World War II Commander: Battle of the Bulge from Compass Games. This is an area-movement, divisional-scale game, with a few brigades thrown in. Each day has several alternating German and Allied impulses; in each impulse, the respective commander can activate, and fight with, all the units in one area, who are then "done" for the rest of the day. In combat, you throw a number of d10s equal to a unit's current combat strength, and hit on a roll equal or under to its "to hit" number (which can be modified by several circumstances). In my game, the Germans came on strong initially, and even pushed one SS Panzer division across the Meuse, before they were beaten back. The Allies won on points on the last possible turn. A neat little game, in my opinion.

Two recent games from Compass and Worthington, respectively:
Amerika Bomber: Evil Queen of the Skies is an adaptation and inversion of Avalon-Hill's old B-17: Queen of the Skies. The premise here is that the Axis has won the war in Europe, but the U.S. is still holding out, so Hitler unleashes his Amerika Bomber offensive against eastern and central America in 1947. Flying long-range bombers from the German base in the Azores, my pilot completed a year's worth of missions, and culminated his tour of duty by dropping an atomic bomb on New York City on his very last sortie. So, a decisive victory--for the bad guys.
Struggle for Europe 1939-1945 is a high-level strategic game of WWII in Europe, completely card-driven--no dice are used, even for combat resolution. Each side has three decks of cards, one for the start of the war, one for when Russia enters the war, and one for when the U.S. enters the war. Most, but not all, cards can be played again after cycling through the discard pile and then being reshuffled, but some are permanently gone when you play them. My game ended in an Axis victory, on the basis of their having held out with more territory at the end of the war then they did historically.

It has been way too long since I played any wargames. Maybe I'll do a quick solo game this weekend.
