Ongoing discussions have me wondering. Obviously this will depend on the goings on in the session - is it more roleplaying or what. Let's say its mostly a dungeon crawl session, and let's say its 4-5 hours.

As needed depending on how daring/foolish my players are being. It really varies quite a bit.

I'm voting "never", although it's tricky. I use 5+ on 1d6 to check for various things. It's possible that a high or low ability score may kick in a +/- 1, but it's also possible multiple stats, or no stats, will be involved. So is it a stat check? I'm saying "no", hence my answer of "never". Otherwise, it would probably be at least 4 to 6 times a session, if not more.

I do exactly the same kind of thing, and I wasn't thinking of that as a stat check. What I was thinking of were things like: a. roll less than or less or equal stat on 1d20 b. roll less than or less or equal stat on xd6 c. roll less or equal n times stat on d% (with n=5 being the same as roll less or equal stat on d20 of course).
