Just picked up a surprisingly pristine copy of AH's Kriegspiel. I've actually never played it before, so I thoroughly intend to look past its weak points and enjoy myself.

Besides actually getting in an OD&D session this month I played Successors by GMT again. I can't think of any other 4 player CDG wargame that does it better.

6 player game of Dune(new printing) Did anything change in the new printing of Dune? Or is it that same game with new art?

6 player game of Dune(new printing) Did anything change in the new printing of Dune? Or is it that same game with new art? I had only played the old version once and it was a few years ago. It seemed like a few minor things changed (improved). Cards used instead of having to jot things down. Optional advanced rules (which we used). Spice amounts listed on board. I may be slightly incorrect on these being changes. The new printing is quite nice.

I met up with a buddy last Eve and got another unplayed game off my shelf o' shame. Troyes, more of a Euro but great art, fun mechanics with layers of decisions and a cool theme. Would like to try it again with 3 or 4 players. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/73439/troyes

I've been working my way through the scenarios in Storms of Steel, a game in the "Conflict of Heroes" series from Academy Games. This is another squad-level take on World War II combat, with this particular installment focused on the fighting at Kursk. The system has been upgraded to the new third edition rules, which I think work very nicely.
The Germans have won six scenarios so far, the Soviets just three. But I'm going to pause for a bit to return to the Shenandoah for the First and Second Battles of Kernstown.

Kernstown, from Revolution Games, offers both battles of Kernstown from the Shenandoah campaigns of 1862 and 1864. It uses the "Blind Swords" regimental-scale combat system, which has become my favorite for American Civil War battles. The rascally Rebs won both fights, a Decisive victory at First Kernstown and a Major victory at Second Kernstown.

More ACW--I played GMT's The U.S. Civil War, the entire conflict on two maps stretching from Philadelphia in the northeast to Houston in the southwest. A fairly detailed system (be sure to get the 2017 revised rules if you play this). Both sides fought to the bitter end, with the North winning on the last possible turn, Spring 1865.

Started playing through C&C Ancients with a friend. We're five scenarios in, and it's been a lot of fun. I'm familiar with the original ACW version, but the Ancients version is much more nuanced. It's taken me a few games to get used to the subtleties, and I'm still feeling like I don't have a strong handle on things tactically. I'm really excited to keep playing through the scenarios though, it's a refreshing breather from the bigger miniature games we usually play.

Just to let my neckbeard flow in the wind a little, battle cry (acw version by Hasbro/ah) was not the first c&c game. It was for napoleonics and it was specifically for playing with miniatures. When GMT revisited napoleonics with Borg and the series it was technically the second pass for Commands & Colors.

I took a detour to the Middle Ages with GMT's Men of Iron. This has six separate battles using a common system. I played the first two, with the Scots winning at Falkirk, and then the French winning at Courtrai. A good system, that has been continued on through three subsequent sets of battles from GMT.

I am doing weekly games of HOTT / Hordes of the Things in 2020. I only have armies for my campaign world, Etinerra, so it's a lot of Bestials (orcs, goblins) vs. Humans. I may have a reason to expand my 15mm armies

They aren't, unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view, I guess). From what I saw, it's still primarily based on 2nd edition DBA. There is a statement in there saying that you might want to convert sizes and movement rates over to the new 3rd edition conventions, but I don't think it actually does that for you.
Actually, aside from that statement, I'm not sure if there's anything different from the previous printing. I had purchased it as a gift to a friend, so I only had a chance to flip through it briefly beforehand.
I don't know what it's called, but I know there's a document floating around the web that's supposed to be a full conversion of HOTT over to DBA 3 rules.
I think it should be simple enough to do on your own, as well. My preferred way to play HOTT is to run it as DBA, only referring to the HOTT book to consult statistics and combat results for fantasy units. Works pretty much without a hitch, so I'd imagine it would be just as easy doing the same thing but with DBA 3.

Have you tried the latest version of the rules? I have enjoyed dba3 and assume the newish hott is similarly presented There is no new 'official' version of HOTT, it still stands as 2.1 which was released in the mid 2000s (IIRC). There are a couple of unofficial mods to HOTT that merge it with DBA3. HOT2DBA3 is one I'm familiar with. It does play/feel like DBA3, but I find that the 2.1 version suits my needs very well. I've played DBA 3 and I'm probably just not experienced enough/good enough to feel that there are significant differences in how the game plays from 2.1 to 3. I do like the base width as the common measurement mechanic versus 'paces' for readability sake. How often do you play DBA or HOTT?

Okay, I've just looked through the preview of the current printing (Lulu, version 2.1, published February 2, 2019: link), and it does seem like it's exactly the same old version 2.1 that's been around since 2014. There's this bit in there, page 8: "NOTE: DBA 3.0 uses the new and convenient scale of one base width equals 100 paces. Players are invited to try this alternative scale for these rules." From threads on Board Game Geek, it seems that there are only two differences between HOTT 2 and HOTT 2.1: the first was to switch the move rates of shooters and warbands (which was already an errata from HOTT 1, IIRC), and the second was to add the note about DBA 3's upcoming scale change (DBA 3 came out about 6 months after HOTT 2.1).

I was under the impression that the most recent printing (black book) was an updated ruleset to match the updated DBA/dbm ruleset. Thanks for setting that straight I don't actually own the latest but think I might hit Amazon.co.uk to grab it. Dbx is one of those game series I return to again and again. I haven't played recently but your posts are encouraging me to break out some of the minis and setup a big battle!

HOTT is one of those war games I've been meaning to try but never got around to playing. I once joked about doing a zombies vs. lawn flamingos scenarios. Maybe someday....

We are still playing HotT 1.0 at my house, but everybody has recently gotten 2.1 AND DBA 3.0, so we;ll see if we end up with one of the HotT unofficial updates...after we figure out the nuances of 3.0.

The nuances might deserve another thread elsewhere, or a PM. I hope you post pictures! There probably will be, but likely not for a couple of months, #2 son got the first DBA 3.0 book back in the fall, and announced that he planned to work on his El Cid project, but grad school has been keeping him busy. He did decide that he wanted to keep the work down by abandoing the house standard of mounting everything in two ranks on 40mm deep bases (4, 6, or 8 foot) and go to the regulation base depths in order to reduce the amount of painting. When son #1 got 3.0 for Christmas, he embraced that idea as well, and has ben painting a fresh army of Hittites to supplement his earlier one. I’ve been working on some Libyans, and rebased the chariots from my New Kingdom Egyptian army, but this may not hit the table until two “regulation: armies are available. Or we might pit his new Hittites against my extra deep Egyptians...Either way, probably a few weeks. But I’ll try to get it blogged and posted when we do.

I'm jealous that you have a willing and painting participant! Enjoy! Can't wait to read your battles and live vicariously through them! (PS. Are you coming to CincyCon? Perhaps I can bring a 15mm army and we can squeeze a game of HOTT in?)
