The Shadow looks at the bloody hand prints on the stones.
"This is fresh blood. What else has recently retreated back down this tunnel with a bloody body?"
He steps into the opening and readies his flail and shield.

With the Sword of Omens drawn, THE EYE OF THUNDERA follows the trail of blood and looks for additional hand prints on the walls/floor/ceiling (depending on the height of the ceiling).

(party=6, unknown=3; neither side is surprised)
As you shine your lights down the side-tunnel, there is a metallic clanging noise! Brown plant-like tendrils are rising from the drain pipe below and rattling the metal grate.
Initiative is rolled: party 2, mystery creature 5.
A dozen thick brown vines wrap around the iron bars and hurl the grate aside with an echoing clang! A monstrous plant-creature pulls itself up from the chute and casts about blindly. Moments later, a thick, brown, bark-covered "trunk" rises from the deep. Its mouthless "face" consists of five radially-situated, bloodshot eyes. The eyes blink at you as it spreads its vines, completely blocking the passage!
YOUR TURN

Hit Points for the Battle of the Brown Plant(s)
Sovereign Mask of All Who See: 4, 6 = 7 The Shadow of the Evermore: 6, 3 = 4 Servitor of The Yellow Sign: 10, 5 = 6 Fated to Die: 1, 4 = 5 The Eye of Thundera (1+1 HD +1 due to Con): 1, 2 = 4 Thaimos the Seeker: 9, 1 = 2 Mirthful Doomed: 6, 8 = 9

The Shadow of the Evermore begins by hurling his spear at the monstrosity before closing in with his flail.

If there's room in the tunnel, Servitor of the Yellow Sign advances to attack with his tulwar! "Anyone with fire, burn it!"

The passage is quite narrow. Shadow can certainly hurl his spear (and missile fire is resolved before melee in Chainmail), but anyone wishing to charge into melee must advance single file...
Certainly Servitor would not feel safe with flaming oil thrown at his back!

The Sovereign Mask of All Who See--confident in his abilities this time around--marches, flail in hand, toward the monstrous vines, ready to do battle.

"In my name, kill this beast!"

Shadow hurls his spear (d6 = 2) but it flies wide of its mark!
Thug Slave (2d6=4) wants no part of this 5-eyed, leafy monstrosity and cowers in fear behind his Master!
Several of you wish to close for melee combat, but the passage is only wide enough for one at a time. Which of you unfortunates will lead the attack?

THE EYE OF THUNDERA will stay back for the moment and light a torch.
"Hold off the beast while I light a torch. Hopefully it fears the fire."

Fated to Die and Thug Slave back away from the entrance, making room for others to surround the beast if it emerges into the rail tunnel. Fated makes sure to keep a clear line of escape back down the way they came.

"It had better fear fire" the Mirthful Doomed replies "if it knows what's good for it.'
Is the liquor in The Mirthful Doomed's flask flammable?
If so, the Mirthful Doomed will take a big swig and position himself behind The Eye of Thundara.

Eye of Thundera lights a torch while Mirthful Doomed quaffs deeply and readies a flask of precious, flammable liquor for throwing. He lights the flask from the torch and hurls it at the beast (d6 = 6!). The plant-thing is engulfed by flames for (d10=10,d12=3, double damage from fire) 6 damage and writhes soundlessly.
With what you assume is rage, the thing flops toward you--still burning!--directly into melee range of Servitor, Sovereign Mask, and Thaimos (roll 3, 1, 3 respectively) who flail and stab away but cannot seem to strike the vitals on the plant-creatures unusual anatomy.
Initiative is rolled for Round 2: Party 2, Plant-Thing 4
The bark-covered monstrosity targets Sovereign Mask and Mirthful Doomed with separate attacks (1, 4) but temporarily blinded by smoke from its own body cannot harm you.
The flames inflict an additional (d12=2) 4 damage on the Thing before they sputter and die out.
YOUR TURN!

Servitor cautiously backs away for a moment to give room for another flaming drink, then attacks again, slashing broadly to disrupt its structure.

Fated to Die diligently watches the rear, and directs Thug Slave to feel around the cave floor beneath the water just in case there are any goodies laying about from previous plant-monster victims.

Thaimos sees the plant thing burning, flopping towards him. He takes a step back and hollers "Why won't you die?" at the thing, and brings his flail around for another swing.

The Mirthful Doomed pulls a bottle out from his sack.
"Twenty year old moon wine" he mutters "What a tragic waste."
He feels a part of himself die as he fashions the bottle into a molotov cocktail.
As he hurls the flaming bottle at the creature, he shouts "That was a great year you monster!"

Somewhere in the darkness Breath of New Moon is awakened by the muffled sounds of combat...
MEANWHILE
Thug Slave begins crawling through the muck feeling for treasure...
MEANWHILE
The Mirthful Doomed pops the cork on a 20-year old bottle of moon wine...
MEANWHILE
Sovereign Mask attacks fearlessly and with great fury! ... but his flail swings wide (4). Thaimos (1) has no better luck.
Eye of Thundera smartly attacks with his torch but (4) the writing plant-thing is surprisingly hard to hit!
Servitor sees an opening and decides to take it but (1) he is distracted by the thought of a flaming liquor bath and misses. The creature however flops directly into Shadow's reach so he shrugs and takes a swing of his own (2) that glances off the beast unharmed.
"Bombs away!" shouts Mirthful Doomed and, with the precision of a Spartan phalanx, everybody dives back just as the molotov cocktail (2) arcs too high and shatters against the wall!
(sorry guys, the d6 is not your friend today)
Initiative for Round 3 is rolled: Party 4, Plant-thing 1
(finally you catch a break!)
YOUR TURN!
