Right now if you had this document and selected documents from the Arneson auction that is going on you could come pretty close to really recreating a complete Arnesonian OD&D as it could have been in January 1974. Well there is Champions of ZED.... In reading this, it occurs to me that there are quite a few Arneson documents out there that all tie together in one form or another.... 1. Blackmoor Supplement (TSR) 2. First Fantasy Campaign (Judges Guild) 3. Adventures in Fantasy RPG 3. Dragons at Dawn 4. D@D Supplement I: Twilight 5. Beyond this Point Be Dragons manuscript 6. Radagast the Brown's "Arnesonian Combat" doc 7. Champions of ZED ...and most folks probably don't have a good feel for how they fit together or what they represent. It would be nice to see something that explains what they are and how they fit together. The first three are directly from Dave. The Blackmoor supplement has importance mostly from the Temple of the Frog, FFC is significant because it has early Blackmoor campaign notes, and AiF is key because it shows what a non-Gygax rules system created by Dave might look like. Dan can probably address #4-5 better than I. Dragons at Dawn is a retro tribute to the very first fantasy gaming system pioneered by Dave Arneson, the man who later went on to co-author the worlds most popular roleplaying game. Supplement 1 is a broad ranging expansion of the Dragons at Dawn retro-tribute fantasy role playing game honoring the first years of fantasy adventure role playing as envisioned by gaming pioneer Dave Arneson. Champions of ZED develops the available Open Game License material and brings together the scattered intentions of both authors of the original 1974 edition

Here's a reply I made to a question about the difference between D@D and CoZ: Dragons at Dawn focuses on Dave Arneson and the Minnesota group of gamers. It deliberately tries to build on the quirks and unique things happening there - so there is a Merchant class and a Sage class, in D@D for example - while excluding more familiar game elements. The magic is alchemical, combat involves saving throws to avoid damage and so forth. Champions of ZED on the other hand, has none of that "experimental" stuff. It hews as close as possible to the original game rules as written in 3lbb's, BTPBD, CM, the appropriate sections of the FFC, Supplement II and Gygax and Arneson house rules, etc. Are there points of agreement between the two? Of course, but those using Champions of ZED will generally find themselves in much more familiar territory than those playing Dragons at Dawn."
Radagast document is really interesting. He basically fleshes out AiF combat with Supplement II and FFC info.

All the links are dead and the sites don't come up in the Wayback Machine.

Thanks Marv, that's excellent. I don't know why the omnipotent Google didn't pick that up despite good search terms.

Thanks Marv, that's excellent. I don't know why the omnipotent Google didn't pick that up despite good search terms. No problem. Google has gotten worse in its searching since it no longer allows quotes to group words, etc. I hate it when newer versions of something are dumber than older versions. I also wish I knew what happened to the Search function here at OD&D Discussion. Seems like sometimes it fails to find threads even though I know they are there.

I've started using Google's advanced search so I can specify this site. It's much easier to use than the forum search feature and I don't have to specify a time limit. www.google.com/advanced_search

How are things coming with the print version for Champions of Zed? Andres is working on the last illustration, and as soon as that's finished all will go to Kara for layout. When she is finished, the pdf will go out to all who contributed to the appropriate level on the kickstarter and at that point I'll schedule the print run. I don't actually know how long all that will take.

This is one of (the many) kickstarters I have missed and wish I didn't. Is CoZ going to be available to non-backers?

The estimated delivery date was August 2012. It's 7 months late.

Apart from Joseph Bloch's Adventures Dark & Deep stuff, I have nothing from 20 odd kickstarters that run anywhere near time!

i just wonder why people aren't more critical of this kind of thing. I think beating someone up for being three months late isn't fair, but after that? There has to be some accountability.
I was excited about this project and I'm disappointed in the delay.

i just wonder why people aren't more critical of this kind of thing. Because then your fellow fans will accuse you of “negativity” and of “piling on” the poor publisher/author, who is then fully justified if he wishes to simply “pack the whole thing in”.

For me it because I support KS for me than just getting the loot. I do it cos I want what I am supporting out there. Or I just like it. To me (tho it is a business deal) I treat it as a business deal among friends. As long as it happens, and I am kept up to date on what is happening, I don't get too stressed. I admit Dwimmermout got me peeved but I was very impressed by Tavis. Almost nothing that has a timescale gets done on time, KS is just one of many.

If I do a business deal with friends and they are 7 months late, then I am annoyed with my friends and expect some accountability from them.

Yeah it is certainly a valid view, maybe my view is in the minority. But I try not to get to stressed/worried about these things, life is stressful enough (car crash yesterday!). I also don't pledge money I can't afford to lose.

I don't pledge money I can't afford to lose either. That said, I still expect people to follow through on their promises and commitments anyway.
For me, the stress comes when I feel annoyed and do not express it. I feel less stress when I refuse to allow people to get away with things.

Perhaps he should never have said the game would be shipped in August when the storm hit in October... Come on. How many straws can really be grasped here?
