Gozer: "Anybody have any ideas what that weird object does? Probably we should avoid pushing the button for now.
Let's stop here for a moment and have a vote from everyone. what should we do next? I like the idea of exploring further to the east. After that, I would love to come up with some ambush ideas for those beasts behind the doors - the netzooka could probably help with that. What does everyone else want to do?"

Gimyip asks Bothess, "Now that we have recovered the Lotus, what do you need to do with it?"
Gimyip is for avoiding any unnecessary hostilities, and proceeding toward the next objective on the mission as swiftly as possible. The best loot will likely be found at the finale, he muses.

Bothess replies, "The Lotus must be taken to the site of the battle with Darsiaas' forces, a hill called Prigruin's Tor. There, a short ritual must be performed to free Obregon's Soul. It will take several days to get there from Jaftgong."

Berist: stay
E'ssej Iu: ? Gimyip: leave
Gozer: stay
Yashub-Yahad: leave
The NPCs will, of course, follow your lead. With 4 of 5 votes in, the decision is evenly divided between staying and exploring and leaving for Prigruin's Tor.

From the map, we've obviously gone slightly up or down. Do we have any idea which?

Neither. The passageway runs beneath the sloping stairs into the monastery. This is the reason the ceiling in this corridor is only about 7' as opposed to the 10' height of (most of) the rest of the level. (is that what you meant?)

[yes, thanks]
Yashub-Yahad suggests that, if we decide to leave, we could use a laser or explosives to create a hole in the roof, allowing us to exit the area directly rather than having to retrace our steps.

Bothess takes a look at the ceiling and the surrounding stone walls. "That is doable," she says in response to Yashub-Yahad's suggestion.
"You're quite the clever fellow, aren't you?" chimes in Mickeck. He can't quite keep the admiring tone from his voice.
((I'll wait one more day for abecross/Essej, then lacking his deciding vote, I will use a die roll to resolve the tie))

Okay, the vote remains a tie with one abstaining, so the ref gets to roll a d6. Odd = stay, even = leave ... yielding a result of "1". For now, you will stay and explore the ruins. This decision may, of course, be altered at your whim.
Bothess and Mickek take point as the remaining mercs move to the rear of the party, and you form up in preparation to head east. Apparently, short of making your own exit per Yashub-Yahad's suggestion, retracing your steps is the only way out.

As you exit through the wall-that-is-not, you are greeted by eight robed figures, two of which are carrying torches. All are armed with various energy weapons. Their robes are covering in strange symbols which you intuit are an ancient language of some sort. One figure's robes are particularly ornate, he steps forward.
"Greetings, fellow searchers!" he calls out. "I am Kingurad. Like you, we also probe the unknown. I pray thee, for the sake of knowledge of this strange place, what has revealed itself to you behind this mysterious wall?" His barely notable accent is strange, but his annunciation and grammar are impeccable, as is his courteous manner. You note his emaciated face, wrinkled skin of faded black; you realize he is a mummy, as are his seven companions.

Gozer: "Yes, so many fires in there that the barrel of my weapon was scorched."
[Gozer points his rifle at the mummies so they can see right up the barrel]

Gimyip backs off cautiously. It is not everyday that he is confronted by the walking dead...
[OOC: Do they carry a light, or were they moving in pitch darkness?]

Kingurad does not react to Gozer raising his weapon, but his companions snap their weapons up with a casual precision, not exactly aiming them at the party.
As for Kingurad, he raises an eyebrow and tut-tuts. "Now, gentlemen ... and lady," he acknowledges Bothess with a nod of his head. "There is no need for that. Hand it over and we'll be on our way. I'll even give you 500 gold pieces for your trouble."
((two are carrying torches, but you notice they hold them awkwardly, as if afraid))

"500 gold is a durn sight more than we've seen 'til now," Berist says. "Pleased to hand it over, get paid, and be done with it."
Berist goes and fetches the shoe-sized object from wherever we've packed it. As he does so, he takes his remaining incendiary grenade off his belt, turning his body and using the pack to shield what he's doing from Kingurad and his companions.
"Lots of folks looking for it, first them lobster-claw things an' now you. What's it do, anyway?" he asks as he holds up the strange device.

"Do not mistake my pleasant demeanor for idiocy," Kingurad replies. "I am not a lackwit. That is a motion detector, a toy; one in which I have no interest. I will ask you again, politely, to please hand over the 'Lotus."
The please comes out a bit forced, but so far Kingurad's demeanor seems unchanged.

"Mmm, you is smarter than those lobster-things," Berist says.
[OOC: Could we get a tactical-scale map of the location of our party - particularly where the Lotus is - and of Kingurad and his companions? I think we'll all be fine with your assumptions about where we'd be standing, who'd be holding the Lotus, etc.]

Oops! One too many mummies! Subtract the one standing in front of the diagonal wall.

Gimyip has always had a hard time trusting dead guys who wouldn't lie still. He grimly acknowledges where all this is heading and makes a decision.
"Back up people!" he advises the party firmly, as he pulls a grenade off his belt and lobs it so that falls beyond the mummies in the east corridor -- judging his throw so that the blast will catch Kinguard, but not the retreating party.
Before it hits the floor he is already backing toward the illusionary wall, and readying to pull another one next round.

Berist's thinking has been moving in parallel with Gimyip's. He throws the incendiary grenade he palmed earlier down the north corridor, hoping to clear the line of retreat. He'll then draw sword and pistol and charge northward once both blasts go off.

As soon as Gimyip makes the decision to lob the grenade, Kingurad barks an order to the his crew, who bring their weapons fully to bear. The mummy leader raises his hand toward Gimyip, who screams and clamps his hands over his ears. Blood runs from his eyes, nose, and mouth and he drops to his knees as Buiq points his arm in the same gesture at Kingurad. Now it is the mummy's turn to scream, but he turns to face Buiq and the two become locked in some unseen struggle. Transfixed, nobody engages in battle as the bizarre conflict plays out before your eyes. The screams of both combatants fills the air, dust flies from the mummy's robes and Buiq's transparent skin become an angry, bloody red. Unfortunately, Buiq has expended much of his psionic strength battling the Trogs and, with an odd keening sound, collapses to the ground and he does not get up. Smoke pours from his ears, mouth, and hands. Kingurad staggers for a momemnt, then fixes his gaze back on Gimyip ... ... weakly, he raises his hand ... ... and before he can attack Gimyip with his mind Gozer blows his head off. Pandemonium reigns! Grenades arc through the air, the buzzing and zapping noises mix with the shouts of anger, energy bolts fly back and forth. Yelling she needs to protect the Lotus, Bothess dives behind the illusionary wall, grunting as she takes a laser shot to her right shoulder. Gimyip lobs his grenade toward the east group of mummies and follows Bothess through the wall, a laser blast passing over him as he dives for the ground and pulls a second grenade. Berist hurls a grenade of his own and then steps to the northwest to cover from the blast, drawing his sword and pistol as he does so; unfortunately he is still in the line of sight of the east group and he takes a laser shot to the chest. Gozer sees a motion to his right and turns to see a mummy firing a pistol at him, hitting him on the right leg. Mickek puts his hand on Berist's shoulder, telling him he's got his back, and he also prepares for a charge to the north. Sgt Kelz runs to Buiq, standing over him with melee weapons drawn, to protect his fallen comrade. ((unless I hear otherwise)) Yashub-Yahad prepares to melee with the east group of mummies. The grenades explode almost simultaneously, with a deafening roar! The combined blast throws everyone to the ground and raises a cloud of choking, blinding dust. You look around and see most of your comrades rising, and through the dust cloud a enemy mummy approaches! Summary: - Buiq is down and looks dead.
- Kingurad, unless mummies can function without a head, also looks quite dead.
- Berist lost two dice in the attack.
- Gozer lost one die.
- Gimyip lost three dice in the psionic assault.
- Sgt. Kelz did not get up after the blast.
- At least one mummy is approaching from the east, and the mummy that shot Gozer is struggling to its feet, too.

His ears ringing, vision blurred and his brain afire with the mother of all head-aches, Gimyip somehow still brings his rifle up and fires a shot at the incoming mummy.
