Went to the local monthly boardgame meetup this eve. Played 'San Juan' for the 1st time. Light card based game but sort of fun. Also some one busted out 'Escape from Atlantis'. Sort of corny little game very light.

I like San Juan a lot. I owned Puerto Rico for many years but it almost never got played, so I traded it for SJ. SJ gets played all the time, and I daresay captures 95% of what makes PR great.

San Juan I saw the potential in from the one play. I will be much better at it the next time as now I have seen all the cards and have a feel for the timing of things. We had 4 players which seemed like a fun amount for the game (only one of the 5 tablet things didn't get picked each round)

Got in games of both Second World War at Sea: SOPAC (Battle of the Coral Sea) and Jutland (using miniatures instead of counters). Coral Sea: My Japanese faired ok, I suppose, though neither side had much luck in air attacks. By the time we called it, we'd both lost most of our air wings with only some light to moderate damage on a few ships. Rather disappointing. Jutland: Although I managed to catch the British battlecruisers on their own and at night at close range, their superior speed meant that I could only get a few licks in on them. A short time later, we met again, but this time the Brits had managed to bring in almost all their dreadnoughts at once, from different directions. After a few serious exchanges, my High Seas Fleet beat it for home and safety. The initial meeting (very close, but it was night): SMS Kaiserin takes serious damage after her propulsion is temporarily damaged -- right as Brit destroyers show up and fill her with torpedoes. It's a wonder she did not sink. The rest of my line continues in pursuit of the British battlecruiser squadron.

SETTLERS OF CATAN, ULTRAMARINES, TALISMAN, MANSIONS OF MADNESS, HEROSCAPE
Some that I'd like to play again soon: DIVINE RIGHT, some TSR MINIGAMES (SAGA, REVOLT ON ANTARES, VAMPYRE), AWFUL GREEN THINGS FROM OUTER SPACE, STARSHIP TROOPERS
Some games I miss playing and that I haven't played in a very long time: MIGHTY EMPIRES (by Games Workshop), AXIS & ALLIES, RISK, HEROCLIX, DIPLOMACY

I just played COMMAND & COLORS: ANCIENTS by GMT GAMES. Played other Richard Borg games like BATTLECRY, MEMOIR '44 and BATTLELORE so I thought the game was going to be more of the same.
Wrong!
Enough is added to move the entire game into true wargame territory. Best of the series and will definitely be playing again real soon.

Well, if Settlers counts, then, yes, Settlers of Catan.
A little Kingdom Builder as well.
But I'm looking forward to my summer Risk game on the family vacation.

Ditto here on the Band of Brothers three-game second chance Kickstarter. I have the first editions of the first two volumes, but I wanted the upgrades and the extra scenarios, plus Texas Arrows. Really looking forward to these!

Several packages have also been received per comments on Consimworld Forum. As a second chancer, I know I will be further down the line, but that's okay; plenty of other games to play in the meantime.

Just getting into GMT' s PANZER. It is like ASL for tankers -- tanks take up around 80% of the rules. Played Avalon Hill's MBT and IDF which uses the same basic system.
Fun to relearn...

That sounds cool, I dig tanks and tank combat games. I was a tank crewman (19 kilo) for 5 years on M1A1/A2s, worked as a driver, then a gunner when I became an E5.

Pics from this afternoon, played Lettow-Vorbeck East Africa 1914-18 with a friend at 9lb Hammer in Georgetown (S Seattle). Always been curious about this one, what's it like? Any personal impressions, opinion?

Hi Premmy, lots of fun, any of these Decision Mini games that use cards and dice I have enjoyed, Caesar's War, Belisarius's War and this one Lettow-Vorbeck. Great little games for around $12.
The combo of being card driven but bucket of dice bloody combat can be quite swingy but fun. I think this one was my favorite thus far. It uses what they call the 'hand of destiny' core rules, which is also used in Khyber Rifles, which I just purchased to try because I liked this one so much.

Played games of Ogre and GEV last weekend at one of the local game stores. I won as the defender in Ogre and lost as the attacker in the Raid scenario for GEV. Here's a look at my defensive setup against the Mark III:

Having read novels about Sharpe and Hornblower lately, I have a yen to try Napoleonic-era wargaming. Any suggestions on which rules to use?

Close Action by Clash of Arms would be my suggestion for a boardgame. clashofarms.com/close-act.html boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3553/close-actionAre you interested in larger engagements like Trafalgar etc. or smaller engagements with 1 or a handful of ships per side? Boardgame or miniature?

Thanks for the recommendation. I prefer miniature games, with a bit of roleplaying, but board games may be easier to introduce to my friends. I tend to prefer smaller engagements, since I often play solo. Gaming a major battle would be fun, though.

Conflict of Heroes: Guadalcanal from Academy Games. A long time coming, but a very impressive package upon arrival. After several excursions to the Eastern Front, the COH squad-level system finally invades the PTO with a dozen firefights pitting the Marines against the Japanese in 1942. Most of this is straight infantry vs. infantry stuff, in bad terrain, with a few tanks showing up now and then, plus the Marines sometimes get some air and artillery support. I played the first three firefights, with the Japanese winning the first and the Marines winning the next two.
