I mount back up on the carriage after helping to secure our moneyboxes.
"Thank you for your help, orangeman. Travel you to Arkham?"

The Shade of the Evermore quietly sits by Minion and the orange man. He does not move much, which could be a sign of contemplation... or that he is simply asleep.

"Not that it wasn't anything we couldn't handle, but trouble seems to have a way of following us..." Breath of New Moon adds.

Fated tosses the empty boxes to the group outside:
"It is beneath my station to bear the cargo of others, and my glorious pack slave died saving your lives... gather such coins as you must and carry them as you see fit."
Fated ignores the controls and telegraph equipment and settles in to await the tow to Arkham.

Anything else before resuming the train ride to Arkham?
Will Gunnery be joining the rest of you in your private caboose or going back to coach-class?

The Shade would not object to the archer of unusually good aim joining them in the private car.

"Thank you for your help, orangeman. Travel you to Arkham?" Gunnery performs a brisk little bow from the waist and introduces himself as "The Gunnery Veiled" to those present. "Arkham, yes," he replies... though secretly he wonders what he will find there. A carriage full of worthy fighters can hardly be any duller than the oil tycoon's company, and might even be safer. Besides, Gunnery doesn't want to loose sight of the coin box, and a share in all that silver that he feels he justly deserves. What being almost broke and all. He accepts their offers and rides in their carriage with them, mostly listening any learning.

The Monorail resumes its eastward course to Arkham.
The private carriage, slightly damaged by the worm attack, wobbles down the track with a hypnotic throb. Everybody is bone-tired and falls into a deep sleep, with vivid jungle dreams.
Everybody except Shade that is. He is less than a day old and simply hasn't had time to get tired yet. He stares out the window in quiet contemplation of his life's purpose.

THE DREAM
A magnificent jale pterodactyl (Crussdaddy) soars high above a lush but hostile jungle, basking in the morning sun. Far below, Breath of New Moon and Minion of the Unholy Fragnog stand by a serene freshwater pool, staring in rapt awe at a powerful waterfall crashing down from the cliffs above. They are unaware of the orange emu (WaysOfTheEarth) crashing towards them through the undergrowth, desperately fleeing from an unseen predator...
For Breath and Minion, this is a lucid dream. Fated and Gunnery are of animal intelligence with no knowledge of their waking life.

Minion's green axe faintly oozes with tiny beads of moisture. It seems strangely lifelike in this alien environment...

Well, taking into account the majestic nature of the surroundings, and the fact that he knows it's a dream, Minion will 'put the moves on' Breath of New Moon. If his advances seem unwelcome, he dives into the pool for a swim.

In the dream the waysoftheearth emu shakes out its flightless wings as it runs and transforms into a peerless wedge-tailed eagle, takes flight and wheels about to see who this "fearsome predator" really is...

In the dream the waysoftheearth emu shakes out its flightless wings as it runs and transforms into a peerless wedge-tailed eagle, takes flight and wheels about to see who this "fearsome predator" really is... The emu sees a patch of daylight ahead and leaps with all his might... Roll under Wis on d20 check = 2! A gunnery eagle bullets into the open air! He is now a fully-functional wedge-tailed eagle except for the following anomalies: [orange]orange fungoid growths[/orange] in place of feathers and bulbous, unblinking eyes! The jungle floor drops away in an unexpected cascade of water, and the fledgling eagle must pump his wings or be swept into the waterfall and dashed on the rocks below! He spirals around to confront his pursuer: a jaguar lizard with a taste for bird-flesh! In moments it will reach the precipice and realize the futility of its chase...

Breath of New Moon rebuffs Minion's advances in no uncertain terms. She returns to her contemplation of the waterfall, and decides to walk closer to it. She glances up at the bird circling above.

Breath looks up to see an orange eagle come shooting out from above the waterfall, followed by a gigantic lizard doing its best Wile E. Coyote impression, pedaling its legs to keep from plummeting...
Breath and Minion must attempt a saving throw vs. falling lizard (wands, actually): 15, 13... success!
The jaguar lizard spreads its frill and begins wafting gently to earth...
Meanwhile Minion dives down and finds something interesting indeed: the mutilated corpse of Shadow of the Evermore! But that's not all he finds in the murky waters...
Meanwhile the ulfire and orange birds circle overhead...
Surprise check: Breath 1, Ptera the Dactyl 1, Gunnery Eagle 4, Minion 6, Lizard 3, Lurker 4
Minion feels a disturbance in the water and senses he is not alone!
But Breath does not notice the bubbles, she is completely focused on dodging the lizard, which will consume her entire surprise round action.
Minion and Gunnery, what are your intentions for the surprise round?
Fated, you haven't spotted the disturbance below yet. What are you doing way up there on this fine morning?

Meanwhile aboard the monorail, the miles pass by uneventfully on this clear, quiet night. The train leaves the hilltowns behind and enters a loamy valley of farm plots and ramshackle homesteads. The rail crosses a wide, sluggish river via an iron trestle bridge that impresses Shade with its angular efficiency. He notices his traveling companions have all fallen asleep and are missing the fine scenery.
Barring further delays, the monorail should arrive in Arkham in the early morning hours. Shade looks around at the mountain of gear the party has accumulated over the past few days: in addition to personal effects (including full plate armor, high-tech polearms, etc.!) there are boxes overflowing with heavy coins and, dwarfing all else, the reeking corpse of MOR the toad-thing!! Shade has never been to a "city" before and has no concept of urban life. It feels natural and good to acquire shiny objects, but the particulars of economics and trade are foreign to him.

*Mmmmm... shiny objects and trinkets.* Oh, Shade is no dummy (Int 15). He instinctively understands the molecular structures of copper and silver, and how the crystalline nature of topaz refracts light, for example. But he simply hasn't yet experienced the economic exchange of goods and services: this many coins buys a loaf of bread, that many coins buys a suit of armor, and so forth. In his mind copper and silver are equally desirable due to their unique properties, and he is satisfied by the acquisition of the metals rather than the promise of what they can buy.

SURPRISE ROUND
Wedge-tail eagles are fearsome lizard-shredding machines indeed, however Gunnery rolls 1 in a rare lapse of hunting ability.
Minion surfaces with a gasp for air, closely pursued by "a yellow, ulfire, gray, and orange-scaled crustacean with five eyes and four mouths"!!!
The frilly jaguar lizard glides toward the clearing vacated by the diving-for-cover Breath of New Moon.
The Ulfire Flyer becomes peripherally aware of the insignificant events below and may intervene if it tickles his fancy.
Surprise Round is concluded; your intentions for Round 1?
